The Roha hotel is the best hotel in town in all ways. Its architectural design, done by well-known international architects under the aegis of Hilton international, is breathtaking. The hotel lies in a seven acre of land closely forest covered by various indigenous trees. Bird life is attracted to the property in droves as this is the only safe place to live and forge for them in miles around. The

it was a truly wonders place to stay at since it was designed with the full respect for the history of Lalibela. After visiting those historical wonders and returning to this hotel made us feel like the journey continued. it connects you with the community and its way of life.

We stayed here three nights as part of an organised tour of Ethiopia. There were 15 in our group. It has a good situation, just down the hill from the busy Main Street, however as soon as you start up the hill be prepared to be surrounded by young boys all wanting to talk to you, some begging for money or goods, some selling some trinket or other, or some just wanting your email address. The hotel itself is quite impressive when you walk into the spacious lobby which leads to the large restaurant area and bar. Rooms are quite nice, and there is a fan which is mounted on a shelf near the ceiling. Unfortunately the fan is immovable and not necessarily blowing in the optimum direction for cooling. There are screens on the windows but I found the room unbearably hot during the night. Outside there is a lovely sitting area and bird feeders placed to attract the wildlife. What a treat seeing hornbills so close up! Breakfast is cooked to order--porridge, French toast, eggs of your choosing--and mango juice and toast. Staff very nice. I especially liked the armed guards at the gate who would salute with a smile as we passed.

Ethiopia is a poor country due to its turbulent history. Tourism is in its infancy here. There is a notable lack of construction expertise, electricians, plumbers and carpenters, and we found the quality of workmanship almost everywhere we stayed to be poor. We travelled as part of a tour group. We paid a single price for our whole trip and cannot comment on the value for money of this hotel. The reception area and the restaurant of the hotel were quite attractive but the rooms were almost identical to those of the previous hotel in Gondar. Wi-fi was available in reception. Our room was bizarre! In front of the door was a triangular divider that, presumably, was to prevent anyone entering the room immediately seeing someone in bed! To the left were hooks on the wall, one too high for me to reach. On the right was a small triangular area with a rail to hang things. In front of the divider was a shelf on which we gingerly put one suitcase. Behind the divider were two single beds. There were no shelves to put anything on. The basin was set into a triangular surface across one corner of the room. On the other side of the wall from the basin was the loo and next to this a bath with a shower; these were both very narrow and one had to keep one’s elbows in! We were travelling in a group and we were relatively lucky. Two ladies had no water and were moved to a different room where they had hot water but no loo seat. Another lady had no hot water both nights. There was no water at all in the hotel over lunch on our full day and we found out what the large bucket of water with the scoop under our triangular basins in the corner of the bedroom was to be used for…. The double bed was hard and we had only one bedside table. The TV was held together with Sellotape and sat on a log of wood. The fan did not work, but, fortunately, we did not need it. Our first evening we had dinner in the Kana restaurant. I am afraid that I have no recollection of this at all. However, breakfast was very poor. It included containers of: pre-made toast; dry chunks of over-scrambled egg; well-fried eggs cut into pieces; unappetising pieces of pancake; cut up omelette with small pieces of vegetables; and porridge! There was an interesting avocado/ papaya mix puree to drink along with coffee. My husband asked for some fresh fruit and was brought bananas. Bananas were pretty much ubiquitous and we wanted something else. He rejected the bananas and the waiter then bought some nice slices of papaya. Before I left the restaurant, I was making some notes. I obviously looked suspicious and the waiter asked if I needed anything. To my surprise, he then said that they had Lalibela honey. So, I asked where was it? He responded that it was out on the tables. When I pointed out that it wasn’t on our table, he said we should have asked for it!

We do appreciate and Value your constructive comments. As you mention it correctly The reception Area and the restaurants of the Hotel are quite attractive ;and were also seen most identicality with Hotel in Gonder ( Goha, Roha , Yeha,) You are absolutely right ; the reason for the similarity was ; at time there were an American Architecture and Ethiopian Engineer who waged an immense effort to materialize such a Beauty some decades ago ( Probably there were no Autocade Tech when they made this marvelous Hotel and that is why the similarity and the beauty existed on the structure. However, you have noticed very well. Apart from this after going through the four paragraph and line by line , personally to the details , Critically, judgmentally and thoughtfully ; I have come up with a remark that “We will KEEP OUR PROMISE and WORK ON it” ; because we are doing an expansion of a 100 plus room; which is to be opened in the near future. So, your comments is an ENERGY TO CALIBRATE OURSELVES and take it with open mind. Best Regards Roha GM

The lobby and internal bar/restaurant area is quite dark, but large with plenty of room to sit and have a drink. There is a small gift shop off the lobby area which sells some interesting bits and pieces. The room was quite tired but OK, there was an electric fan in the room which we had to use as there was no mosquito screen on the window, so couldn't sleep with it open. TV not working. Shower worked well. Staff were pleasant and welcoming. Breakfast limited, no fruit available. Wifi on/off as all over Ethiopia.
