Melia Dunas Beach Resort & Spa boasts an excellent location near a fabulous beach, which is a highlight for guests. However, opinions on the resort are mixed, with some travelers finding the rooms spacious and clean, while others describe them as dated and not well-maintained. While the amenities such as pools and beach access are appreciated, issues with room servicing and insufficient towels dampen the experience. The atmosphere is lively, yet some feel it requires rejuvenation. Service quality varies, ranging from friendly to disorganized. Furthermore, the value is criticized for not aligning with the high costs.

We came for 3 weeks on 2nd January- a great relaxing time with few issues. There are many, many positives but sadly some small niggles- mainly the restaurants- not worth 50€ each per day as a VIP. We made do with the 4 per week included in our package.
The full island tour we took was most interesting- especially Shark Bay/ Blue Eye and our lunch in Palmeiria.
Our room 6007 had a large gravel terrace, A great room shower with lots of powerful hot water but the shower head- 6 feet 6inches high + non adjustable [if you don’t want to wet your hair??].
Surprisingly large room with a full size fridge and hob/ kitchen utensils.
The room cleaning was good, Air con is good, Wi-Fi in room and around all of resort area was very good [not up to fibre at home but good]. Much better than expected !

Generally around the resort- some things need replacement/ maintenance of paintwork/ chairs/ tables/ sun loungers. Small amount of litter around site.
Gabi Beach furniture old and worn [particularly sun shades] also some decking needs maintenance to avoid trips/ injury
The reservations for A La Carte restaurants has poor system/organisation get ready for a long wait!
Also the A La Carte restaurants have a limited menu, & front of house staff try their best but clearly have not been trained. Atlantis has only one tasting menu and does not change. Aqua had no Penne pasta one evening. Also the “Indian” SAHEL restaurant has no idea of Indian cuisine. We went into Santa Maria for 'tasty/spicy' meals
Cats- many wandering around resort OK- [BUT sitting on chairs in reception is unacceptable]
However; we were very pleased with the wide use of plastic glasses around pool and walkways
Spices- food was plentiful and well presented- lots of fresh salads, typical International Buffet style- but rather bland as was most of the A La Carte restaurants
Spices Staff- well dressed/ helpful and tried to please- kept all tables clean/ re-stocked food platters
Pool activities seemed enthusiastically well organised and provided across the whole resort [music much too loud-maybe an age thing]

Assessment: This may be a 5 star hotel/ resort BUT it needs maintenance.

We are here now! Beautiful and clean. The staff so friendly and cannot do enough for you. Make you feel so welcome as soon as you enter. I want to say a big shout out to Gildo and his team at the Atlantis Restaurant for making my birthday dinner so special. Also Remy who we have seen in a number of different locations but always remembers you with a smile as though old friends.
The whole team at the hotel just want to make sure your happy and enjoying yourself and as the saying for the island goes NO STRESS. The singer last night, Mendes Silva, was absolutely superb as was the ‘dance team’ who followed them.
So pleased we came to this hotel.

My wife and I stayed at Melia Dunas between January 7 and January 21, and our overall view is that we have visited better all-inclusive hotels but also much worse.
First we got a room at the far end of the main house, even though at emailed to the hotel and asked for a room near the pool and restaurant because my wife has difficulty walking. But after talking to the reception we quickly got a new room on the second floor near the elevator at the reception.
More disappointed we were with the staff from Ving who did not want to help us with this. Instead, a Dane we named Carl tried to explain in an email that we got the type of room we booked and that it was not possible to change rooms! The attitude towards us as customers was reminiscent of that of "SunTrip"... But we have been traveling on similar trips for 25 years and are no Stig Helmer Olssons... So we solved it ourselves!
The new room was quite OK. About 40 square meters, which is larger than what many similar hotels offer. The rooms are only cleaned every other day, but for us it was OK. There is no soft drinks or beer in the fridge in the room, the only drink offered is bottled water.
The food was in the buffet no big shot but no direct disaster either. Some were not very well cooked: hard-fried chops, chewy meat, fish that smelled strange. Lots of fruit and greens though, but we lacked real juice without sugar and dark bread.
There are three restaurants that can be booked. Such restaurants are rarely very good at all-inclusive hotels, but here they were really bad: pizza that was burnt and hard, over-salted fish... At one of the restaurants, the pork tenderloin on the menu had been replaced by duck. The duck consisted only of sleaze, so we walked away without saying a word!
At the bar they were good at making coffee and rum&cola... The beer was also OK, but the other drinks were of no higher standard. No real bartenders. For example:
they use Sprite to mix mojito...
In conclusion, three stars is a reasonable judgement, certainly not five!

What can I actually say about this place - we are here now -
The food is horrendous absolutely nothing edible, can’t get near buffet anyway it’s like a bad football match - and all a la carte restaurants booked out they said. We managed to try Ranchos on first night - disgusting is all I can say - pools ok, facilities ok, shops over priced. I have tried to get sun lounger towels for past few days they never have any left so had to buy over priced little bath towels in shop. Because food is soooo bad we decided to book the level package as an extra as they said we would have priority booking for a la carte which was rubbish as we couldn’t - we went to the a la carte level restaurant for breakfast and were refused entry as we have our 8 year old granddaughter with us - we were not told we couldn’t take her in there for breakfast when they took €540 extra for this package so we had to go into town for breakfast as nowhere else to eat then - the Tui rep Courtney has been great she gave us our out of pocket expenses for breakfast and also helped us get a full refund for the level package but the hotel made us wait 3 days and 5-6 trips to reception to get it back!!!!!! Staying in 3 bed villa very shabby furniture, showers keep overflowing, phone doesn’t work, WiFi awful, towels stained, bedding not changed for 4 days up to now and we have 3 to go, staff not even interested in assisting so no point in complaining - I will be asking for a refund for most of this holiday which cost £8k when I return home as this is my last family holiday before moving abroad next year and I wanted to spend our last Christmas somewhere nice. To be honest it’s the worst hotel I’ve been to in my life and I have heard a lot of other guests say that here -we saved hard for this and I am absolutely appalled at the service, most of reception staff, food - never seen the pool or surrounding area being cleaned or hosed down I am full of cold sores which I never get obviously because of dirty glasses - pool areas not clean and tiles missing very dangerous for both adults and children - way too much more to write - avoid this place please

Arrived at 3pm check in took a while then was told room not ready come back in a hour went back at 4.30 room was ready but only given 1 key told come back tomorrow for another went back next day still no keys so just managed with the 1. Entered to room it was a family room so nice and spacious but not clean shoe marks all over the walls and dead insects stuck all over them bottom of bath stained. Blind in bedroom broken safe not working no chairs on patio no iron and ironing board went to reception to report this as phone in room not working, was told someone would come to resolve issues no one came reported next day no one came so gave up with that. Room was only cleaned 3 out of the 7 days towels taken away and not replaced water not left everyday. Al a carte restaurants virtually impossible to make a booking but after trying several times we managed to book in for 2 nights, buffet restaurant a joke massive ques for coffee machines toasters and food. Sometimes hard to find a table, clean plates bowls and cutlery was always running out. No soap for hand washing in a lot of the public toilets which was quite worrying as seen people in the buffet restaurant picking food up with fingers then putting it back down. Pool towels was a joke trying to get one of them. All staff looked totally miserable and disinterested. We booked melia dunas and our room was over the other side which I think was the old sol dunas but I think it is all one hotel now but feel cheated as prices for sol dunas when I booked were cheaper. It cost us alot of money as prices inflated for Christmas which I wouldn't of minded if the place wasn't so underwhelming. Grounds looked nice and gardeners were busy everyday looking after them. Seemed to be plenty of sun beds. Our room was next to the pool with excessively loud music blasting out from 10 am to 6pm. We have stayed in much better 3 star hotels. If you are prone to mosquito bites as I am be prepared I have around 60 bites, I had mosquito spray wrist band and plug in for room but still got attacked

Cape Verde is a destination that we did not know and the expectations with which we traveled were very low. We stayed at this hotel, although the reviews were not very favorable, we decided to make a short stay, in the hotel and in the country. It is a large establishment and at the time we visited it was full of families with children, it coincided that they were the white weeks of the North European families who were the ones that largely occupied the hotel these days.
The reception was friendly and agile. We took our room which, although it didn't have great views, was wide, clear and spacious. Comfortable bed with several kinds of pillows for all tastes, well-conditioned, very clean, impeccable. The Wi-Fi signal reception was strong, although at times when there were many people connected, the quality dropped a little. The bathroom is also clear and well laid out with a powerful shower with instant hot water. The hotel's common spaces are spacious and very busy. The layout of the hotel ends on a fairly airy white sand beach. The dining room deserves special mention, serving food in a buffet format, quite well stocked and maintained. Perhaps they should make an effort to increase the quality of some meals, which seem designed more for a barracks than for a hotel. At that point they have room for improvement. The same thing happens to theme restaurants where some dishes seem to be cooked wholesale.
Except for this point that could be improved, without a doubt, otherwise it closely follows the chain's policy, prioritizing the quality of services. It could be that adults traveling alone prefer to stay at the Melià Llana which is right next door and is 'adults only' where the atmosphere is calmer.

5-star resort that more looks like a 3-star hotel.
Good facilities, quite large, with several pools, with slides for children and babies. But pretty degraded pools. Beach in front good, calm and clean sea.

Very disorganized, we were 1.30h waiting to check in (with a small baby, hungry and sleepy), we had to walk to the room with luggage, baby cart and etc, which was still on the beach at 5/10min walk because they didn't have anyone to help us carry when the hotel had several golf cars in the facilities.

Cleaning pretty bad, almost every day we had to go complain to the reception, or because they had not reposted the water bottles, or because they had not gone to clean, changed the bath towels, reposted bath gel, etc.

Very weak restaurant (in terms of food) always the same foods and recipes, very poorly cooked, weak desserts (reused cakes for several days), various reused foods for several days (dried or badly spent meat and fish) (e.g. had almonds for breakfast, lunch and dinner, for 7 days). Very poorly organized buffet, there was no bottled water (we went with IT and if we wanted bottled water we had to pay). They made huge queues because they had few employees baking the food. Little variety of fruit and bread (only had banana 2x in a week. Dirty restaurant.

We went to an á la carte restaurant and the food was very bad, and we had to go complain more than once to get a reservation because they let people book for an entire week and then there are no reservations for all guests.

Summarizing resort very weak, do not advise and go there.

The rooms are very tired and are not cleaned properly. The laundry staff only come occasionally, and it is completely uncertain when they will arrive. Either 09, 13 or 17, or they don't come at all. Very annoying. The food is not to boast. Down on the aqua is not the noise in the dispenser what it says. They don't have proper cola or fanta, and ice cream is a lemon formash. You will get a room most likely with a lot of mosquitoes so bring mosquito spray and everything that is there, because you will get many swollen bits. The linen is dirty, the walls and the ceiling are dirty. Mugg on the shower... well, I can mention in fleng.
Would try to upgrade or choose another hotel for this was not worth $30,000 at all..
Very maste at the pools with screaming and singing in the microphones and staff disturbing because they want to talk to have you with on toys all the time..

Our huge room (TUI SUX1 - 2 Bedroom Suite) was cleaned daily and water and coffee refilled.

The buffet restaurant was extremely loud and the distances were long, so the food was usually cold. At lunchtime we usually used one of the other restaurants. The a la carte restaurants for the evening are highly recommended, delicious food and varied. Unfortunately, making reservations for these is a disaster (from Friday you can book the restaurants for the coming week and you should do so on time because otherwise everything is already fully booked.)

The beach is great and, thanks to the breakwaters, is mostly suitable for children.

Pools, especially in the neighboring Sol, are in need of renovation. Children's pool and aqua park are very nice and the children don't mind if a mosaic tile is missing. There were enough loungers available, even though many people had already reserved early in the morning. You could always find a nice lounger somewhere.

Very nice and large children's playground, great evening shows and a really great beach bar

I'm really perplexed by some of the reviews I've read considering Melia Dunas - I wonder if different bookings end up in different areas or something, such is the discrepancy between some of the reviews and my experience (and that of a few others seemingly). For what it's worth, I booked a flight and hotel package via Expedia.

Communication from both Expedia and Melia was excellent before and during our stay.

In terms of less than perfect aspects, I can sympathise with some of what is being reported. It didn't seem easy to book restaurant places, but a member of staff told us she'd see what she could do to accommodate and delivered, we had places every night bar one. The buffet can be busy at time - it's a very large complex - so yes you may have to wait for more glasses and plates to be re-stacked, etc, but we all found the food varied, tasty, and plentiful. The restaurants are definitely an added, and better experience. We had problems with one air conditioning unit constantly dripping which was a little annoying, but when we reported it the next day it was fixed while we were out. Mosquitos-wise, we did indeed see people riddled with bites - we had two bites between 4 of us in 5 days (and my wife normally always gets bitten...).

None of this detracted from the wonderful time we had.

On the plus side, I was impressed with having immediate access to all facilities 4 hours before check-in was opened (you get your bracelet straight away)...! The gardens were beautifully tended, the booking system for the tennis court (through the kids club) means that there are no surprises or discussions - you book and play as you wish. The many different bars, restaurants and pools provided a nice variety - Aqua Restaurant was a particular favourite with sleeping in teenagers who just went straight there for pizzas, pasta and whatever else. The sundowners by the beach were fun and much appreciated.

Regarding the local area, I'd just recommend getting out to Sal as soon as you can (taxi is €5 from the front of the hotel, loads of them hang out just outside the gate)) to explore and see what you'd like to do. There are loads of restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, etc...it really is lovely. Unsurprisingly, the excursions on offer through either the hotel or your reps are much more expensive than you can do independently. There are a lot of guys hanging around at the beach who will offer you everything you need - this is where we ended up booking our whole island tour with Alex Nice Tours (see separate review - excellent, and great value!). We didn't even have to pay a deposit for the excursion, so there was no fear that this was a rip-off.

Last thing - I only checked country arrivals procedures at the last minute - I was unable to pay the arrivals tax in advance (you stop being able to do so 5 days ahead of arrival I think), but it wasn't a problem, it just means you can't go through the automatic gates. At €30 per person I felt it was quite steep - I'm glad I was at least aware in advance...

If I don't return to Melia Dunas, it's not because of any problems with this trip, it's only because I can't wait to visit a different island in Cabo Verde!

Obrigado Melia Dunas!
