Good staff, rooms and public areas clean and organized and a very good restaurant. Good price/value and well located. They have contacts of turistic tours and things to do in and off the Island. They also have contacts of transportation from Nampula to Mozambique Island.
The old slaves trading posts in Mozambique Island are now the hotels for tourists! O Escondidinho is not an exception (the first O takes the shape of a slave collar on the Hotel logo). Fortunately when it was adapted to hotel many characteristics of the old building were kept. The staff is very friendly and the inner garden with swimming pool provides you moments of nice relax. Enjoy!
Arrived on the Island the day after a big storm had hit. There was no power and no mobile signals to the Island and no working ATM’s! We had fun organising local funds for our stay. The hotel was very helpful with this and was happy for us to put all meals on the room. When it came to paying still no phone signal and we couldn’t use a credit card but the patron was helpful and we found a way to pay. Staff kind and friendly and excellent food.
I had heard a lot of good things about the Escondidinho before. Historic pousada, tasteful style, French restaurant. So we were really excited about our family stay (grandparents, my husband, me and our daughter) Christmas 2017. Unfortunately, things have not turned out as expected and we have been quite disappointed by the treatment received. Here is why: BOOKING PROCEDURE: A nightmare. It took us 3 months and constant emails and phone calls to get finally an information on the price of the room and the banking details to do the transfer (it is not possible to secure the booking by giving the credit card details!) and to complete the reservation! The staff that attended us first obviously got fired in between, but nobody informed us on this! So we continued to rely on him for the transfer and he overcharged us nicely. ROOMS AND INFRASTRUCTURE: The pool area is nice. The rooms are spacious, simple and nice style, especially the big bathrooms make a family stay comfy. But, for the price of the room there should be a fridge in the room to have cold water available by temperatures over 30 C. There is none. The mossy nets don`t go until the floor and are quite useless. And the rooms in the front are noisy - locals seem to love to drive by and hang out on the little square with the stereo in the ultimate volume. We double suffered as we had the room at the end of the house were the numerous neighbour family is sleeping in the yard and fighting their family affairs out during the early morning hours. Sleep was very difficult SERVICE: The cleaning service was excellent, and the lady really tried to make make up for the bad organisation of the rest of the staff. The rest of the service was poor. In general, guests are not made feel welcome. Every question we asked at reception was answered in a very slow, arrogant and mostly unwelcoming way. The standard vocabulary is: no, not possible, not available and it depends – without being able to say on what. FOOD: It starts with a ridiculous sign in every room, which tells you exactly what you all have to pay extra for at breakfast. You can for example choose between cereals OR filter coffee and you get exactly one cup of it. The eggs have been slimy and without salt or any other taste. You get a tiny bit of butter and marmalade for a whole family and exactly counted little bread buns (children are not considered in the counting). The only good thing was the fruit salat. In general, the service in the restaurant is rather poor. We had to remind the waiter during a whole week on EVERY DAY that yes, the child also would like to have a fruit juice (that is included in the breakfast, but was never served for her) and that yes, it would be nice to have salt and pepper on the table. We just ate once at the restaurant at night for Christmas eve. Not to be recommended! All in all: the infrastructure is ok, but not worth the price (at least the high season price) and there are more friendly and better located (beautiful, quiet ones, directly overlooking the sea) pousadas so that I wouldn’t go again into this one.…
The hotel was a breath of fresh air after the B&B in Mocuba. The staff were amazing and made us very welcome especially the bar restaurant manager. The room was huge and very comfortable. The hotel has a lovely pool in a small garden courtyard. Parking was available in the square immediately in front of the hotel. The island itself was one of the highlights of our trip especially the museum in the Governor's Palace.
