Situated on a hill in the most beautiful valley on the most beautiful island in Cape Verde, Aldeia Manga is a little piece of paradise. It is effectively an eco lodge. Simple bungalows on a hill, no frills but beautifully set on the hillside. Getting to it is an experience in itself. The meals are communal, you eat together on a covered veranda and for us that was a huge part of the charm; the opportunity to exchange experiences and travelling ideas with the other guests. This is a destination for walkers. The trails weave along the valley sides, through intensively cultivated small holdings of sugar cane, bananas, almonds, bread fruit, and all manner of vegetables. The paths are good but can be vertiginous in places. Probably the best spot in all our Cape Verde stay (and we did Sal, Santiago, Santo Antao and Sao Vicente)

Positives: - overall character and atmosphere of the place is truly special. All the huts and houses are situated in a (very) large garden, you are encircled by plants, trees and feel that you really are in the middle of the Capeverdean nature. We've been staying in a larger holiday house with two floors and plenty of space but the smaller bungalows look very nice as well. - pool! It is actually an artificial pond with lots of small fish and warm water. You cannot get anything better after the whole day full of trekking. And the view on the mountains right in front of you is just stunning. - both managers are very communicative and will give you various ideas for hiking (they have lots of colourful maps but always just one copy, so you need to make a photo of them). They will also arrange a taxi that you will need to reach more distant places where you will start your trips (like the Cova crater etc.). And they have a guitar available that you can play! - I also liked the eco-friendly attitude - clearly visible effort to minimize waste etc., I think it's sth. that deserves our praise. Negatives: - it is not anything bad per se but keep in mind that you are relatively far away from any cities/villages. If you came for trekking - as probably most of the people do - you are in a right place, but if you need shops etc., you have to take a taxi to get there. - the same goes with the dining options - aldeia manga serves a buffet dinner each evening for 12 euros per person, it is a good way how to spend time with other guests on the terrace and enjoying the magic atmosphere of the place, but again - it is basically the only choice. If you want to have sth. else, nothing is too close by.

I stayed at the wonderful Eco Lodge, Aldeia Manga, with my cousin last year and it remains one of the highlights of my lifetime of holidaying experiences. We were looked after so well and cheerfully by Carmelita, Elton and all the staff and the views, our lodging and the delicious food were all to be celebrated. It felt like a hidden paradise after a long journey to get there. It is a truly beautiful, unique place and the lodge sits proudly amongst the hills as a monument to the kindness, care and friendliness of the people of Santo Antao. If you want a special, tranquil time ...head for Aldeia Manga! Simon and Mathew

A good place to rest after hiking. The rooms are simple and basic thatched huts with no distracting luxuries. Instead you will find a nice pool area (in fact the pool is a pond in which you can take a swim or let the small fish pedicure your tired feet) and a dining section that invites you to meet the other guests to exchange experiences and tips for your next hike.

The half dozen rooms are separate cabins, furnished basically but adequately, and with en-suite facilities. The site is steep and access is down a steep flight of steps, but the reward is the fantastic views of this amazing and very fertile valley; quite a contrast to much of Cape Verde. Service was good; English spoken. Good food; buffet meals on a part-covered terrace. The staff will arrange transport for walks, ferry transfers, and getting to other parts of the island; they can also provide information about local walks. Unusually for Cape Verde, there is a (very nice) pool.
