This place is amazing, and the host is amazing. The property is a grand home built in the 1790s with additions in the 1860s. Despite its age, every surface in this place gleams. I didn't see a speck of dust as is sometimes the case in old charming B&Bs full of antiques. The rooms are spacious, and there are also great sitting areas for socializing. The bathrooms are also spacious, many with claw-foot tubs to relax in. John has decorated each room carefully, with an eclectic yet cleverly curated mix of artworks, interesting objects, and books. Music from the 40s wafted through the house adding to the ambiance. John was so warm and welcoming we felt like we were visiting a friend, one who has perfected the art of breakfast. We might never have another reason to visit Troy, but if we ever did, this is surely where we would look forward to staying.

We stayed at The Gardner Farm Inn this past weekend, and it was a real treat. Situated between the Poesten Kill river and the RPI campus, the inn is conveniently located near local attractions in the Capitol District. The house itself is very special, with its lengthy history showing in every detail. (if you like historic architecture, this is the place for you!) We stayed in the John Waters room (each room is named after a cultural icon) and it was roomy, comfortable, and full of interesting art and artifacts) John, the owner and host could not be more gracious and welcoming. He is a natural host, with a gift for putting strangers at ease. He is also quite a cook, as breakfast was an excellent blueberry french toast, crisp bacon, and critically for me, good coffee. We enjoyed our stay, and our only regret was that we only had one night to spend in this excellent B&B.

I cannot heap enough glowing praise on John Hughes and his Gardner Farm Inn in Troy, NY. I recently returned to Troy for a reunion at RPI and was bowled over by the gracious and genuine hospitality which I experienced here. This beautifully restored old house is whimsically appointed with eclectic artifacts and photos throughout the entire house. I stayed in the Jean Harlow Suite which was very clean, welcoming, comfortable, and quiet. I slept so well!! But what struck me more about the Gardner Farm Inn, other than the wonderful physical attributes of this B&B, was how I felt so welcome and “at home” here. This was my first ever stay in any B&B and I had some mild reservations about residing in someone else’s house, rather than a hotel. Would I feel “underfoot” sort of speak? Would I have to be quiet? Could I come and go as I pleased? All of these feelings of reservation melted away immediately upon being greeted at the kitchen door by John Hughes and his associate greyhounds, Nigel and Margaret, upon my arrival. I felt like I was returning home after a long period away. What’s more, I felt as if I had known John and his associates forever – like long-time friends. This feeling of “being home” continued throughout my stay as I shared amazingly delicious and healthy breakfasts with other folks staying here. Then, during the evening, I drank wine and beer and told (ghost) stories around the big marble kitchen island with John, Nigel, Margaret and all of my really interesting and new friends. Our group was an amalgam of gay and straight folks, young and old, engineers, scientist, military pilots and circus performers – all sharing their diverse experiences. I will also reveal that I am not an easy person to impress. I own my own hotel and luxury vacation rental company in southern California and I know a good product when I see one. John has done a magnificent job with the Gardner Farm Inn from a hospitality standpoint and has also accomplished something most hotels and B&B’s cannot; John creates a gracious, welcoming and individual experience during your stay, the likes of which I have never experienced myself. I highly recommend The Gardner Farm Inn and dare you to NOT fall in love with the location, the house, the big marble kitchen island, John, Nigel and Margaret. You owe it to yourself to travel and stay at this establishment. And finally, I will plan my return trips to Troy/RPI around room availability at The Gardner Farm Inn. I will bet you come to the same conclusion too. J.Murphy, Palm Springs, CA

We stayed at the Gardner Farm Inn on a weekend in September, 2019 while visiting 2 of our grandchildren who attend RPI … We had a wonderful time. To begin, the decor of this large Victorian home, after having been lovingly restored by John in 2014, is beautiful. Every room adorned with many, many artifacts of a time long-ago where guests can spend hours looking, reading, touching ... and remembering. Each bedroom is themed with names and mementos of this classic era. We stayed in the Mae West Room which I highly recommend because of its very large retro bathroom and luxuriously comfortable bed. I would be remiss if I failed to mention Nigel and Margaret – who were the gentlest and most lovable greyhounds we have ever met. But the best part, which made our stay so enjoyable, was John’s warmth and hospitality - where each evening we found their way down to a beautifully marbled island in the Kitchen and with John, and other guests and with glasses of wine, we all shared our most interesting life-experiences with each other. We will surely return on our next trip to RPI.

We stayed in the Gardner Farm Inn close a dozen times over the last two years – not out of simple convenience or mere habit but through conscious choice. Our kids, our parents, in-laws, cousins and a brother have stayed here too; that alone should speak for itself but I thought it would be helpful to tell review readers why we find it so welcoming. The genuine warmth we found here continues to call us back. Every intriguing artifact adorning the inn is an authentically warm extension of its proprietor and innkeeper, John Hughs. John’s restoration and renovation choices in his beautifully restored 200-plus year old gem were seemingly effortless and unmistakably gorgeous… never pretentious, never trying-to-hard. It is really John’s home you’re invited into at Gardener Farm Inn. You will find an impeccably restored home filled with personally touching yet universally appealing vestiges of an era gone by that John has seamlessly fused with the comfortable, immaculately clean and coziest amenities we enjoy (and expect) today: meticulously clean, snugly bed rooms, generously spacious (again, meticulously clean) bathrooms, absolutely inspiring common areas and more of the heartfelt warm spirit that is John. He’s a most comfortable and engaging conversationalist with an ear open for a chat and eye on keenly respecting and protecting your privacy. More than an innkeeper, John is a personal host who has embraced us with an easy cordiality and genuine friendliness. And his depth of local knowledge always steers us in the right direction. We’ve stayed in all five of the inn’s creatively themed, cleverly appointed rooms at Gardner Farm. They are all our favorite room! Each room is complemented by thought-provoking relics, smart décor, exceptionally original art, and for lack of a better reference, really cool stuff! Rare books, personal photos, matchless antiques and inventive sculpture. Then there’s breakfast! A three green quiche John bases in sautéed onions, garlic, spices and feta cheese, or a lemon zest French toast with farm fresh sausage or smoked bacon and heirloom tomatoes. John has also kindly accommodated some of our dairy and gluten sensitivities. Your best bet is to see and feel the Gardner Farm Inn for yourself by pulling up a chair to John’s homey marble island. We feel better every time we stay there, and in the end, that’s why we keep returning. You will too. Enjoy!
