The volunteers seem to be running the place into the ground. I was very disappointed in my stay. The place is beautiful, but the management should look into their workers. No one seemed to know what was going on. Stewart was very rude. Drunk locals came into our dorm room a number of times being disrespectful and obnoxiously loud. Finally... More

We are so embarrassed by this review, and so very sorry that you had such a bad experience. Having looked into the bookings, if we are not mistaken, your bad experience happened on a recent weekend night, and that you slept in the dormitory that is reserved for volunteers. This was a mistake made by a new receptionist, and as... More

Aaahhh... When you find yourself in Port St John's make sure you stay with these champions. The staff are amazing and friendly. The hostel is beautifully situated near the beach. It's a little mission to get in to town if you don't have your own car. The room was perfect and the food amazing. Thank you Amapondo Team for the... More

Vibe is excellent. Friendly staff. Lots of people gathering around a bonfire and enjoying the loud music and lots of booze. The cottage was basic....clean(ish)...and exactly what you pay for. Unfortunately one big negative: the bed is WAY past its sell-by date. And its not just me. Met a couple who stayed there the same night and their backs were... More

Seriously impressed with this place. The rooms are spacious with solid, comfy beds, the kitchen is one of the best-equipped i've seen in a hostel, the bar area is very cool with pool, table tennis etc, the shower rooms are great and the place is just generally well looked after. Best thing; the people - staff and volunteers are really... More

Amazing atmosphere, great nature, friendly - this is the Transkei or Wild Coast. This backpacker is a gem if you want to relax and chill out for a few days. It has an amazing bar (yes, with three donkeys), great views, freindly staff, dogs and cats...it was hard to leave! I will be back!

Thanks for the review. So glad you had a great time and that you enjoyed Amapondo. So you met our crazy donkeys!? They don't come visit every day, but certainly on most days they do. They usually come to the bar for a carrot, but we also feed them down in their stable every day. Donkilizwe, the Alpha Female, has... More

Travellers to this rural coast in South Africa can be intimidated by the lack of infrastructure, but just breathe and immerse yourself in the simplicity of this area. Amapondo backpackers is well located very near 2nd beach. The facilities are adequate and if you can book one of the cottages, delightful. Owners are caring of guests, their staff and the... More

This is a backpackers, and it is the wild coast. If you expect luxury you will be very disappointed. Come expecting a Backpackers on the wild coast, sn you'll be impressed! We stayed in the Shiva cottage and it was wonderful, and the view, amazing. The bar area at night also has a wonderful atmosphere. They do serve food, although... More

Amapondo, totally at one with its surroundings. From the amazing location, to the African themed rooms, cottages set high on the hill overlooking Second Beach and the well run Pondolicious Restaurant, this place has it all. Stayed 3 nights and had to come back for another 3 nights. This place is very special indeed! Port St John's unfortunatly doesn't get the attention it deserves. Everybody "has to go" to the legendary Coffee Bay... That's what you hear from Cape Town to Durban, and alas, this place falls by the way side, sadly. The feeling I get... More

Wow, thanks for the review. So glad you had a great time and that you enjoyed Amapondo. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Amapondo is Ama-azing. Amapondo is nestled on a hill on the verge of a tropical rain forest and only 2 minutes walk from a beautiful beach. Head down to sunbathe or plunge in the clear warm waters of the deep rock pools nearby. The African-themed rooms and deluxe private self-catering cottages all have their own unique design and style. The quirkily designed cottages have incredible views, are really comfortable and come at a price that you'll find hard to match. Turtle Cove has one of the best views on the Wild Coast from its upstairs bubble bath, whilst Crystal House, with its glass frontage, offers classic panoramic ocean views. Whether you want a quiet, relaxing break in your own piece of paradise, a base from which you can explore the natural beauty of the area, an adventure on one of their many tours, close interactions with locals, genuine cultural experiences, yoga lessons, a deep tissue massage, or a thumping all-out party at their buzzy bar, you'll find it at Amapondo. ... more   less
