We stayed here, a group of 5 friends, Sept/Oct 2022. The hotel is very nice with a great location on the beach and a 40 minute walk to Santa Maria. We had 2 2-bedroom 2-bathroom rooms which were great, very spacious with a separate kitchen area and living room with TV and leather sofas. The issues we had were because the hotel had only just reopened after covid - so the hairdryer needed replacing as it was broken, the tvs didn't work, there was no tea n coffee in the room, no towel hut, not all restaurants and bars were open, nor was the spa. Only after we spoke to other guests did we find out that we could ask for access to the Melia Dunas because of this. So we did a lot of walking between the 2 on a dark stretch of beach but we made the best of it. The large swimming pool with swim-up bar is beautiful and we spend most time there, doing the aqua aerobics each day and zumba some days with Jack and Solange. They made our holiday. We also did a full island tour with a local taxi driver, can see all the key sites in less than a day. We also did some shopping in Santa Maria and stopped for coffee. Some nice shops and bars and cafes there. Not sure if I would come back as there is not a lot outside of the hotels. It looks like the hotel now is fully open, so maybe we just didn't see it at its best.

Hotel's Favorite
Prior to our visit, we had been to Melia Tortuga 3 times before - this was our 4th visit, and we have visited Cape Verde over 10 times in total. Throughout the pandemic the hotel was closed, but we kept in close contact with Vania (Guest experience) which gave us hope that we would be able to visit again. On arrival we jumped in a taxi (15 euro) and were greeted by Vania and her colleagues. The hotel is just as lovely as it was before the pandemic. A lot of the staff members from our previous visit were still working there and remembered us, which was so lovely. Many of them were not able to work through the pandemic, so are delighted to be back at the hotel. They all work tirelessly to make sure that your holiday is as perfect as it should be. Rooms: We had a 2 bed room which was adequate in size and had 2 shower rooms (one with a bath). I would say that the rooms are starting to look a little tired, but they were fine for us. The only concern I had was that there were a lot of mosquitos around, and you could hear them in the room at night. This is something we had not experienced before, so it may be because the hotel was dormant throughout the pandemic. Hopefully this will be rectified. I was badly bitten (not all from the room), so if you are susceptible to mosquito bites then please take precautions. In addition, there was a loud buzzing in one of the bedrooms, which was quite annoying. I think it was the air-con from the room next door? Again, this was something that we did not notice in our previous visits. Food: We ate in Spices (the buffet) for breakfast. It gets busy between 7:45am and 9:15am, so avoid this time if you want it to be quieter. This restaurant also serves lunch and dinner. Speciality restaurants: We ate at O´Grille every day for lunch. Mario is a great restaurant manager and Eilene is an absolute ray of sunshine. Thank you also to Ludgero who always had a smile on his face! There is no reservation required for lunch, but it does get very busy from 12:30pm to 2pm. You need reservations for O´Grille, Pasta Nostra and Aqua Nikkey in the evening. You can book these a few days in advance at the Late Bar. We ate at all of the restaurants and they were all exceptional. We must say that Peterson in Pasta Nostra was very attentive and remembered the little things about previous visits - an absolute credit to the hotel and someone who I would hire at the drop of a hat at home! Please note that if you are vegetarian, there is limited choice at O´Grille and Aqua Nikkey. If you are vegan then you will be extremely limited. I am a pescatarian, but often eat the vegetarian / vegan options, which is why I highlight this. I can't comment on the Spices buffet, but if you are a vegan then you may want to enquire about this before booking. (Thank you to Mario for always ensuring there was something for me to eat when we had booked for the evening!) The only other thing to note is that there are not many options for snacks in-between meal services which I think could be improved on. O´Grille had some bread, fruit and cold cheese / ham in between lunch and dinner, but that was about it. It didn't really bother us, but it may be important for others. Drinks: We did not upgrade to premium drinks, but the options were absolutely fine for us. Most drinks you would expect were available, including Cava and cocktails. The only thing I would say is the plastic cups look quite worn, so I always preferred drinking from a glass when we were sat in the bar. Pools & Beach: We spent every day at the beach which was very quiet. Every time we have visited this hotel there has never been any issue with getting sunbeds on the beach. There were lots of free beds at the pool whenever we walked past. Trips: We didn't go on any trips as we have done most of them previously. However, I would absolutely advocate booking with the locals on the beach. They are very knowledgeable and friendly. My husband is an avid kite-surfer, so we spent many days at Kite Beach. Mitu & Djo´s kitesurfing school is one of the best and there are good facilities on the beach (a bar, restaurant & toilets). We highly recommend this school. From the hotel you can walk via the beach into Sal. It will take you about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. However, there is a free shuttle bus that runs from the hotel in the morning and back in the afternoon if you wanted to use this instead. A taxi from Sal is about 4 euro each way. Another great spot is Ponta Preta which is about 20 / 30 min walk from the hotel. If the wind and waves are good then you will often see people kitesurfing and surfing, which is fantastic to see. There are also 2 beach bars that you can stop at and have a drink or something to eat. Other considerations: The hotel have decided to try and reduce their use of plastic, which is a great thing. However, this means that thy do not hand out bottles of water. You can get glasses of water from the bar, but if you drink a lot of water (advisable!) then I would recommend taking a refillable bottle, and the bars will happily refill this for you too. There are reusable bottles for sale in the hotel shop and Sal, but they are quite expensive (20 euro plus for a small bottle). Bottled water to buy is about £1 per litre. Prior to our visit, we saw that the local charities were asking for donations for the local children and the local animal charity, so we took over some items for them. If you need all of your luggage weight but still want to support the local charities, then you can just get in contact with them prior to your departure then they can organise for you to have additional luggage (for free). They are great causes, so please consider them. Things that could be improved: The Wi-Fi is not very reliable, which is OK if you want to disconnect, but it's not ideal for the majority of people. The best (sometimes only) place to get Wi-Fi is on at the beach bar or in the lobby. Once again, we must say THANK YOU to Vania (Guest relations) and all of the wonderful staff (especially those mentioned in our review). We would appreciate if you could provide some recognition to all of them. We are already planning our next visit back! Thank you again.

Our first trip to Cape Verde Islands & this did not disappoint, we will definitely be coming back. Hotel has an ideal location, right on the beach & about 2-3 km from the main town of Santa Maria. The hotel staff are very friendly & helpful, there are about 5 bars within the complex & 3 themed restaurants Grill Bar, Italian & Japanese as well as the main buffet )the themed restaurants have to be booked). Vegetarian food is good, but if you are vegan you will struggle. Antonio in the restaurant is the most friendly & helpful person of the staff we have interacted with the most.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the MELIA TORTUGA. The apartment was clean and comfortable. The main restaurant was staffed by excellent chefs supported by a friendly and helpful waiting team. The restaurant is overseen by a delightful, cheerful manager called Antonio who welcomes you with a smile and is ever supportive of any customer requests.

Had a great stay at the Melia Tortuga Beach Resort and Spa. Met up with the lovely Antonio who greeted us each day with such a friendly smile and daily banter nothing was too much trouble for him. He also assisted when we had a few problems with our room i.e. no hot water, electric and air conditioning and ensured this was sorted promptly even though he is based in the restaurant he took the time to ensure we were looked after - such a star and a credit to the hotel!

I spent two weeks here with my brother and sister in law. The company was great but that was where it ended. When we arrived, the suite was set up for two rather than three with not enough towels, two chairs on the balcony, air con in double bedroom not working. When issues were raised at reception, they were addressed quickly but unfortunately the air con could not be fixed. Having read the reviews, I wondered who the infamous Antonio was as he has had many mentions. I discovered that this is because he hassles you to give him reviews. We ended up trying to hide from him and booked a private tour with a local guy who was recommended to us. He was excellent. I am glad we did not go on the open back trucks as you go through some windy desert type areas. The food in Spices was awful and the grill was barely any better. We renamed spices “ the recycling centre” We had poor service in the Japanese along with a wrong order. This also happened in the grill ( which had a disgusting smell like drains). The Italian was excellent. My brother and I both suffered from really bad upset stomachs on our last night. TIPS - Take an insulated water bottle so you can fill up with cold water at the gym, the Italian or spices. We didn’t drink alcohol in the day but filled a plastic bottle with wine to have on our balcony in the evening. Take a travel washing line as there is nowhere to hang wet swimwear. My bathroom had no toilet brush, toothbrush holder or mug. There is no full length mirror ( use the patio doors). Some of the staff were lovely and some were not so great. I get the impression that staff are trained by other staff. Consequently they learn their errors. Would I go back? In a word …. NO. I try not to go back to the same place twice but I would choose a different hotel with better food. I appreciate that we have just come out of a pandemic and money is tight but I would rather go for a shorter time to a better hotel.

The worse holiday I have ever had!!!!!I had food poisoning the last night, was up from 2am in and out of the bathroom, fainted, bruised my back in the fall, I was lucky I didn’t hit my head or break any bones. Had to fly home that morning feeling so ill. When we arrived we wanted to book the restaurants, was told they were fully booked but the buffet was open and we didn’t have to book to go in there. My friend went to see someone, she told them to move us to another hotel because we didn’t want to go into the buffet for breakfast, lunch and evening meal. They did get us in 3 restaurants. We went into the Japanese the first night, then it was closed for the rest of our stay. We went to the Italian twice, then it closed. We went to the grill 3 times, one was booked for us the other 2 times we just walked in, they did accept us. The reason we walked in there was because the buffet was awfully, it’s the worse buffet I have ever seen, there wasn’t any tomatoes or cucumber to make a salad, we had the same selection of food for lunch time and evening. There was an egg station for breakfast, one person making the omelettes was good, 2 they were trying to train, the omelettes they did was paper thin. The toaster is useless kept going off, the staff did try to help, they couldn’t do it, it took at least 5-6 minutes to do a slice of toast, it was slightly toasted and as hard as a brick. Apart from all that the staff were lovely and couldn’t be more helpful, they very friendly and polite. When we asked them why the restaurants were closed they said it’s because we aren’t very busy, I don’t know how it would work if it was busy when we were told the restaurants were fully booked the day we arrived and they didn’t have many people staying at the hotel. They umbrellas didn’t shade you the sun comes straight through them, didn’t protect you at all, and there isn’t enough windbreakers on the beach.

We booked a suite expecting superior standard but the room required a total revamp. It was so outdated. The hotel advertises 4 restaurants but only one is open 7 days a week. The other 3 are only open on certain nights when you have to book and be lucky to get in. The food in the main restaurant (Spices) is very average and a bit of a worry when you see a microwave and guests heating their food in it before eating! The entertainment is the worst I have ever experienced and some of the staff are so unfriendly. I will not be returning!
