Nestled into the bank of the Mwagusi River, this small exclusive tented camp overlooks the beautiful riverbed and all its’ natural visitors. Our camp is built along the lines of a traditional old-style African safari experience. Each tent is designed within a thatched banda with polished clay-red floors. Luxury has not been forgotten with an en-suite bathing area and a shaded veranda with lounging cushions and swinging hammock. Enjoy excellent game-viewing with our knowledgeable guides, on a game drive or a safari walk.

Mwagusi Camp is ‘quirky’ but amazing. It’s style is relaxed but you have everything you need for a great stay. The guiding and driving are second to none. Everything we told our guide that we wanted to see was found - even a pack of 36 wild dogs. The tents all overlook the river which was dry but was put to good use as a place to eat dinner under the stars. The staff were all friendly and provided a first class service.

The location of Mwugasi camp is simply stunning. The Bandas were extremely comfortable but still retained a rustic feel in some aspects. The game viewing was excellent, we felt extremely lucky in what we were privileged to see. Our guide Geography was the most knowledgable guide we’ve come across and his ability to communicate that knowledge was second to none. We were also lucky to be paired with the perfect couple to travel with - Thankyou Sandra and John for your company. The food was spectacular and Chris Fox provided an enlightening insight into the camps inception and the true Tanzania. Sometimes the history and present activities within the country may not be to all tastes but the true value and kindness of Tanzania can be found at this camp.

My husband and I spent four nights at this camp during September 2022. The camp is charming, comfortable and quiet. Our guide all four days was Baldon Mdegela who is one of the best guides we have ever had. Baldon loves his job and sharing what he knows about the animals, plants, insects, astronomy and history of Ruaha and Tanzania. He is able to spot animals with an uncanny ability and to chose ares to explore that are active and interesting. The camp is a visual delight and the camp staff are kind and totally professional. Every dinner was spent in a different location, under the stars and the food was delicious. I recommend this camp highly.

Every aspect of Mwagusi was wonderful. Our guide, Joffrey, has keen eyes and is a wealth of knowledge. Game drives were the best, we saw lions and leopard almost each time. The bandas are large, very comfortable, and provide a lovely verandah to relax while looking out on the riverbed. Staff here go above and beyond to make guests feel welcome. Food is delicious, you will not go hungry!

There are no words. This is the second time I have stayed at Mwagusi and I feel like they are my family. And, they will make you feel that as well. For someone who has gone on game drive for over 30 years, I rarely like to return to the same place twice. This is the exception. It is due to the guides, all of them including Dumi, Boldon, Vale, and everyone else on the staff. I didn’t think I could learn new things, but, I do, and this is the perfect school to attend. There are wonderful stories, myths, and learnings to absorb. And, the Fox family are true Tanzanians, born and bred. For me, that counts a lot when deciding where to go. The landscape is varied and a wonderful microcosm to be explored. Laughter and cooperation, along with healthy competition to spot rare birds and animals is wonderful incentive. Learn about the stars at night. Have a wonderful healthy fresh meal, followed by a private Banda where the bed is comfortable, the constant hot water and modern toilet are the touches that make it like a true bush home. It’s about the animals, comfort of the camp, the amazing helpful and nice staff, great fresh food in the middle of the bush, and, most importantly, seeing fantastic flora and fauna around every corner. If you researching places in Ruaha, this is the place to be.

We recently spent 3 nights at Mwagusi Camp as part of a month long East African adventure. The game drives here were the best we experienced during our entire trip. No-one else offered a driver plus guide and due to their excellent staff development programme we also had a trainee guide on board. More pairs of eyes to give you the best chance of spotting the more elusive wildlife. Our senior guide was Geoffrey, his years of experience and the knowledge he shared was incredible. We had been disappointed up until our arrival at Mwagusi by the number of big cat sightings. This was resolved on day 1! The camp is beautiful, bandas are spacious with verandas overlooking the river where wildlife comes to drink. During our stay we were hosted by the owner Chris, his family and the camp manager. We all ate lunch and dinner together, the latter being set out on the dry riverbed with fire and lanterns, a magical experience. Chris has had a very interesting life with great stories to tell. The food in camp, and for bush breakfasts, was excellent. I don’t eat meat and received a special dish each meal time. All the staff were very welcoming and could not have done more for us, even refolding our hastily unpacked clothes! We will be back!

This camp is absolutely stunning, the location of the bandas overlooking the river bed is so tranquil & the banda itself was spacious, luxurious and very comfortable. I really enjoyed the sitting area outside where we had an uninterrupted view of the dry river bed. We had the most beautiful dinner set out in the middle of the dry river bed with lanterns in the rocks and a roaring fire off to the one side. Even though it was very hot in November having the fire going & the lanterns lit gave our dining experience a really great atmosphere. The food was excellent and the staff were very friendly. We had a really good game drive the one morning with a guide from the lodge (I apologise I cannot recall his name) he was so knowledgeable and keen to tell us all about the area and animals etc, we self drove to the lodge so it was really nice to be told about the area & animals from a local. If you have a chance to go to Mwagusi you must.

Thank you Philippa for your very complimentary review of Mwagusi, we really appreciate your comments which I will be passing on to the Mwagusi team. We have had some great viewings of game in the dry Mwagusi river bed this season so I am glad this was a part of your experience with us. Our guides are involved in delivering the training program to new local students at Mwagusi too. We hope that one day you will come back to see us, we will be looking forward to greeting you. Best wishes, the Mwagusi Team.

I have written a number of reviews of this camp and it is difficult to say something new, but whoever reads this may like to know why I think it is so special. Firstly, it is superbly situated by the side of what is usually (except it seems, when I come to visit) a dry river bed and in an area visited by a lot of animals. This year a leopard walked down the path past my banda merely minutes before I was escorted to dinner and in previous years I have seen lions, elephants and wild dogs in camp. Secondly, the bandas are spacious, quirky and extremely comfortable - there is nothing quite so enjoyable as sitting staring at the landscape, all thoughts of European civilisation banished. Thirdly, the food and service are terrific - how do they manage to rustle up such delicious meals miles from anywhere? Most importantly, this is a camp which the owners, managers and staff are passionate about and it shows. The guides and drivers are just brilliant (I have been all over Tanzania and consider myself very well placed to judge) thanks to a very enlightened training program - they have eyes like hawks and a fund of knowledge which is really enlightening and adds to the whole experience. I will return, and that is a promise...
