Hotel's Favorite
We had a lovely three night stay at Pongwe lodge as part of our honeymoon and really enjoyed it. It’s idilc, relaxing, secluded island location, really made it a great honeymoon experience. Frank and staff were so friendly, welcoming and created a relaxed atmosphere.
The restaurant was great, with brilliant service and the food was delicious, we tried lots of fresh, tasty seafood. We enjoyed a trip to stonetown on one of the days which was enjoyable.
We would highly recommend this hotel.

Let's be clear, The Island isn't cheap, but it's a really lovely place to stay and the staff were, pretty much without exception, fantastic. We felt relaxed from the moment we arrived to the moment we left.
We had been concerned when we realised that the rooms don't have air con, but we found the ceiling fans perfectly adequate. Having to get water bottles refilled at reception was a little odd at first, but hardly an inconvenience.
If we had to suggest a couple of tiny improvements they would be to consider a lunch menu or adding a couple of 'light bite' options on the restaurant menu - something like a Nicoise salad bowl or similar as the snack menu only kicks in at 4pm. Bed-side mats would also help to stop sand getting into the beds. Neither of these spoiled our stay in any way, but it is so often the minute details that turn really good into great.

This place looks so romantic on the website, so what better day to arrive than St Valentine’s Day? We drove ourself from the ferry port in Stonetown and it took about 70 or 80 minutes. Directions via google maps were straightforward, and there is free parking on the mainland!
Eagle eyed porters waiting 150m away at the entrance ambled over and insisted on taking all of our bags. We enjoyed a free mixed fruit juice as we checked in in the heavily shaded reception area, and were shown to our room. A real treat, as we had the Sultan’s Lodge which is so spacious and overlooks the ocean with a constant onshore breeze riffling through the net Windows, which together with the fan turned up to 5 meant we really didn’t need A/C though I gather it was particularly hot during our stay. In fact all of the lodges front the sea. We had no trouble sleeping, and tended to go to bed around 9 and wake at 7. The catch up on our sleep has been one of the best things.
There is a small pool just for guests (just 6 lodges for adults only) so never more than 12 residents. Maybe 80 metres away at the other end of the island is a top restaurant and bar open to all (best seafood), with several other hotels in the vicinity, but never busy. The hotel is close to the mainland and normally only cut off for an hour or two, but the tide heights were variable between 2.5 - 3.5 metres during our stay. As the magnificent beach shelves very gently it can be a long walk to the ocean (which in fact is a coastal lagoon with a reef a couple of km out.
Possibly the best thing about the hotel is the staff, which is a huge testament to manager Amin as everyone, from the waiting staff special praise to Vaileth and top barman Juma but everyone was continuously welcoming and positive. Jacub also deserves special mention. There is ample security but smiling and low key, the gardens pool and path are very well maintained every day.
The rooms are serviced twice a day by similarly positive staff.
We have never met 2 happier dogs than Arra and Luna who like to bounce along beside you when walking in the morning, or flop near you in the shade when it gets hotter.
We never met a mosquito in 9 days. After 2 days I took my watch off and after 3 my shoes. I have worn neither since.
We will be very sorry to leave tomorrow, and would book again in a heartbeat.
Any suggestions for improvement, none really. The fine old furniture made from salvaged boat is very impressive, but an occasional softer and lighter sofa, perhaps in the rooms would be welcome, as would a bedside reading light ( though not sure whether this might attract flying things)
Well done to everyone involved.

We have been on the Island Pongwe in August with my daughter and wife.
We had the chance in.getting the villa that was particularly perfect. The staff is excellent and Amine and Margaretta do an amazing job.
The restaurant is perfect with their excellent chef who prepares the best food in Zanzibar. The prices are fairly honest and sleeping there is an outstanding experience as it regroup only 5 lot in total who gives you privacy and quiet in the middle of the ocean.
The beach around are pretty much the same as in Seychelles with different type of shade of blue. When it is low tide high tide the show is different.
The swimming pool is nice as it give you the impression of being in a hotel without being with hundreds of people.
Thanks again for Amine, Marguaritta, Jumaa, Penda, Eric and all the staff for being caring of your customers in.order to reach their satisfaction.
Back to you soon!

This is such a unique magical experience. The feeling of being surrounded by water, the tranquility of the sound of gentle splashing waves. You walk from your room directly in to the ocean, no one to disturb you, which is different than some of the other beaches in Zanzibar. At low tide you can wonder far out in crystal clear blue water. You get both stunning sunsets and sunrises !
The staff was superb, professional, kind and accommodating. Eating every meal with perfect views of the water, with some of the best food in Zanzibar. (Mixed seafood platter was out of this world). On top of that, they offer an even more special dinning experience for two, perched right over a cliff. Isolated from the rest of the island, which they decorate with beautiful flowers and create the most romantic setting imaginable. Special thank you to our friend Juma for putting in the extra effort and making our romantic evening unforgettable!
Their two dogs are also super friendly and cute and will always find you for belly rubs throughout the day.
Margarita, who manages the property, was also super chill and made every and any request seem easy.
We will never forget our time on the Island !
Asante Sana !!!

A Truly Unforgettable Experience
Rarely do I find myself saying this, but my stay at the Island Lodge on Pongwe in Tanzania was an absolutely no-compromise experience from start to finish. Every aspect of our stay was flawlessly executed, leaving us with unforgettable memories and a sense of utter contentment.
Luxurious Perfection in the Sultan Room
We were fortunate enough to stay in the Sultan room, and from the moment we entered, we were captivated by its sheer beauty. The exquisite furniture and meticulous attention to detail showcased the dedication and care that went into crafting this stunning space. It felt like stepping into a world where every element had been thoughtfully curated to provide a lavish and comfortable haven.
Attentive Staff and Friendly Atmosphere
The staff at the Island Lodge went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and cared for. Their genuine warmth and friendliness created an atmosphere that immediately put us at ease. Whether it was a simple inquiry or assistance with something more specific, they were always ready to help with a smile.
They also have a few well behaved pets on the island. They made us feel home. Feel free to visit the islands instagram page, they have a review story of their staff.
Culinary Delights That Delighted
The food at the Island Lodge was nothing short of exceptional. We were treated to a culinary journey that tantalized our taste buds and showcased the vibrant flavors of the region. Every meal was a delight, and it was evident that a great deal of effort and expertise went into creating dishes that were not only delicious but also beautifully presented.
There is always a very nice touch of Italian perfection, subtle but definitely to be respected.
Nature’s Grand Performance
The breathtaking view from the lodge was a spectacle in itself. Witnessing the ebb and flow of the tide in the morning, seeing the shoreline transform as water receded, and observing the staff gather seaweed—all of these moments added a unique touch to our stay. Nature’s performance, with its rhythmic cycles, was a sight to behold and an experience that left a lasting impression.
A Place of True Beauty and Tranquility
In a world filled with constant activity, the Island Lodge on Pongwe offers a rare escape into a realm of beauty and tranquility. It’s not just a place to stay; it’s an immersion into a lifestyle that celebrates elegance, relaxation, and the stunning natural surroundings.
In conclusion, my stay at the Island Lodge on Pongwe was a perfect blend of luxury, warmth, and natural wonder. From the splendid Sultan room to the friendly staff, exquisite dining, and mesmerizing tidal views, every element harmonized to create an experience that exceeded all expectations. If you’re seeking a getaway that redefines relaxation and indulgence, the Island Lodge is a destination that will leave an indelible mark on your heart.

We stayed at the island pongwe for four days during our honetmoon and it was amazing!
It is a small island with only 6 rooms so it’s never crowded and you can relax in the calm!
We stayed in the ocean view room, it has such a beautiful view on the ocean and a Semi-private access to the bitch. It is amazing and depending on the time of the day you can enjoy a peacefull walk on the sand or just bathe in the ocean!
Also the restaurant is amazing! The food is very tastefull and sophisticated they use only fresh products
The place is very beautiful but the best part was the people who work there. They are so nice and welcoming, always smiling and asking if you need anything .
Special Thanks to Juma who was so nice. He took care of us during the whole stay and set a very beautiful table for a romantic dinner on our last night and we had such a great time getting to know him !

We visited The Island with my fiancee and it was an incredible experience. This little gem of an island is one of a kind. Around 6 bangalows, beautifully decorated and clean.
Environment friendly plastic free and with recyclable products. The food is outstanding. Their onsite restaurant serves delicious pasta and other seafood dishes as well as delicious breakfasts. Their sea urchin spaghetti is out of this world.
The staff is super friendly and professional. Vaileth served us most of the times and she was the best. Always happy and making sure we were satisfied with food and service. The managers Amine and his wife Margo are running this little paradise to perfection. Dont hesitate to book, if you can make it to Pongwe, the Island is a must.

We spent a week here and cannot fault the professional, smiley staff team. From the special couple who manage this amazing eco friendly chill paradise, to the restaurant staff and hospitality, all ensured we had everything we needed.
The resort, I’d like to describe it more as staying with friends, is exceptional. The daily tides around the island, change the azure blue sea to lapis blue every day. We enjoyed pleasant ocean breeze every day, so the fans in our bungalow were enough to keep us cool at night.
The seafood in the restaurant is local and fresh and the cocktails and wine selection spot on.
If you want to spend days totally unwinding, this is the place for you.
As very seasoned travellers - we will be back- and that says it all xx
