My husband and I just arrived home after a weekend at the Mirror Lake Inn celebrating our 20th Anniversary. It was absolutely amazing! The staff went above and beyond to make us feel special from the moment we checked in until we walked out the door after checkout! We received a room upgrade, champagne and a delicious cheese plate before our dinner at The View. I can’t say enough about the staff! Every single person we can in contact with was pleasant, cheerful and welcoming. This was our first time visiting and will definitely be back!!

Hotel's Favorite
One of the best managed and run hotels in the world... and a complete Lake Placid Gem. The Mirror Lake Inn is worth every penny and some of the most spectacular views in the world can be enjoyed from the many rooms and suites in this hotel. We stay at this hotel frequently and actually have a small family reunion with four rooms checking in again this weekend. The staff are receptive, attentive to detail, phenomenal with children and the facilities are beyond what you could hope for. There's a beautiful outdoor pool, indoor pool with sauna, giant whirlpool and waterfall features and a world-class spa. The more casual Cottage Restaurant and The View present the best dining options in Lake Placid to the point where we do not like leaving the property. The beach area with complimentary boat rentals for guests further sweeten the deal. The hospitality here is world-class. And for any guests who complain about the "rustic" rooms..... they are luxurious and match the vibe of this quaint historic property. The modern hotel rooms you'd fine in a sky-scraper Manhattan hotel would ruin the ambiance here. Everything is beautifully maintained. I'm extra thankful this SLH property has a partnership with World of Hyatt. As a Lifetime Globalist with Hyatt, this is how I first discovered the Mirror Lake Inn and our family can't get enough! Thank you!! (Matt G.)

Stayed at the Inn for our Anniversary and could not have been happier with the experience. The property is stunning both for its location location and its historical past. We arrived to find that we had been upgraded to front and center with the most breathtaking view, we are most appreciative. This place is class.

This was our second visit to Mirror Lake Inn - our first more than 20 years ago. We lived overseas for 26 years in 7 different countries and cultures and continue to travel extensively since retiring. We make a point of leaving fair and constructive reviews after our hotel stays. The incomparable position of the hotel on the lake and the beautifully maintained gardens cannot be faulted, however, very sadly we have checked out of the hotel a day earlier than planned due to our disappointing visit this week. Our Mountain View room was spacious for which we were grateful, as we were travelling with a dog which the hotel required was crated when we were absent from the room, and as dogs are not allowed even in the Outside seating area of The Cottage, this was frequent. The beds in the room were very comfortable, but the decor is tired and dated. There was no provision of a kettle or tea/coffee making facilities, and the mini bar refrigerator was empty, without even bottled water being supplied. This is entirely atypical of SLH hotels, and was a huge down side for us as we would have liked to be able to spend more relaxation time in the room with our dog instead of having to crate it and leave the room for refreshments. We noted the provision of a coffee stand next to The View restaurant, but as this was a long corridor’s walk, and a change of building, this was not a feasible option for a quick morning or afternoon cup of tea in our room! The corridor through the Mountain View building is dark, poorly illuminated. The room rate for that room in terms of facilities and decor does not represent good value for money. The one redeeming feature was the excellent clean provided by the room staff on May 10th, which was exceptional, showing real care and attention to detail. Thank you to the lady concerned! I see the earlier defensive comments from the general manager about the constant refurbishment of furnishings, and agree that the carpets and furnishings are clearly well maintained, but the entire decor in the hotel is dark, austere and unwelcoming, being in urgent need of updating and refreshment, whilst still perfectly feasibly maintaining the traditional Adirondack style that the hotel strives to demonstrate. All areas are screaming out for fresh eyes to inject some light and style into the decor and bring it into the 21st century. Check in on arrival was efficiently conducted but when my husband later phoned The View restaurant to reserve a table for dinner he supplied our name and room number but was then asked for his cell phone number (eventually successfully communicated). However, he was then asked for his email address, when he was then asked for his credit card number (the hotel had already received our deposit and an imprint of our credit card); my husband lost patience and terminated the conversation. We ate out that evening. Why on earth it was necessary for this amount of information to be demanded was beyond both of us, when the information was already on the hotel system. The following day we were told that the ‘View’ operates on a different sytem! Approx 20 feet away from reception. The property accepts dogs for a surcharge which is fair enough. But they are not permitted anywhere in the grounds, so to sit by the lake is impossible. The lack of acceptance of dogs in the grounds was reflective of the general philosophy of the hotel - instructions everywhere about what you can’t do!. On the positive side, the Cottage restaurant was very pleasant, staff helpful and the food good. As for ‘The View’, we never got to experience it; even for breakfast where only a full buffet at circa $30 each was on offer and no a la carte.

Dear “Smersh”, Thank you for having chosen the Mirror Lake Inn again after more than 20 years. I am glad to hear that you appreciated our location offering incredible views of both the lake and mountains, the beautifully maintained grounds and gardens, spacious accommodations, the “exceptional” level of cleanliness provided by our housekeeping department and your dining experience at The Cottage restaurant. All of our staff take great pride in the level of service and the overall experience that we provide to our guests. With so many positives, we were surprised that you opted to depart early feeling disappointed. Please know that while we do provide complimentary coffee and tea 24 hours a day in the lobby, we would have been happy to provide you with a coffee maker for your room. We wish you had let us know and we would have had it sent right up for you. We always welcome constructive feedback from our guests. In fact, we encourage it. This feedback is invaluable to us as part of our constant effort to improve the guest experience. That said, I must admit that I was surprised, and a bit baffled by some of your comments/frustrations. First, we go to great lengths to show detailed and accurate (current) imagery of the hotel on our website. This includes photos of both the common areas, as well as of the many various room types that we offer. We find the vast majority of our guests enjoy and appreciate the Inn’s ambiance and décor; what The Wall Street Journal described as “Rustically Elegant”. It seems almost impossible for someone to come through our doors and not already have a clear picture of what to expect. With respect to having to provide your billing information when making a dining reservation in The View restaurant, it is not uncommon in the industry for the property management software (rooms) and the dining outlets to operate on different software. Guest security and confidentiality are of the utmost importance to us, so when your credit card information is entered into one software, it is encrypted. This prevents anyone from being able to access (and thus share) your full credit card # with another individual or venue. This is for your protection. As the only Four Diamond restaurant in the area, The View is extremely popular. It is not uncommon for the restaurant to sell out and ultimately have to turn away guests. This is why we have a cancellation policy and require a credit card to hold and guarantee a reservation. Unfortunately, experience has shown us that not everyone extends the courtesy of calling to cancel their reservation. Lastly, and what seems to have been the biggest point of frustration for you, is the dog policy. You are correct in stating that dogs are not allowed in the common areas of the hotel, inside or out. They are only permitted in your guest room and walking to and from. This is for several reasons. First and foremost, for safety. We can’t guarantee how someone’s pet will behave and/or screen them behaviorally to ensure they would be gentle with other guests, particularly children. Secondly, are allergies. For dogs to be around other guests with allergies, or to be in common areas where other guests frequent does not seem fair. What I found particularly confusing about this issue for you is that we are very up front and clear with our dog policy. In fact, you were sent a detailed copy of the policy via email within 24 hours of making your reservation that clearly outlined the requirements of traveling with a dog. Yet another email outlining the policy was sent 24-hours prior to your arrival day. And then finally, this same policy was then presented again at the time of check-in for your review and signature. We send all of these communications prior to ever checking someone into the hotel so that there are no surprises and/or disappointments. If you weren’t comfortable with the policy, we can’t help but wonder why you chose to keep the reservation? In closing, I’d like to reiterate that we never want anyone to be disappointed with their experience here at the Inn. We strive for each and every guest to have a great time and then come back time and time again. We’re sorry you were disappointed about the style of the Inn and with our dog policy, but we honestly aren’t sure how we could have been any more transparent or candid about either…… Christopher Jarvis Director of Rooms Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa

The Mirror Lake Inn is by far our most favorite place to be. Visiting in April gave us time to relax and a chance to take advantage of some spectacular spring skiing. The mountain and village are not crowded this time of year which makes for a very pleasant experience while browsing through the shops and having our choice of restaurants. The staff at the MLI is truly special, always going out of their way to give us what we need and what we didn't even know we needed. The service and cleanliness are always spot on and our rooms in the Colonial House were spectacular. They look just as new as the day they were built. The lake view with the beautiful mountains was so tranquil to wake up to every morning. We had wonderful services at the Spa and relaxed at the indoor pool and hot tub. Dining at The View is truly a fine dining experienced but not pretentious. Chef Curtiss made sure everything was over the top delicious and our server did not miss a beat. And we can't end this review without mentioning the iconic Cottage. Always so much fun!

Great, beautiful, old-fashioned, centrally-located hotel that is wel maintained and has great service. It is close to the heart of Lake Placid and there are beautiful views everywhere (including at their View restaurant and Cottage restaurant). Pool is nice and the service is great (left a kid's toy and they kindly are mailing it to me). They deserve their solid ratings--definitely a new favorite.

The hotel was exquisite! I loved the grounds and the lights around the outdoors. We ate breakfast both of the mornings we were there in the view. It was buffet style but very nice, our waitresses Adrienne and Julianna were so attentive, happy and upbeat. It was a pleasure. Everyone was friendly and happy to help if needed, but we had no problems at all!

The Mirror Lake Inn has been our favorite vacation resort to go to for years, and it never disappoints. The grand entrance is warm inviting and full of charm. There are always fresh cookies, my kids favorites. The staff are extremely friendly, kind and accommodating. The rooms are much larger than any regular hotel, and they are full of elegance and Adirondack charm. The bedding is extremely comfortable. This time we stayed in a family room and it was perfect for our family of four. The kids each had their own bed and space, and my husband and I were able to stay up after the kids were asleep. It was extremely quiet, we could not here any other neighbors. We love the breakfast buffet, and the gorgeous views. There is a beautiful pool and hot tub, with natural surroundings, open late until 10. Whether we are there in winter or summer, there are always endless activities. It is the best location to be in in Lake Placid, directly across the lake with access to Mirror Lake, a 1 minute walk to all of the shops, all on its own large private grounds. This time, we enjoyed the outdoor fires, and the kids skated on the ice rink, and we all skied at Whiteface. Besides the activities, I could spend days just at the Inn itself, in the common rooms with the giant fireplace and games, views of the mountains, bar and spa. I honestly think our most fond memories as a family with young children are the times we have spent at the Mirror Lake Inn. It evokes a quintessential charm that is unique, Adirondack, and difficult to find in a world of mass production and chain hotels. If I could choose any place to go on vacation, it would be the Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid.

We stayed at the Mirror Lake Inn for the NCAA National Alpine Skiing Championships. Things my kids and I loved, in order: the pool and hottub area are beautiful, spacious, and relaxing, especially the waterfall; the service was amazing - they were welcoming, kind, always made eye contact, and gave helpful information; the breakfast buffet started at 7:30 (we are early risers so this is key) and my kids ate more food than I've ever seen them eat because all of the food was so fresh and tasty. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the kids loved the fresh cookies they received at check in. It was truly a luxury experience at every turn. We have stayed before, and we will stay again! Hopefully next time we will remember our ice skates so that we can skate on Mirror Lake and the rink at the Inn.

My husband and I planned our trip to Mirror Lake Inn for his birthday. After viewing the website, he called the Inn to ensure that our room would be a “suite”. (We require a separate sitting/living area because of our incongruent sleeping hours). We were charged $3454.00 for three nights for this “suite”. Well, our “suite” room was just a bedroom and bathroom. The bed had an economy mattress and the room was outdated with a brown matted carpet. The fireplace did not work properly. I asked for an additional blanket and was given a scratchy old blanket. The television was no larger than a desktop monitor. The room next to us was filled with a group of adolescent or very young men that was a bit disruptive. We were not offered another room - they stated that there were not others available even though their website stated there was a multi-room suite open. We only stayed one night. We were tired from lack of sleep. It was so disappointing, we even drove home in an ice storm. When we got home, we called the manager. He declined to reimburse even a portion of the charges. He adamantly denied that we asked for a suite of two rooms. He told us we should have done the math with the square footage listed on the website. We told him that the very definition of a suite is more than one room. Our booking receipt stated “suite”. We were additionally charged for three days of “housekeeping gratuity”. Also, we never received any housekeeping for the time we were there - they never came. We will never return. We paid $3454.00 for one night - it’s infuriating.

Dear Elizabeth H, While I am both extremely disappointed and disturbed by your review, sadly I am not surprised. When we spoke by phone, your husband was very candid in his intention to blackmail me into issuing a refund by threatening just such a review. Obviously, you decided to follow through and make good on that threat. That is unfortunate. Giving credit where credit is due though, the review was very creatively written. Reading the review was the first time I ever heard about many of your allegations. They were never mentioned to me. I suspect having taken a couple of weeks to work on the piece afforded the additional creativity. It is very tempting for me to go through and speak to each and every one of the many inaccuracies in your review. Instead, I will simply make a couple of points for the many other savvy and honest TripAdvisor users to consider as they evaluate your review and ultimately make their decisions on where to stay when visiting Lake Placid. • You acknowledged that you looked at the room online before ultimately booking it over the phone. The room is clearly described on the website as a “Studio Suite” and the images on the website depict the room as such. • I personally made this reservation with your husband. I have been with the Inn and making reservations for guests for 20 years. I know the rooms well and am confident that the room was described accurately. • You left the Inn around 8:00pm on your 2nd of 3 days. At no point did I ever hear from you to question your room layout or to share any concerns whatsoever. If I were in your position and the hotel manager had booked me into the wrong room, I would have mentioned that upon my arrival to the room. I would not have waited until the end of day 2 and then left abruptly. • You were not charged for 3 days of housekeeping service. Despite staying until 8pm on day 2, you were only charged for 1 day of housekeeping. We agree with your assessment of not returning to the Inn. We are honest, fair, and reasonable people and we like to deal with honest, fair, and reasonable people. Christopher Jarvis Director of Rooms Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa
