What a nice surprise this Inn was for us, so much character and amenities are way better than just 2 stars. The room is huge, beds comfortable and you get lots of pillows, good sheets and towels. They have a Keurig in each room and coffee pods provided. There is a refrigerator also. The property has a picnic area and 2 grills are available right by the lake. They also have bicycles, a tennis court, kayaks, boats, life safety vests all free, no charge to use. They have a pool but opens just in July and August. They are with in walking distance from 4 restaurants and a grocery store. Very close to Lake Placid.

Just returned from a relaxing 3 night trip to the Adirondack area and we stayed at this lovely place. When I had made reservations a few weeks ago the lady at the desk was so helpful and friendly so I was looking forward to our visit. We had a king suite lakeside balcony room because a view is important to me and it didn’t disappoint. I enjoyed sitting out on the balcony having my coffee and looking at the lake and nature in the early morning. So peaceful ! The bed was comfortable and it was furnished with a couch and chair. Plenty of space to be comfortable. The bathroom is small and definitely not room for 2 people at one time to get ready but it was newly remodeled and clean. There is no area to really put toiletries and no shelf in the shower itself but we made do. There is a keriug coffee maker in the room, a small fridge and microwave. We had a small issue with the room when we first arrived but it was promptly taken care of and their customer service and caring is impeccable. There are canoes and kayaks to use...life vests readily available and a nice pool . With everything going on with the Covid I felt this place was right on point with cleaning and masks being worn and overall great conditions even though it is an older property. It is within walking distance to a few eating places and a liquor store next door.( the lady there is the sweetest! ) There is also a marina right there so you could rent boats though we didn’t do that. The people running this hotel are super nice and would definitely recommend!

We booked the Superior Queen Lakefront Balcony ( Non Smoking ) room. Although there was really nothing Superior about it. The room was large, but not well appointed, not enough places to put things. There was no chair, couch or desk. Just a dresser and a couple of very small side tables/night stands. The bathroom was very small, 2 people could not be in there at the same time. The good: Nice view from the balcony, very friendly staff, plenty of boats of all sorts to take out, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, etc., comfortable beds. Convenient location. The not so good: the room was just surface clean, there was what looked like a finger or toe nail on the floor by the bed. There was plenty of dust around the nightstand. The air conditioner was absolutely filthy. I noticed some grime and opened the filter and there was so much dust on the filter it looked like the lint trap in the dryer, except it was filth and grime, there was dust and mold in the vent. Then there was a pile of dust on the floor under it from when I opened it . Luckily we were able to cool the room by opening the sliding door, we did not use the AC while we were there. There was also layers of dust on the bathroom fan. It seems to need some maintenance and deep cleaning. There was a small spot of what looked like blood on the comforter which was in between 2 sheets, but that part was visible at the edge. Although we had a smoke-free room, there were several times where I was unable to sit on the balcony since someone was smoking on the patio area below. There was also a small discrepancy between the amount of my reservation online verses what they actually charged at the time of check in by about $6, not a lot, but that's not the point when the room was over-priced as it was. As far as their COVID procedures, they all wore masks, and provided a couple of masks at check in. They seem to switch out Adirondack chairs daily. She said they wiped down door handles hourly, but we did not see anyone actually do that while we were there. Over all we were able to enjoy our time in Saranac Lake and were able to get past most of the issues with workarounds, but I would probably not stay here again and would hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Response from daniel brownell, Owner at Gauthier's Saranac Lake Inn and Hotel

Thank you for staying with us! The superior room is named that was because of the great view of the lake and the balcony that looks right over the lake front. We’re very competitive on pricing. Any other room in the area that is on the lake with a view and balcony is twice as much as our price. Sorry for the disappointment that you experienced.

As with all services and industry, Gauthier’s has chosen the post Covid gouge the customer route. I get that it’s in a tourist area but $190USD (taxes in) is an awful lot for a night at a an older, slipping roadside motel. Makes it worse when you keep waking up because of neighbour noise coming through the uninsulated door that connects with the adjacent room. Thought we had an extra person snoring, coughing and passing gas in our room. Bathtub installed around 1970. Stained, chipped and pretty ugly. On the positive side they offer free canoes and kayaks to guests.

We have traveled to Saranac in every season and ALWAYS find Gauthiers the most relaxing and comfortable place to stay. The rooms are always in top shape and most of the rooms are a few steps from the waters edge. We always take our kids, from tiny to teenager, and they love the kayaks, pool and lake access. Walking distance to nearly anything you would want in Saranac and the owner is always great and helpful. The coffee is the BEST!! We love to stay at a “locals” spot for the best of everything. If you are going to Saranac don’t miss this place!!

This Inn is very conveniently located within walking distance to many restaurants and the Village of Saranac Lake. We ate at the Casa de Sol and the Blue Line Brewery and enjoyed both. The rooms are clean and adequately appointed but nothing fancy. For Covid security the staff doesn’t enter the rooms once you’ve entered so you have to make your bed and dispose of your own trash which worked fine for us. Towels placed outside the door are replaced very quickly. The staff couldn’t be friendlier.
The highlights are the beautiful lake site lounge area with Adirondack chairs, the amazing vista and the water sport equipment provided free of charge. We went on a long canoe ride, navigating through a chain of lakes to a lock one day, and used the kayaks for a couple of hours another.
There are many mountains to explore within a few miles with varying degrees of difficulty. We found Mt. Ampersand challenging but we were able to summit in 3 hours. There you’ll find an absolutely amazing 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains and lakes.
With the leaves starting to turn, I’d highly recommend this motel for the foliage season.

The main thing on the plus side is the location right by the lake, including having a room balcony facing the lake, and the fact that canoes and kayaks are freely available for use. Also, the mattresses in the room were firm enough to be comfortable.
But in all other respects, this is basically a motel - musty smell in the room, no table, tiny bathroom, somewhat grumpy staff. All of which would be fine if it was cheaper.
So you just have to ask yourself whether the location by the lake and availability of canoes is worth effectively about $100 more per night than you would otherwise expect to pay for what you're getting.

Recently spent three nights here for first getaway post lockdown and it could not have been a better, more relaxing vacation. The room was spotless with access from the outside (car parked right outside room) with a beautiful lakefront balcony at the other end of the room. All Covid code was strictly adhered to with the husband and wife owners on site and as helpful as they could be. Fridge and microwave in room were a bonus with eating places just opening up. A range of kayaks, canoes and paddle boards available to take out on the lake. Would HIGHLY recommend this motel and I will certainly return again at some point.

Old school motel, so don’t expect an up to date business hotel set-up. However, clean, comfortable, nice touches (good coffee, real cups, and glasses including wine glasses, nice bed linens and towels). The balcony overlooking the water was just perfect on a beautiful early autumn evening. Great location in town. All the old school family resort hotel stuff - bikes, boats, games, pool and just the right amount of regional kitsch. Effi pop cient, helpful staff. Really liked that they’ve installed tile floors as nothing is grosser in the average older hotel than overworked carpeting.

Over rated on booking.com, poor value for money, paper thin walls, antiquated environment, uncomfortable beds, and they do need to have a veteran's discount if one were seeking the same. They did have a microwave in the room. No breakfast included.

I agree with Wausau-check directly with the Inn, they were very nice. Our room was large enough to accommodate extra but I can't say what the allow or would charge for.
There are more places to choose from in the Saranac Lake area.
