Hotel Riu Karamboa is frequently celebrated for its serene beachfront location, although its remoteness may limit nearby activities. The service is widely commended for its friendliness and efficiency, and while the rooms are clean with modern amenities, some guests mention size inconsistencies and maintenance issues. Despite some visitors feeling that the hotel's value falls short of its 5-star rating, the amenities, including diverse dining options and well-maintained pools, earn rave reviews. The atmosphere is lively, yet some find it overly noisy. Cleanliness across the hotel is generally praised, with occasional minor issues noted.

First of all - wow! What a hotel. First visit to Cape Verde and we are impressed.

On arrival the palatial look of the hotel, the decor and the grounds are truly stunning.

We arrived and had to wait a couple of hours for our room to be ready so headed off for a look around.

The staff are what make this hotel. From the pool toilet cleaners to the gardeners and the chefs (and everyone else). Always smiling, helpful and cannot do enough for you. Try and give them a tip when you can.

We asked for a quieter room and got a block furthest away from the reception which meant a 5-10 minute walk to get to most things. Room was very peaceful during the night. I think most rooms have a sea view of some sorts.

The room is great, although not very private if you were with a friend or family member. It’s very open and the only privacy is in the toilet cubicle. The shower cubicle has a frosted door on it and the sinks are open to the room. The bed was very comfortable. Pillows not so good but there are extra in the wardrobe.
Optics in the room are brandy, gin, whiskey and white rum. Soft drinks and water in the fridge and tea / coffee making facilities.
Love the towel animals the cleaning ladies make. Leave them a little tip!
The balcony chairs are grimy and need cleaning or replacing (see pics).

Corridors are noisy after around 8.30 so if you want a lie in, bring ear plugs. Other guests slamming doors, when they close quietly if your careful and maids shouting to each other or maybe having general conversation, but it echoes. Make sure you put your do not disturb sign on the door if you want a lie in. Cleaning lady turned up at 8.40am one morning. And if your having an afternoon nap, make sure you put your do not disturb sign on then. The mini bar guy likes to come and knock your door and ask if everything is ok with the minibar. Happened to us at 5.30pm one day.

You get a pool towel each included which you get a card for and hand in to get a towel.

The beaches - wow! Have a walk in either direction. It’s a bit hard going in the sand but very scenic and some of the views and the sand would make you think you were in the Caribbean. The sea is pretty much always rough and it’s impressive to watch the waves from the beach when it’s windy.

In the winter months there is more chance of sand storms. Expect delays. We were fortunate or unfortunate enough! to only be delayed by 2.5 hours. Some guests had to stay for an extra 3 days as the planes couldn’t land/take off. So bear in mind if you have commitments you must get home for. The sand did affect my chest and I still have a chesty cough nearly a week later. But the sun still shone though the dust/sand! The airport is quite small and the volume of passengers that Tui decided to push through that small airport, because of 3 days of no flights with the sandstorms, was disgusting. Altogether, in various queues, we spent 2.5 hours standing up. They ran out of bottled water on the return flight home as well. Riu made the holiday and Tui spoilt it at the end.

Didn’t use the spa or gym so can’t comment. The activities looked good as a spectator and were plentiful but again, didn’t participate.

Everywhere is so clean, thanks to the staff they are constantly cleaning and tidying up.

Bars are everywhere but at the daytime places you only get plastic glasses which are okayish. Don’t just go by the drinks on the bar menu, they will make any cocktail you ask for. Leave a tip.

Food: We are not overly fussy and found the food to very good.
Breakfast: vast variety of fruit, yoghurts, coffee, juices, French toasts, croissants, eggs, bacon, omelettes, smoked salmon. Everything you can think of.
Late breakfast at Las Dunas from 10.30am if you miss normal breakfast. With a good selection of eggs meats and cheeses.
Pool bar snacks: fries, pork belly, burgers, chicken drumsticks, chorizo sausages and salad from 10am-5pm.
Lunch at Las Dunas and main buffet restaurant.
All restaurants have so much choice and so much food always available.
Three speciality restaurants: Italian, which is a buffet help yourself, Kazumi which is an oriental buffet. Food amazing but way too hot in there. They need to turn the aircon on. Other guests we spoke to on different nights had the same issue in Kazumi.
Kuinarium: best restaurant by far with table service and menu choice.

We always managed to find a sunbed, they are plentiful. Beautiful pool areas and lots of swimming space. I will say though, that the two swim up bars have a strange stale smell to the pools. Not sure if people are peeing in there as mentioned on other reviews?

Flies: yes there are lots of them about. Especially around outdoor bars and food areas. Saw a lot of people take hot food from the pool bars and leave the glass door open, giving a free for all for the flies. Honestly. If some people had brains…

Nighttime entertainment:

We only went for a couple of evenings and the shows were good. You can see the staff rehearsing during the day. LOVED the white party, it was fabulous.

Please save some of your leftovers for the beach doggies. They are friendly

Tips:

Download the Riu app before you go. You can ask for minibar items, pillows, room maintenance and pretty much everything on there once you are connected to their WiFi.

Water is given in small glasses at the pool bar. If you drink lots you can order large bottles to your room on the app and fill them up in the various restaurants. Just put in the notes on the app how many you want when you request.

Speciality restaurant bookings are released for up to 3 days at midnight each day if your still awake. Otherwise you will struggle to get booked in.

Would definitely return! Thank you Riu and your staff ❤️

The main issue for me was Smoking, rather than having smoking areas the hotel has a small number of non-smoking areas very 1980's. Annoying when eating, as a majority of the outside areas are spoiled by smokers this also true of the pool area, the other bad point is the lack of toilets.
Rooms are comfortable with tea and coffee making facilities, a refrigerator is also supplied as is a safe both are free of charge. Fresh bottled water is supplied each day the only thing missing is milk, our room was cleaned every day, we returned to our room each evening to find a decoration of some kind left for us, this was highlighted on my wife’s birthday, please see the picture.
This is without any doubt a very good hotel food is excellent with something for everybody, the main restaurant in our opinion is the best as we found both the African and Asian restaurants offered nothing really different to the main restaurant buffet style, the one night we did book the Asian restaurant the food was cold lacking any real flavour.
Outside of the hotel there is very little to do, trips are expensive for what is offered.
We enjoyed our 11 night stay we shall return at some time in the not too distant future, the bad points are outweighed by the good, the staff do everything they can do to make your holiday enjoyable, the entertainment staff are exceptional and go the extra mile to keep you entertained and happy throughout your stay.

It was a special birthday treat for my wife who had stipulated that the venue be hot sunny with a pool and a convenient bar. We arrived the day before her Birthday on a convenient flight (TUI) from Gatwick direct to Boa Vista. Hotel is 3 minutes from the airport but there is little if any flight noise, currently due to size of airport (No night flights).
On arriving at he hotel you are provided with hand cleanser and a glass of Champagne. After registration WiFi log in details etc and room key luggage is portered to your room. Room was clean and air conditioned (cleaned daily) Furniture was comfortable as was the bed. Satellite Digital Tv, excellent Shower with limitless hot water and Fridge etc.
The hotel restaurants are fantastic. 3 specialist Restaurants (Sea Food, Asian and African) which you have to pre book. The Santiago (Main Restaurant) provides a buffet style self service menu that caters for all tastes and dietary requirements. This is excellent as are the staff. The Las Dunas Restaurant which is poolside is also excellent and provides buffet meals throughout the day and then becomes the "African Specialist Restaurant" in the evening. Excellent food and very helpful and friendly staff.
The staff throughout the many bars and restaurants really enjoy their environment which enables guests to really enjoy the ambiance and culture of the Island. The in house entertainment is also varied and excellent. The Pools and Beach areas are scrupulously clean and inviting with more than plenty of sun beds available with shading from the very hot sun. We were on the resort for 14 days from 29th February with daily temperatures in the low to mid 30's "C"
Between TUI and the Hotel Management on the day of my wife's birthday our room was dressed by the maid and a bottle of champagne and glasses were left for us to enjoy. We booked the "Sea Food" Restaurant for dinner where too the staff dressed our table and lit candles and again provided champagne. Overall the Hotel is an excellent experience Fun Friendly and spectacular with regards to the Gardens and Facilities which are maintained to an extremely high standard. We shall be returning as the 6 hour flight from London for guaranteed Winter Sun and excellent service and facilities really is a no brainer we loved it.

Hotel was quite dated but staff were on the whole extremely polite.

Rooms are on 3 floors, we were on the ground which was convenient and a shot distance to main reception, restaurants and beach.

Pool had the usual idiots who go down at the crack of dawn to put towels on sun beds despite the fact that there was a clear sign saying no access until 09:00 am and there were more than enough for everyone.

There was a huge selection of food available all day long. Meats, pasta, pizzas, burgers, salads, cheese boards, fish, breads, soup and wine/beer on tap along with fruit juices, teas, coffees and cold water. The downside was that it was pretty much the same stuff every day.

There were 2 restaurants, African and Chinese that you had r=to book in advance but to be honest you had a better selection of the same stuff in the main restaurant.

Beach was clean and lifeguards there throughout the day as the current was strong on most days.

Shows were a bit hit and miss but on the whole okay.

Drinks available were local spirits and syrupy type mixers no actual brands available even to purchase.

Make sure that you read the small print on your towel card as you have to return it at the end of your stay.

Rooms were fine and TV actually had a really good reception.

Bathroom led from the bedroom with no door so just a shower curtain for any privacy that you might want but the power of the shower was very good. There was also a fridge in the room and plenty of coffee and assortment of teas topped up daily with 2 large bottles of water.

There is also a Wellness Centre where you can have a massage (payable) and a gym with jacuzzi and sauna. It was hard to find without asking.

I would recommend this as a holiday to relax but don't expect luxury.

Brilliant value for money, Brilliant staff Brilliant staff. Bars are great and they do not water down drinks you do by putting ice in it. Saw the staff breaking the seals on the bottles It’s 37.5% not 40%.

Plenty of choice at meals but one bit of advice go at least one hour of the opening times to miss the scrum. You would think there was a shortage of food and as for the rude old people of all nationalities. I now know where the sprouts not used in a December go!
Fresh cooking done in front of you each day and something to suit all dietary requirements. Could get boring if there for two weeks, the three other restaurants are great. Chefs if you wear disposable gloves don,t wash your hands with them own, the proper way is change them.

The sun beds are mixed standards and there are plenty both by the pool and the great beach. The big pool is warmer in the afternoon. Good children’s pool but not used much. Good bar and staff. Nice pool towels and change when you want.

The rooms are dated but clean towels could do with being bigger and they do folds each day of the towels we ended up with ten towels. Dated furniture and tiles in shower need regrouting. Only soap provided. Very few rooms have a ocean view and yes the rooms need airing as can smell damp. We asked for extra pillows and got them.

The only animals we saw were the cats who are not a nuisance did not see anything crawling. Plenty of space even for so many rooms and entertainment is average. Great place for winter sun. If you have to pay for transfers get a taxi. No sign of ashtrays full of change looking for tips, the only tip required is for the bellboy. Be polite to the staff and they get used to you and serve you quickly.

Just returned from our 14 night stay and chose this place based on all the info and reviews outlining the quietness of the island and that there isn't much to do outside the resort. It did exactly what it said on the tin.
The best things for us were the beach front location and beautiful views, the amazing buffet food, clean and comfortable rooms, beautifully kept gardens and walkways and the very short (4 minutes) transfer time from the airport.
The food really was delicious with lots of choice which varies from day to day. Fresh fish and prawns, meats, poultry and stews, many kinds of vegetables, rice, potato dishes, vegetarian choices, impressive salads (the Russian one is delicious), cheeses (beautifully presented), cold meats, lovely fresh fruits, proper pizzas, hand made burgers, pasta dishes, gorgeous little cakes of all kinds, pancakes, waffles, ice-creams, a chocolate fountain, daily specials of different kinds both sweet and savoury and many more things besides. Wines, beer and soft and fizzy drinks are all on tap 24/7.
Our room was 2 large singles (pushed together); Power shower, clean towels, mini fridge with bottled water daily, kettle with coffee, teas, etc, sun terrace and good tv.
The pool is cold but refreshing, sunloungers plentiful but the best locations grabbed very early, beach beautiful but sea rough so didn't swim or snorkel unfortunately.
Evening entertainment is fine, drinks varied and fully stocked, all in all a lovely, quiet island and good resort

Stunning Hotel with a definite wow factor.
Entertainment , Bars , shops, reception, & Spa are all upper level via stairs only. No lifts in this Hotel so maybe a struggle if you have a disability. All Restuarants on lower level.
We couldn't fault this Hotel it is wonderful. The staff are excellent & present thereselves with a happy smile & will always oblige.
The pool area is lovely as is the Beach. It is windy but you need it to cool you down from hot sun.
The Bar staff everywhere were happy & smiling especially the pool bar staff where they would place bottles on their heads & do a dance / singing routine.
Beach towels are supplied but make sure you keep your ticket on checking out otherwise you will be charged 10€. Also the shop providing Holiday extras is very pricey. Our room 0193 was lovely & spacious with a bath & shower. Patio not in a very sunny position but nice. Overall I would recommend this Hotel.

We arrived home from the Karamboa on Saturday 21 March after a 14 days holiday in Cape Verde. We were given a very good room with a sea view and balcony. It was decorated in an African style with dark wicker furniture and pictures. We were provided with all the usual slow hairdryer, soap and body wash in the shower, soap, tea/coffee making facilities and a safe. We were stocked up daily with plenty of water in the fridge by the maid service. Even at the end of the holiday which became difficult we were still provided with everything we needed. The food in the buffet was very good, plenty of choice and variety, the 3 restaurants were also very good our favourite being the Cape Verdian. We did not go to the entertainment or really sit in the bar areas as non smokers because they have large smokings areas - also around the pool. The gardens around the hotel are lovely and very well kept. At the end of the holiday it became very difficult due to the Coronavirus , the hotel did the best it could in very very difficult circumstances and for that we are very grateful.

We had a wonderful family holiday here, the staff were all so attentive and made a real effort to please. One of our party had a birthday and a table for thirteen was laid for us with candles and fizz plus a birthday cake. They really went the extra mile to make our holiday very enjoyable.

Everything is spotlessly clean, a lot of attention is made over this. I noted that surface areas such as the popular ice cream serving area were regularly cleaned throughout the day.

The beach and sea are wonderful. The children spotted two turtles swimming in the surf on two successive days, and our fellow guests were very good in supporting the staff and keeping the area free of litter. Always lots to do. Plenty of fitness classes. The children enjoyed the painting room and produced lots of lovely paintings for us.

The choice and quality of the food was exceptional, something for everyone including vegans and vegetarians. The pancakes and waffles at breakfast were particularly enjoyed by our children!

We would highly recommend Hotel Karamboa.

My partner and I have just returned from ten days over New Year. I cannot fault the hotel. The food was varied and excellent. The African restaurant is a definite must, we actually applauded the staff our meal was so delicious. The New Year’s party was stunning from the food to the party to the happy smiling staff. We visited the spa for aromatherapy, massages, body treatment and a facial and again the standards of service were exceptional. The bar staff on the beach were particularly fab, every sunset drink we had there felt like we were at a party where everyone was having a good time and there were plenty of staff on hand to make sure we didn’t wait. In the main restaurant I watched with fascination whilst the staff replaced tablecloths, reset tables to the most unbelievable high standard of precision, including aligning tables on the tiled floor perfectly. Nothing was too much trouble and without exception every staff member was polite but smiling. If I had to complain about anything I would say the rooms were immaculate and cleaned perfectly every day but were simple and the bed mattress firm and a bit lumpy with rather flat pillows. There were limited low quality toiletries and the powdered milk sachets for in room coffee was not good. Little details but otherwise a perfect getaway.
