Hotel's Favorite
We've stayed here so many times in the last year that it's like our home away from home. We love coming to the Roxbury Experience because we love the Catskills, and we love coming to the Catskills because we love the Roxbury Experience! In 2018/2019 we stayed in the Adam's family themed room, the I dream of Jeannie themed room, the Mozart themed room, the star trek themed room (multiple times for the last two). All of our stays were just fantastic - designed and kept with love and care, and always with that feeling of home away from home. In 2020 we've started exploring the new Roxbury Stratton falls and I have to say it's better than any of the photos and videos on Instagram and Facebook! The creativity, imagination, dedication, hardwork, and blood sweat and tears put in to this place come through and it is a wonder of the Catskills. We've stayed in Galileo's town house and are currently cuddled up in the Dashing Haberdashery (it's so beautiful) and are already contemplating our next trip (which will be next week in the Beautiful Blacksmith if all goes well). Even with it's soft opening this place is immaculate and perfect! I can't recommend our home away from home enough!

My parents booked us a 2-night stay here in the “Wizards Emeralds” room, Wizard of Oz theme. It was quite the experience. The staff was friendly and cheerful, despite COVID restrictions and stress. The deep-cleaning measures and safety precautions they’ve taken are incredible. We had a very nice stay! Ordering breakfast was easy and the spa was relaxing! We enjoyed our stay and the staff very much. Our only complaint was local hours - much didn’t open until 11 or 12 mid-day and much was closed by 6pm. Perhaps because it was off-season, perhaps due to COVID.... but we struggled to find much to do. We drove the hour to Cooperstown and went brewery hopping which we very much enjoyed.

My husband and I were looking for a quiet relaxing place to stay to get away and just refocus on us. This place was the place to do it! Clean, beautiful, unique and quiet and just everything we needed. We stayed in room #1 shagadellic. It had a full kitchen table for 4, couch, one bed in living room and one in the bedroom. I made dinner and brunch in our room. We enjoyed the private spa areas. We hiked in the hiking trails in the area. We had a great dinner in Chappies down the street from the motel. The town is adorable and historic. This place is magical and special and absolutely amazing for the cost. Thank you Roxbury for a fantastic getaway and giving us a place to unplug and reconnect to who and what’s important.

I am giving this place 4 stars because although there were a lot of things that were missing due to COVID-19, it was an interesting experience. The place is truly beautiful and creative. The owner is also really nice. My friend and I went for a weekend getaway. It is approximately 3 hours away from the city. Just keep in mind The Roxbury has 3 separate places. Two are motels and are across the street from each other. The third place is a cottage or suite that is much bigger and beautiful and located 7 minutes away driving. The room we stayed in had a 70s vibe to it with beautiful colors. The room had a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker. I strongly urge you all to bring your own food. The place around has limited places to eat and I did not enjoy the two places I went for dinner. I went to Chappies and Sunday's and both had no taste and overpriced. Breakfast is provided by the Roxbury but due to Covid, it is all packed and very limited. My friend and I ate croissants, bagels, cheese danish, and drank some juice. There are other options that are provided. In their website you can request what items you'd like for breakfast. The Roxbury also has a jacuzzi and sauna but can only access by appointment. You will have to go online to their website and schedule one. It is $20 for the day. The jacuzzi was nice and they clean once you leave it. They give you 45minutes for each. The only cons I have to say about my room was the bathtub was located in the living room. For couples it would be ideal, but for a pair of friends, the lack of privacy was not ideal for us. Also, I suggest small curtains in the bathroom window. Although you can't see in if you aren't really tall, my friend and I didn't like the potential for a peeping tom. Our room also had 3 entrances. One connected to another room, one for the back yard and another for the parking lot. Just make sure to lock each and put something over the door if you are as paranoid as I get, lol. Another con is the area. There is limited things to do unless you are into nature. I myself am a city girl and like some form of activity. We asked a worker in the motel about activities in the area and they pointed to the corner of the entrance to where there were some information. My friend and I ended up going to the next town of Margaretville while attempting to find the farmers market. Margaretville has a few stores you can shop. Also note, that anything after 9pm is most likely closed. No one is out. Everything is dark and empty. Even the gas pumps don't work. My friend and I had a Blair witch project moment, which really made me think whether I'd like to visit again. However, in the morning the town looks really beautiful and the drive is relaxing. I had mixed feelings about the town. However, I am considering visiting again to stay in the suite since It looks very beautiful.

Response from Gregory Henderson, Owner at The Roxbury, Contemporary Catskill Lodging
Responded 1 week ago
Thank you so very much for the kind words and for understanding that because of the pandemic, we have had to invest substantial sums of money into new operations and have had to change things like breakfast, the need to schedule spa time, and many many more items. It has been an incredibly trying, scary, and difficult time for all of us and I must say every day has its ups and downs of operating a business during this pandemic. So thank you so much for understanding that part of it and for being interested in coming back. We wish that you had spoken to us about some of the things that you mention in your review while you were actually with us so that we could have tried to remedy them, but we understand that perhaps for some reason you did not want to do so. For instance, the bathtub in the room is indeed a design choice for the room in which you stayed, but we would have gladly moved you to a different room (pending availability) if we had known you were not happy with the floor plan, the doors, the window, and the other items you mentioned. Regarding the 3 doors in the room, the second door that leads out the back is meant to be a “perk” for that room type so that you have access to the back grounds. In November, when you came, the back grounds are not as glorious as they are in the summer, but there are still advantages like having direct access to the firepit in the back yard that is available for guests whenever they would like to use it. There are, of course, deadbolts on every door and no one, even without the deadbolt on, would be able to get into the room unless they somehow got access to your digitally programmed card key. The door that connects to the room next to where you stayed is what is known in the hotel industry as an “adjoining room.” When we built the wing where you stayed, we purposefully built adjoining rooms so that larger groups can have access to two rooms. Bear in mind, however, that it is not just one door. There are connecting doors on BOTH sides and there is no way to get them open unless you have a key. Only management has the key and we open both doors only when it is a group traveling together who have requested the adjoining doors opened. We also invested in significant vinyl soundproofing (also used by the CIA for their soundproof chambers) that is put between the doors, so you hopefully never hear your neighbors. Regarding the window in the “toilet room,” this too was a design choice. We felt that the rooms needed light coming in from both sides of the room, so we put that window there – as you mentioned albeit very high – so that if you have the door from the toilet room open some additional light comes into the room. But if you have the door closed, no light will come into the room from that side. And in 16 years of operation, we have never had a “peeping Tom,” although in order to be one, for that window one would need a ladder to reach the opening and the person on the ladder would be visible to everyone in the parking lot and anyone driving by. We purposefully designed those very small windows up so high that they were way above even an extremely tall person’s head. Regarding the area, I am horrified to hear that you asked a “worker” about what to do in the area and they just pointed to brochures? I will get to the bottom of that because all of our staff has been instructed to help guests with whatever their needs might be. I would be curious to know if the person you asked was in the front office or a housekeeper? I will find out. As mentioned above, you came in November and it is indeed a very slow month and an odd month because the beauty of fall foliage season is gone but it is not quite ski and snow season yet. Many of our guests love the fact that the area is very rural, but they still enjoy the bevy of outdoor activities (like hiking, etc.) or the many day trips or drives or other things that you can do. If you decide to come back, which we sincerely hope you do, I hope you will talk to us about helping you plan your stay so that we can point out activities, restaurants, gas stations, and any other requests you might have. You mentioned that our third location “7 minutes away is a cottage or suite.” It is actually only two miles down the road and less than 7 minutes and it is an entire resort comprised of 8 large fantasy cottages, a Mansion with 7 themed guest rooms; a full spa area (also something our motel guests can access) with a seasonal swimming pool, and a trail system with a 50’ waterfall. I hope that you walked the trail and experienced the waterfall and our other spa area during your stay. If not, we hope you will do it if you come for a return visit. Thank you again for coming to see us and for the kind words.
