We loved this hotel, its setting and people, plus the ethics of the HBD group as a whole. However, a few reservations about the service in the restaurant which although always friendly and attentive was often lacking in the 'service' aspect. We often waited ages for certain parts of a meal, like an item at breakfast, coffee refills or drinks were ordered but then forgotten. We were told at one breakfast that there was no more pineapple (presumably as the platter on the table was empty). We had to smile, knowing how prolifically they grow here and having seen an open storeroom with dozens of them! It took a more senior member of staff to swiftly resolve the situation. The room, in the beautifully restored adjacent house, was lovely with large balcony overlooking the garden. Sadly there is no pool here, badly missed due to the hot & very humid climate. We could have had transport back to Bom Bom to use their pool & beach but it was very disappointing not to be able to access Praia Sundy hotel due to being out of bounds as foreign royals were holidaying there. We really approve of the work being done environmentally, culturally, financially to help the local community of very friendly people. Keep up the good work HBD.

The whole principle behind the HBD group of hotels is conservation and education. What a fabulous experience they provide. Top class accommodation, exquisite food from locally sourced ingredients ...all served by local people who live nearby in their traditional villages. I could write an essay but no need - come and try it and make a difference

Roça Sundy is on the northwest corner of Príncipe. 7 kilometres from Santo Antonio and about 1 kilometre thru the forest to the beach front. This hotel is based in a colonial cocoa farm with beautiful buildings. A few of them have been restored and turned in to a high-class hotel. Lovely view over the ocean. Room was big and nice. Bed comfortable. Free and fast Wi-Fi. Friendly staff. Breakfast and dinner were included in our booking. Very good quality. Good service and a nice bar. Plenty of items on the menu/drinks list where always missing in the bar thou. There is no pool or beach at the hotel. But Roça Sundy is part of a chain with 3 other resort, and you are free to use the facilities at those hotels as well. Very nice to be able to spend some time at the beach or a pool. Hotel offers free transfer a few times per day to other resorts. Expensive, but probably the best stay at Príncipe. Only downside was the smell from mold in the room.

“The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness “ (John Muir) The perfect introduction to the Island of Príncipe, neither prose nor poetry is enough to describe such a wonder. We stayed at Roça Sundy, which is a beautiful charming hotel, but it's much more than that. Staying at Sundy is just an excuse to immerse yourself in the tropical jungle and walk along the old cocoa trail that goes down to the beach, understand the importance of such a culture on the island and taste the products from their chocolate factory, live each day of your stay at the rhythm of their community, be moved by the projects already implemented and even more by the effort and commitment to so much that still has to be done. Staying at Sundy is also an opportunity to see the making of the delicious small breads that are served at meals, from the kneading to the wood oven and to appreciate the respect for local products and the traditional way of cooking, at each dinner. And finally, what clearly delights the Roça Sundy is its team: young, efficient and very, very friendly. To all our thanks, with a special reference to the tireless Filipa and Paco - respectively Head of Activities and Hotel Director - for being such wonderful hosts but above all for the passion with which they represent and transmit the values of Sundy. We stayed here for a couple of nights (between Bom Bom and Sundy Praia) and it was a lovely contrast to the beach resorts, staying in a colonial mansion house that's been restored and converted into a boutique hotel. You can really feel the history in the atmosphere here, and wandering around the plantation gives a real insight into what life used to be like here. Food here is really interesting, so many flavours and fruits/veg that we'd never come across before, so it's a great place if you want to try something new and different. We loved our room - one of the 4 poster suites on the ground floor of the main house, and amazing bathroom! I probably wouldn't stay here the whole time, but it works really well when combined with either Bom Bom or Sundy Praia (which is just down the hill), or both! A great base from which to explore the island.
