We arrived around 3:30 pm and found an envelope with the key to the inn and to our room. We were alone in the inn with a dirty room and not enough towels. The next morning when we went down for breakfast we found packaged individual breakfast cereals, soft croissants, hard English muffins and 3 leftover packaged danish. Also, cold eggs and bacon. What had been described as a gourmet continental breakfast with wonderful homemade granoloa was the stale cold leftovers from a Rotary Club breakfast. When I pointed this out to the manager he suggested that "perhaps the eggs could be heated". We opted to eat at Billie's, a wonderful neighborhood place with a hearty breakfast.

When I returned to the room I called the woman I made the reservation with who seemed to reside at The Dutchess in Rhinebeck. She said she would reduce the rate and suggested that since the breakfast wouldn't be any better the next day, that we check out. We did not leave but did take her up on the offer of not having breakfast at the inn.

Once again we were left alone in the inn, and the next morning went over to Billie's for another wonderful breakfast. The girl at the front was there to collect our payment and was prepared to discount the room some, I told her that it had cost $40 for my family of 3 to dine elsewhere for breakfast for 2 days. She got permission from the manager, not on site, to make the deduction I requested.

There were no apologies and we left. My family and I have stayed in many different kinds of accomodations in the US and abroad and this was the first time that we could not eat breakfast at a bed and breakfast, and were left alone to fend for ourselves.

I would not recommend the inn to anyone and would wonder about the service at The Dutchess as well. Anonymous

This inn is cluttered, messy, disorganized and full of antiques that are not in good shape.

The king bed is two twins pushed together with a large bump in the middle.

There are screens and curtains everywhere in the halls and in the parlor that are hiding cleaning equipment, etc.

The parlor looks like a place where one would have a seance or consult a medium.

Everywhere there is bric a brac and stuff.

It leaves you feeling like you shouldn't take off your shoes or unpack or pull back the bed covers. Even if everything in this inn is actually clean, it appears dirty and dingy because of the clutter surrounding you.

I chose not to take a shower after peeking behind the shower curtain.

I could go on, but suffice it to say, I will not be back. It felt incredibly overpriced for what it is. I get that the 200-250 per night price is a reflection of demand for rooms in the region, but really no price would have made me feel good about my stay.

Honestly, it felt creepy and possibly haunted. This topic has been covered in other reviews.

Thanks for taking the time to write. As far as I knew, we weren't haunted before your arrival....were you visited in the night? Seriously, I'm sorry we didn't meet your standards. I personally check every room and have never found an issue with cleanliness that wasn't immediately addressed. Periodically something may appear out of sorts and if you let me know, I'll happily rectify whatever it is. I admit, I do collect tea pots, photos, artifacts from Egypt where my husband was born, books and videos. Some are for my pleasure since I live here and some are for yours. This is an old house after all (1841) and hiding places are usually turned into guest spaces, so if you see a screen or curtain, it's generally NOT FOR YOUR EYES. However, that being said, the two beds are connected with a foam wedge to prevent anyone from falling in a perceived crack. I usually have 3-4" of foam on either side to balance it and make it flat. Mea culpa if it prevented you from sleeping comfortably. Did you have breakfast? Did you enjoy the 24 hour coffee/tea, hibiscus iced tea, fresh fruits, yogurts, warm cookies? Did you read the Wall Street Journal or the NY Times? I would encourage you to pull back th covers and check out our crisply pressed white sheets and Ralph Lauren bedding. Our antique furniture is in pretty good shape for its years. Periodically I change things if I feel the piece has taken abuse from guests who are not accustomed to staying in a B&B. All in all, I'll review your comments again, take a little more time to delve into your concerns as I really do take them seriously. I'm even thinking about hosting a seance now that you've mentioned it! PS. Next time, think about staying in one of the new hotels in Kingston for a more sterile experience!

Not sure if we went to the place with all the glowing reviews as Inn had no resemblance to them. The hostess was pedantic and curt- when we were bring our bags in a man tried to barge into the room to use our bathroom- the host and hostess were nowhere in sight after 6PM. A large group hung out on the porch with 3 loud children under no one's control. The room was seedy with a noisy and inefficient wall A/C bathroom was teeny

A charmless B&B

Thanks for taking the time to voice your displeasure! I recall your arrival and our conversation that you had booked through a travel partner. I offered you an alternate room on the first floor for your convenience as you were on an extended trip and carrying an extreme amount of luggage. The room had a king bed and a twin, a large bathroom that is fully wheelchair accessible (not tiny by any means) and an oversized shower with a seat. The room also had two lovely side chairs, a dresser, flat screen TV and the original and grand 1841 brick fireplace. There were 4 triple glazed windows with room darkening shades and a window a/c unit that is framed in wood and foam for excellent insulation. Your description of the inn and of the owner (the hostess) is so 'off' that I am having trouble believing that you actually met me or stayed at my home. I'm not sure what you expected me to be other than warm and welcoming but your descriptive words do not apply to me or anyone who assip1sts me. Perhaps during your extended vacation you have confused me with another accommodation. We chatted about your future trip, and your lovely home city of San Antonio. I showed you into your room and discussed area dining options and I asked where you planned to tour and was as helpful to you as I am to every guest who passes through my door. Not at anytime was someone in the inn to 'barge in to use your bathroom'. As my husband and I live on site, we are normally very accessible. If for any reason you needed to 'find' me, my cell phone is listed in the guest manual found in every room. I take pride in being a warm and friendly person who goes out of my way to ensure that you enjoy a comfortable night sleep, a great breakfast and sincere hospitality. I'll chalk this up to your inexperience with the workings of a bed and breakfast as opposed to a large cookie cutter hotel or perhaps just 'confusion'. I hope that you will return and we can make lemonade out of your lemons! Pat Holden, proprietor.

If you need to be close to Bard College this place is adequate (and also wonderfully close to the terrific Mercato restaurant!), but I much prefer my stays in Hudson (at the Merchant House) and Rhinebeck (Delamater Inn). At those, both the inn and restaurant options are better.
At Red Hook Inn, the proprietors are gracious but the inn itself has some problems. Despite seemingly sincere efforts, the food is adequate at best (I skipped my breakfast altogether on the third morning), the first floor entry and sitting room have a funky smell (animals?) which I was happy to leave, and the noise level is the worst I've ever experienced at a B&B. The window air conditioners are only installed with foam at sides, so noise from street comes right in, and it's loud! At $250+ per night, this was a disappointment. If it was half that price I'd have overlooked the shortcomings and just appreciated the location. Won't stay there again.

First impression walking up to the front porch, landscape bushes need trimmed, weeds in the bedding, weeds in the flower pots, empty pots stacked in the corner. Walking into hallway to check-in desk stacked high with papers, books, magazines. ( Owner had contacted us prior to arrival to change our chosen room on first floor to a second floor room. OK but she didn't cancel original room. Just shows disorganization) Backyard was overgrown in weeds and cluttered with lawn "decor". Chicken coop against the back of the house near above ground hot tub.

Our room was cluttered. I counted 26 antique knick-knacks, like a mirror with a dirty brush and nail file. An antique setee with two chairs, a corner table with two chairs, but not a chair you could safely sit in. A thick pile rug on the wood planked floor had a large dirty gray spot. The bathroom had 80's style "jacuzzi" tub, sink, mismatched towel bars, with one torn off the wall, and the toilet had to be flushed several times.

The king bed had a soft but comfortable mattress and upscale linens. A large amoir had a TV and was flanked by two decorative antique lamps.

Breakfast was served in a dining room at a large long table. First, the chef served us a small fruit cup and warn danish (1/4 of piece) Weak coffee, tea, and juice beverage. Eggs forentine was 2 poached eggs, a couple leaves of spinach, and brownish yellow sauce. (The egg yokes were hard, sent back, but returned still hard.) Next morning again eggs "any way your wish", toast and strawberry jam.

Available in the hall was iced tea, Kuerig coffee maker, and homemade cookies.

The owner Pat was friendlly to the extreme telling anything and everything. She talked about the "help" and said one girl "just doesn't get it" and she'll have to let her go. Another "previous" worker broke iced tea container in the hall.

Not a pleasant place to relax, too much disorganization and clutter.

I'm really sorry that your stay with us prompted such a tough review! At The Red Hook Inn we pride ourselves on providing a great product, lots of smiles, chatter, good conversation among guests and owners and a clean environment. I appreciate your 'first impression' comments as I do care how our inn is represented right from the beginning of your arrival. Positive and constructive criticism is always appreciated because it helps me to correct any defects that affect your stay. The grounds are managed every week, sometimes more, but in our season of changing weather, rain and wind, although we do our best, we aren't always able to address overgrowth in the fastest time possible. The 'clutter' in our front hall is all for our guests. The etagere has brochures, magazines, periodicals, a computer that is available to our guests, a coffee station, a hanging key area and behind my 'check in desk' are the refilling supplies. Asking you in advance to move from a first floor room to an upstairs suite was to accommodate someone in a wheelchair who was unable to negotiate steps. What you failed to mention was that you were given a complimentary upgrade from a standard room to a premium suite, the largest in our inn with the most amenities. The antique 'clutter' is seen by most guests as charming. I'm really happy that you enjoyed our lovely king bed and upscale linens! The towel bar in the bathroom had recently been removed and replaced with a temporary as all rooms will be repainted and refreshed with paint and accents over the winter. The 80's style jacuzzi tub is a favorite among guests and I'm not sure if they now have a '12 version but I'll look into it! The antique settee and other chairs are absolutely available and safe to use and the rug may have had a spot that had been addressed as someone had spilled wine in the days before your arrival. The fact that you had to 'flush several times' is clearly addressed in a note above the toilet that asks that you honor the old plumbing in this 1841 home by holding down the handle until the water flushes completely. There are things that I can truly fix and there are things that I truly won't. When there is thought to be a rapport between guests and hosts, we all let our hair down and laugh at the silliness or frustrations of life and running a business related to the public. I am the first one to laugh at myself and often reflect that our business is a reborn version of "The Bob Newhart Show' and that we do have 'Larry, Daryl and Daryl' and that sometimes it is the owners and front desk managers. We make light of a business that can be very draining dealing with the public and that every cobweb isn't always there the morning you arrive. I absolutely did explain that our lovely china container that we used to serve iced tea was broken by a former employee. It was truthful. I also laughed at our version of 'Stephanie' on the previously mentioned TV series because we have great people who work with us who aren't always 'on the ball', but worth their weight in gold. In closing, we will continue to be who we are, we will continue to enjoy sharing our lovely old federal colonial with all of it's quirks and we will enjoy hosting guests who enjoy this environment. I would suggest that you choose a different type of accommodation in the future where the lines are simple, modern, sterile and business like, instead of a charming bed and breakfast country inn where we actually interact with and care about our guests.

Both the owners and the town are very quaint and nice, but the property is very dated and dark. The rooms are dusty and feel extremely old. The room were broiling hot even though it was in the 30's outside. The "fresh flowers" are plastic. The lamp shades are covered in plastic. The whole place reminded me of my grandmother's house of the 1980's in a bad way. The Eggs Benedict that was served for breakfast was basically inedible. Stale muffins, eggs cooked through, half a slice of Canadian bacon between the two English muffins. The Hollandaise was made with mustard! The place is on a main road so there is traffic noise all night, though the bed was comfortable. I have stayed in other B&B's for significantly less and been much much more satisfied.

The Red Hook Country Inn is a lovely 170 year old building in the heart of the downtown Village of Red Hook conveniently located along Broadway within minutes to everything interesting that you would wish to visit in the Hudson Valley. We are happy that you found our village quaint as it is truly a charming place to live, dine, shop and play. Our rooms are all different in theme, mostly kept in a 'dated' style to ensure that a guest who wishes to be visiting an 'antique' house will experience just that...memories of Grandma! While we do place fresh flowers daily in all of our rooms, for accent in two of our rooms we do have silk roses and giant sunflowers in the bathrooms. Fortunately thebathroom facilities are not dated, just the period furnishings, floors (170 years), floors and ceilings. We paint the plaster walls and the original house doors annually and during our winter season we have just completed the process. As far as the excessive heat, we are very excited to hear about this as we just completed a full insulation project in our attic that is proving to maintain the heat in the inn! We now can turn off the heat at night and our 2 year old, triple glaze windows are able to be opened and closed securely and safely. Also, each room has a working ceiling fan and we also have table fans should anyone require more than that. The Eggs Benedict is a favorite of our guests and is not made with mustard but with the true ingredients of a chef..lemon juice and worcestershire. We are very careful to give our recipe to anyone who questions and as my husband, Chef Nabil, is a Saucier, his soups and sauces are extraordinarily original and delicious. Since breakfast on Sunday features Eggs Benedict, with fresh fruit, all of our guests also have the option of eggs any style, french toast, fresh oatmal, granola style cereals, oatmeals, yogurts, bacon, sausage, fresh toast, homemade jellies & jams, fruit juices and farm fresh milk for their coffee and tea. If a guest prefers something other for dietary issues such as gluten free (we always have a loaf of gluten free 'bread' on hand)or for some reason or another requests an different or additional breakfast, the option is always available with a smile. Our housekeeping staff works diligently to ensure that your stay is positive with careful ironing of our linens, daily dusting and vacuuming and whatever else it takes to make your experience wonderful. We hope you will come back to give us another try and sleep in another one of our very comfortable beds!

This is only the second review I've ever written. I needed everyone to know just how horrible the owners were with us.

I don't even know where to begin. We booked a room for Presidents' day weekend (just sat and sun nights). Unfortunately that friday afternoon my dad was rushed to the hospital, he was hemorrhaging and rushed to the ICU. So I called crying and flustered at 6pm the night before to cancel (24 hrs notice) as I was on my way to the hospital in Philadelphia where I assumed I'd be spending the weekend. The owner Pat said "no problem, go to your father, I understand." So I felt relieved that she was understanding of the situation. It is a B&B after all. So we get back from the weekend and see that we were charged the full amount on our credit card ($340 for 2 nights at a 25% february discount). We were told that we had 30 days to use the credit. So I rebooked a weekend 2 weeks later. And, of course, another disaster hit and my boyfriend with whom I was supposed to travel last minute had to have a suspicious bump removed from his foot that thursday. I felt jinxed. I didn't call to cancel again until friday when my boyfriend said that the pain was so bad that he couldn't even consider going away for the weekend and staying in a cramped room. Pat said she had already turned someone down for a room 1 of the 2 nights. She said that if she managed to rent out the room for the sat that we could keep our credit for at least 1 night. Well she didn't get it rented and she never even called us back to tell us that she wasn't able to rent it out. We called and pleaded, stating that we are in a recession (hence a getaway in upstate ny vs long weekend in miami) and that these things were beyond our control and that we would appreciate it if we could at least keep our credit. She said no, that she was running a business and that she had a mortgage to pay. So she said maybe she could do something for us if we came up. So we did. 2 weeks later. We didn't call beforehand thinking that something else would happen, like we would blow a flat tire or something. So I thought we would just show up. Her inn was empty. I mean literally empty, she wasn't even there. We walked into an overwhelming smell of mothballs like at my grandma's house and there was lace and floral patterns and weird collectibles everywhere. Outdated and dusty. Anyway, we called her and she was at the hospital with her uncle. Ok, so maybe she will have a heart knowing what it's like to have to drop everything and be with a loved one in the hospital. Nope. She told us she could let us stay the night at 50% of the listed price. AFTER WE ALREADY GAVE HER $340 FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. We couldn't do it. We couldn't give her another penny of our hard-earned money. She said that I was strongarming her by just showing up at her doorstep (um, it's a B&B, that's what you do except the owners are usually there to welcome you). She said she'd call us back a couple hours later after talking to her husband. She never did. We called back at 10pm and she said the 50% offer was the best she could do. So I bidded her a goodnight and decided to stay in Rhinebeck instead.

So word to the wise, stay away. Go to the Beekman Arms or the Olde Rhinebeck Inn. Much friendlier and nicer decor and ambiance. Her inn is so old-fashioned looking and smells like it too. Oh, and if the hot tub was enticing at all, don't get too excited. It was covered in plastic and melted snow behind the house on the edge of the parking lot. Not exactly what we were expecting. The place looks much better on the site than it does in person.

In fairness to all of our many guests, our cancellation policies are clearly outlined on our website and stated verbally on last minute phone bookings. Although we understand TRUE 'emergencies' and make every effort to work with those involved, just as we did with this guest, we cannot please everyone all of the time. We offer a tremendous amount of service and good will to all of our guests, without exception. Our 170 year old inn is a warm, welcoming and friendly place to stay, and is also our home. Vindictive reviews are, unfortunately, the direct result of someone who does not care to adhere to the policy of the business and believes this will cause the business to suffer.

I stayed at the Red Hook Inn a week ago while I was out on business. From the website it seemed as if it would be the perfect place to relax after a hard day’s work. The room I booked was very ‘cozy’, perhaps a little too cozy, as it was a very small and cramped. Good thing I was traveling alone so this didn’t cause too much of a problem. The water pressure in the shower was fantastic, but to my surprise the drain wasn’t cleaned very well causing a backflow of disgusting strands of hair and soot. Not ideal after a hard day’s work.

Another reason I booked this inn was the convenience of the restaurant downstairs. I was excited to try out the Roasted Garlic Restaurant as I had read some great reviews on it but was again disappointed. I expected an exquisite Mediterranean dining experience but left the table rather bored. This could’ve been a matter of personal taste but the upside of it all is that they have a full bar to make up for the food.

We spent some time at the Red Hook Inn during the first week of October, 2005. The Inn is ideally located at the center of charming Red Hook, NY which is convenient to many other points of interest in the Hudson Valley area. The new owners did make us feel like family, as other reviewers have noted. The highlight of our visit was the delightful Sunday brunch at the Roasted Garlic Restaurant, which was one of the best we've ever had. The sheer number of dishes offered was impressive--but more impressive was that each dish had its own sophisticated, yet home-cooked taste that you don't find very often. The staff was very helpful and friendly, and we will definitely return again on our next visit to the Hudson Valley.

Booked 2 nights at this inn based upon most of the reviews. Although initially put off by the unkempt backyard with roaming chickens and the odor that goes along with them, we didn't want to judge too quickly. So disappointed as soon as we stepped into the foyer. Overwhelmed by a musty smell which can only be described by the scent of your grandmother's basement. The overwhelming clutter and dark, worn appearance of the main living room didn't help. Even the owner mentioned that one of the guests said it looked like there was a seance being conducted!!! Boy was that guest right!!!! Take a serious look at the review by "betwixt-and-between" before booking. We wish we had taken them more seriously!!! They hit the nail on the head.
In all fairness, the room, although equally as cluttered, did have nice crisp and clean sheets and the bathroom was ample and clean as well. I was rather unhappy though when the bar of soap was unwrapped and appeared to be from the guest before! I had a cold shower the first day as well.
Breakfast foods were plentiful but I couldn't get myself to eat the food from a house that seemed less than clean. All of this for well over $250.00 per night? We were the fools.

Thanks for taking the time to pen a review. I'm certainly disappointed with your words but obviously taking them to heart. We laugh about the age of the building and the history and actually don't want to make it appear as a current 'cookie cutter' type of property. Our planned improvements are always happening and sometimes they are invisible but effective. The physical improvements generally occur over the winter and by late in the season, signs of wear and tear begin to show. Once people 'get on a roll' with negative writing they tend to go overboard. Our home is comfortable and clean and you are well fed 24 hours a day. I wish you would have contacted me during your stay to discuss your concerns instead of hiding behind an anonymous review. Please be in touch with me so that I can learn what is actually behind your upsetment. I encourage reviews, both positive and negative and in fairness, I always ask you to alert me if you have a problem. Again, I'm sorry you weren't happy with our 180 year old historic building.
