LUX* Grand Baie, a modernist marvel seemingly dropped onto a crescent of sand on the northern shores of Mauritius, turns heads. This new generation boutique-style resort introduces travelers to the seductive, slow pace of island living. But not too slow… LUX* Grand Baie, mirroring the adjacent beach town from which it takes its name, is exciting and playful. Whether it’s the unparalleled culinary scene or the breath-taking rooftop experience, there is truly no other celebratory place to be. A real invitation to seize the moment.

We recently stayed at the Lux Grand Baie for 10 nights and stayed in a Junior suite. We were moved from the Lux Belle Mare due to the fire and were concerned as the hotel layout was very different: Modern in deisgn and rooms were smaller. We had no reason for our concern. This flagship hotel for the Lux Group is fantastic in almost every way. Positives Staff All of the staff are wonderfully happy, can't do enough for you and make your stay very special. For the hotel management i have named a number of the staff specifically at the bottom of the review. Room We were concerned when moved from Belle Mare about the smaller room. We had nothing to worry about. The Junior suites are very spacious and wonderfully laid out. The view from our room (1217) was amazing and very special sunsets every evening. Housekeeping was exemplary and again such friendly members of the team. "Happy to help" Food & Drink From sunrise to sunset the food is spectacular and truly 5*. All drinks are branded and there is very little that you need to pay for. Only advice is be careful as different restaurants have different drinks in the all inclusive. After our discussion with the management this may have been rectified. Leisure facilities We used the Gym and the watersports and all very high quality equipment and an experience from the moment you arrive and are handed a towel to when you leave and are given a flavoured drink and ice cold flannel. There to help if needed but not intrusive. Beach activities again brilliant, including paddle boarding, Kyaking, sailing, water skiing and a glass bottom boat, where we snorkelled from out on the reef. The spa is well resourced and set out and the staff helpful. We didn't have a treatment but heard they were very good. This was a very special holiday for us - postponed twice due to the pandemic and it lived up to and beyond our expectations. We did a tour to the south of the island which was interesting and fun. Manoj our driver was knowledgable about the history and the geography of the island. As i mentioned early the staff are amaing and special mentions for Manley a passionate and commited Head barman with wonderful skills in making cocktails in the Ai Kisu bar and restaurant and the night club next door. Kevin in the Bisou rooftop bar. A real joker and again loves his job. Gasaan in the Rooftop Bisou restaurant looked after us througout our holiday making sure we always had the best possible table in the restaurant and made sure our every request was covered. Nitin in the Beach Rouge bar. Always a big smile and happy welcome. Manoj the hotel Car Driver. Gym and Beach activities staff. I dont have names but wonderful all of them. Finally and not least Sheila the hotel manager is accessible, understanding, friendly and wants the hotel to be as good as it can be and is absolutely customer focussed! Thank you all for a wonderful stay.

Everything was absolutely perfect from day 1 ! The hotel is gorgeous, the villa is beautiful, food is amazing and offers many options for everyone. But more importantly, the service has been 10/10. Rao did a fantastic job taking care of our family. He helped us to get a doctor at the villa one evening where our 2 month old baby was sick. Every single request was attended in no time and the staff at the hotel made our stay an extremely enjoyable one! We also really enjoyed the healthy options for our 2 year old at every breakfast, lunch and dinner ! We are very sad to leave today but we will certainly be back and recommend your hotel to everyone going to Mauritius.

For our latest trip to Mauritius we travelled as a family group including 4 twenty somethings. Due to this, we decided upon the new, modern Lux Grand Baie as felt this may cater better for them than some of the more established Mauritian hotels. We stayed in their 3 bed beach pool villa on a half board basis and our initial impressions of both the hotel and villa were very positive. Both the resort and our accommodation were well laid out and appointed with clean sleek lines, an impressive lobby and eye catching gardens, restaurants, bars and pools. After a couple of days however it became apparent that much of this was style over substance and the shortcomings of the hotel became apparent. The service in the restaurants, particularly Beach Rouge and Bisou, wasn’t close to the levels we have come to expect in Mauritius and the beach club concept became tiresome with loud music playing from 8 am until midnight which, on the beach and even in our villa, became an incessant irritating baseline thud. A summary of our experience is as follows: Pro’s 1) The hotel looks great and generally has been well thought out and our villa was spacious with luxurious fittings and amenities and high quality accessories such as towels, toiletries, etc. The villa also benefits from a sizeable and a very well heated pool overlooking its own section of beach. Not sure how well some of the decor and fittings will age however as our villa needed several repairs in the time we were there. 2) Beach is a lovely safe, sweeping bay and the northern part just past the hotel was particularly nice. 3) Watersports were excellent with Faisal and the team on point with their service. We used the whole array of available activities including free water skiing, wakeboarding and snorkelling trips. We also booked an early morning private speedboat cruise to swim with dolphins and had the joy of a group of about 50 Spinner dolphins to ourselves for almost an hour before any other boats arrived. A memorable experience. 4) The menus at the restaurants all offered a good choice of dishes (Bisou probably the weakest) and generally food was of good quality with Ai Kisu being excellent. Portion sizes were very big but prices would be expensive if not on half board. Breakfast at Beach Rouge was excellent with a la Carte ordering for the main part and also a comprehensive buffet. 5) Last but not least our personal villa concierge, Kishan, the undoubted star of our stay. He looked after all our needs, booking restaurants and trips, organising the villa, serving us sundowners and canapés and trying to smooth over our various issues. His service mentality was outstanding and the hotel really need to nurture and learn from him to address the undoubted service issues they have. Edi, the villa manager, however was conspicuous by his absence during our whole stay, even after the drone incident below, leaving Kishan to field our complaints. Con’s 1) The hotel is located on a busy, noisy road which, whilst not directly impacting our villa, would impact other rooms and villas plus the kids club and spa. In addition this road has no obvious pedestrian walkway and so going into Grand Baie by foot is not really a safe option. 2) Food and in particular drink prices are eye-wateringly expensive. Cocktails at around £20 and, most gouging, a pint of local beer at £15..! For info, we stayed at JW Marriott after the Lux and drinks were considerably cheaper with a pint of the same beer less than half the price. Would flag up however that water was free with all meals which isn’t common practice at many hotels. 3) Privacy wasn’t great at the villa or it’s ‘private’ area of beach. Numerous people came up to take pictures of the villa whilst we were there, which given it is all glass fronted wasn’t great. In addition, other guests were continually walking into our beach area and separate beach house whilst we were trying to relax. Finally, the hotel photographer had chosen our area as the location for his romantic photoshoots which resulted in us awkwardly gawping at posing couples a few feet away whilst laying on our sunbeds..! Better signage or planting around the villa may improve the situation. 4) Service at Beach Rouge and Bisou restaurants was way off the mark. Beach Rouge had plenty of staff but their service seemed unorganised, disconnected and at times chaotic. Bisou on the other hand just didn’t have enough staff (Krishna admirably tried to keep the show on the road but was fighting a losing battle). We had numerous examples of issues, too many to mention, but including empty plates not being cleared, cold food, half frozen kebab at Bisou, fish cake rather than hash brown served with a breakfast fry up and the signature whole fish being completely forgotten on seafood night. In the end, it became a running joke for us when we went to those restaurants… These service issues were particularly exacerbated at weekends when the hotel accepted large groups of non residents in to use the hotel facilities. The Sunday BBQ was particularly bad when we were there with non-resident kids running around unsupervised and culminating in a clothed staff member having to jump in the adult pool to rescue one. This is obviously a good revenue generator for the hotel but really compromises the room paying guests experience which surely must be the priority for any hotel. 5) Noise, Noise, Noise… The seeming hotel concept of being an Insta friendly, Nikki Beach wannabe resulted in loud music at Beach Rouge morning, noon and night. It was very loud but maybe just about acceptable around the pool when you could actually hear the tune, but elsewhere, in particular the villa areas, it was just an incessant dull base thumping. Relaxation on the beach or in the villa was difficult, and would wake up at 8 am to it and go to bed at past 11 pm with it still going on. I appreciate the hotel is trying a younger, trendier vibe but this level of noise does nothing for the guest experience whatever age. After several complaints the hotel did seem to get the message and it was toned down and the hours reduced for our last few days. We also had a drone incident at gone midnight, with the hotel marketing staff using this in very close proximity to our villa, so close we could clearly hear the buzzing whilst trying to sleep. They were apparently making a video of one of the pool villas and ‘didn’t realise the time’ at nearly 12.30 am..! Overall, despite the various gripes above, we did enjoy our holiday and would rate the experience as Good. The hotel has many excellent features and is maybe experiencing growing pains in its 1st year. We would return but only if they sort out the service and noise issues. The Beach Rouge staff need to be more engaged and organised and Bisou fully manned, the hotel needs to reduce the non-resident weekend influx and the beach club noise needs to be toned down. Unplug the speakers, pls…!

The hotel has much to commend it but it is not quite at the 5 star level yet. Many of the staff seem inexperienced and slow, missing items from order regularly, the systems do not quite work as well as they should. Room service is for no good reason not taken into account in a half board rate - not even any allowance even though the menu is the same as the restaurant. Yet that is not explained and I have heard several guests mention they have been caught out. Loud music often blares at all times of the day. the food particularly in the South Asian restaurant is occasionally disappointing even poor but very highly priced. Indeed the prices (off inclusive tariff) are exorbitant. The rooms are a little soulless and lack any local touches. These are perhaps minor niggles. The overall standard is good by Mauritian standards but nothing is outstanding. Not really yet international 5 star.

'Thank You' could not capture the experience LUX* provided. I visited LUX* in Grand Baie Mauritius for my fiftieth birthday, and I have to say that this is probably up there with one of the best decisions of my life. It's probably the first time ever that I would note that the pictures on the Website didn't do the hotel justice. The Hotel website also doesn't capture the fact that the staff/service was fabulous. Prior to my arrival I was asked to download the Hotel APP that outlined activities and restaurants that you could book. Most water sports were free ... I was also sent a questionnaire asking what pillows I liked, what floor I'd like to be placed on, whether I had allergies, what type of mattress I liked etc. I had a junior suite to myself, which looked out to the Indian Ocean. I could not fault the room facilities, the lights/windows were controlled by a button; I had a shower/bath/two sinks and a toilet that washed your privates. Wardrobe space was extensive as was the fact that when I asked for an iron, the staff ironed my clothes for me. The hotel had a turn down service mid evening, whereby slippers were placed at the side of your bed and the sheets were turned down. The room also had gorgeous shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and hand wash that looked like they were from a posh spa. I choose half board and could not have had all inclusive. The breakfast was extensive and filled you until dinner. I have NEVER stayed in a hotel with such high-quality food included in Half Board. The variety was extensive, and I struggled to choose where to eat. The hotel had a roof top gym and an internal gym, which looked nice, but I did spend most of my time on the beach. Staff visited the beach and offered drinks/food continuously but not in a way that was disruptive. The location/environment was beautiful; the grounds were green, the ocean blue. The interior/architecture of the hotel just added to the joy of being in this hotel. Clean lines and stylish furniture and fittings. I celebrated my fiftieth birthday whilst there and despite being a solo traveller it was probably up there with my top three birthdays. The staff fussed over me, gave me gifts, cocktails and birthday cake. I now know that they spoke with a friend in London and arranged flowers for my room. They organised a cocktail making session and ensured always that I was okay, I just cannot thank the staff enough for the experience I had. I met numerous vacationers that had stayed in LUX* hotels on more than one occasion and confirmed that this was not a one of experience it was consistent. I would go back in a heartbeat. I have to give a shout out to Daniel the hotel manager, Adarsh for my cocktail evening, Sheila for offering to provide me with pack lunch for an external trip, Iqbal for always remembering my name and making sure that I was okay, Jerome and Gopee, Sanjay, Sophie who shared the same birthday as me, Roobish, Rishi (Beach), Mulia, Diksha (AiKusu), Dashi, Rumi (Breakfast) and Praveen (reception), Crispine helping me to climb on a swing in the middle of the infinity pool and the holiday would not have been the same without Jennifer, who greeted me on my arrival and was a guardian angel throughout my stay. I have recommended this hotel to everyone that will listen. It was just fabulous. Thank you thank you thank you ;o)
