Detailed Reviews
We had a nice stay in Camp Sharwimbo. Even it was not the place we booked before, we got a campsite an great hospitality. The boat trip was private and in a beautiful surrounding of Kwando River with a competent guide who gives us lots of information about fauna and flora. Thank you Dume for this experience.

We arrived at Sharwimbo River Camp for a 2 night stay. The web site does not tell you that there is no electricity or water on camp sites. We arrived to camp with a fridge full of food. Having no power was a problem for us. We feel that when someone advertises camp sites a list of what is available should be listed. Eg. Elephant Sands quite clearly states no power points on their camp sites as do all the other sites we went to in Namibia. Also ghe lodge has no firewood, no ice or bar or anything. You have to be totally self sufficient. I feel that this should be communicated to people making bookings.
When we arrived there, there was no one to greet us. Eventually an old man came along to help. When we realised the situation we asked for a chalet. We were told that they are only prepared when people book in advance... so no chalet. Not impressed.

Having been excited to stay at this camp we where left shocked when the owner Ben introduced himself as the owner and left. A wonderful elderly gentlemen was left to show us our room. 2 hours after arriving the heavens opened and a lot of rain fell. Due to the way the tents are built our bathroom was flooded and our beds got very wet. When showering the next morning in a soaking wet and smelly bathroom from the downpour we discovered that our shower head was not working and so a cup had to be used to collect water to thrown over and try and wash. I contacted Ben the next morning informing him of the problem to which his reply was they my accusations and he checked the room. He was rude and could not have cared less. As A South African I was charged double to what our neighbours next door where., just one more to add to the shocking service. The place has so many problems with the way it is built and run. The only good part of the lodge is the elderly gentleman Bernard who is left to deal with the problems.

Sharwimbo River Camp is the most amazing place to stay on the Kwando River. Friendly staff and spacious clean rooms. Boats trips are wonderful. Game drives are very insightful. Sun downer drinks on the deck high above the river is a must.

Sure, the setting is nice and the accommodation acceptable but that is all the positive there is to say.
When I got there, the reception was closed and none of the people I had communicated with before my arrival (apparently the owner Ben and his "manager" Antonie) was around. After a few minutes the already mentioned elderly man named Bernhard appeared. His English is rather broken and he also seems to be illiterate, at least he couldn't differentiate between 200 $ and 100 $ note.
Anyway, I was shown to my tent. Now, I was travelling alone and without any camping equipment, in a 2x4 car; facts I had made clear BEFORE finalizing my booking. I had also and very specifically inquired about guided boat trips and guided game drives.
To make a long story short: during the next 30 hours I tried to call Ben and Antonie at least half a dozen times, I sent at least half a dozen text messages and left two voice messages, trying to organize my stay the way I had intended. Replied were exactly two. Sorry but this is NOT the way to run a business in the tourism sector.
For example, on the second evening all of a sudden the power was gone. Ok, this is Africa, things like this happen, so I waited patiently for 30 minutes after which I sent the last two of my half a dozen text messages. Again, no reaction and nobody to speak to on-site. It took another 30 minutes until staff showed up and fixed the problem.
Last but not least on my day of departure all of a sudden Ben found time to text me, but only to tell me that I was supposed to pay 100 $ for the use of their fridge. I flatly refused, not because 100 NAM $ is a lot of money but out of principle.
Of course when I left there was nobody to around to pay for the one boat tour and the one game drive I undertook. Since I certainly did NOT want to wait around and waste precious game drive time, I left the lodge intending to return and pay later.
Once again all of a sudden Ben became very communicative, threatening me he was about to inform the local police and the border posts - a threat that was obviously idle because he did not even have my license plate and by the time he wrote I could have been long gone past police and border posts.
I must admit, I thought long and hard about indeed not paying but in the end I decided I wouldn't want to act as low as these guys, although it meant I had to detour back for another half hour.
To sum it all up: I can totally relate to what joannj250 wrote in her review. There are MUCH MUCH better lodges and camps close by so don't risk booking at Sharwimbo. It may become a nice and smooth stay, but if you do have problems and even only wishes like booking a tour or a drive you may lose a lot of time and nerves.
