Detailed Reviews
We stayed at the Old Abyssinia last weekend and had a wonderful time. The room was lovely, large, clean and tastefully decorated with local textiles and landscape paintings. The hotel organized transport and a guide for us to view the churches. We even caught a special church service Sunday for St. George. Wonderful experience can’t wait to go back soon! They having running water but no electricity. Luckily the staff let us borrow their charging power pack during the night.

We stayed at the lodge one night and had the chance to meet the charming and welcoming owner, Malcolm. We chatted on the beautiful restaurant veranda and enjoyed world-class sunset views. The lodge's rooms featured a little deck so that you can take in the views from your own table and chairs. The rooms were large and so was the bathroom/shower. I loved this place!

This could be a paradise. As often in Ethiopia, equipments are poorly maintained and rapidly get worn out. Our bathroom was smelly and the foor did not close. The room door was poorly fixed to the wall, with a hole in the wood. Restaurant staff put a loudspeaker in the courtyard with some kind of religious speech at 10 pm. The day after they were late and breakfast was not ready until 7:30 am instead of 7:00 am.

One of the unique things about this lodge, unlike anywhere else we stayed in Ethiopia, is that the lodge is almost a destination in itself. We spent a wonderful afternoon and evening, reading on the deck, enjoying a cold glass of beer, and then watching the sun go down over the horizon highlighting the layers and layers of abysinian mountains disappearing into the distance.
The rooms are stunning, they have beautiful locally carved furniture, and very large bathrooms. It might be nice to have the option of a fan, as it helps if you do get the off mosquito in your room (there were just a few into the evening but nothing bad).
The restaurant is lovely, looking out over the valley below with its wild flowers and bird life. The food was delicious, the best Ethiopian food we had on our travels was here.
The reception staff and guide the recommended were also excellent, the walk to the churches is a little of a distance if its hot, but there are plenty of tuk tuks to take you.
I would have no reservation in recommending this lodge, it was the closest we came too to accomodation along the styles of safari type lodges we have stayed in elsewhere in Africa (Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa....). Thoroughly recommended.

My mom and I stayed here for two nights in December 2016. The accommodations were basic but the essentials - hot water, clean, working wifi - were all there. The view from the room and the restaurant was very nice. What we really appreciated about the place was the staff. They were so eager to assist, receive our feedback, and make sure we were happy with our stay. The lodge is small - only three cabins/rooms - so it's quiet. We were often the only people there. The restaurant served good food and offered traditional dancing and music in the evenings, which we really enjoyed. We also really enjoyed the traditional coffee ceremony in the mornings (but learned too late that it would have been okay to ask for a cup of coffee to drink while we were watching the ceremony!). The lodge is located at the edge of town but is still walking distance to shops. I'm pretty picky about where I stay and would recommend this lodge to others as a basic but lovely, hospitable place to stay while in Lalibela.

I ended up staying 6 nights at old abyssinia because I fell in love with the peace and tranquility, spending hours gazing out to the mountains. The rondavel rooms and stunningly furnished with ethiopian artefacts and fabrics. A great hot shower and terrace with those amazing views. The food has been faultless - from Ethiopian specialities to pasta and sandwiches. Of course the coffee is always brewing and a beer watching the sunset from the terrace is something really special.
Friendly, efficient staff - this is a real gem in lalibela.

Superb view over the valley! Very kind and helpful staff and nice, clean and spacious rooms. Truly a gem. Book it before it is full because there are not so many rooms! They also arranged a very good guide for us (his name was something like Ermilyas...), great knowledge of the churches but also a excellent bird guide.

This boutique hotel (three rooms at present) has excellent views over the valley, but is quite far away from the churches and the centre of the town. Lonely Planet describes the place as 'very quiet', and that sums it up perfectly. But this also means an excellent sleep.
But when it rains the rooms have problems with flooding due to the position of the rooms - and it's really not great to get home to a flooded hotel room...
Breakfast was forgettable, although the honey was really good. But no fruit, no juices, no interesting food. The same was the case in the evening, and since the hotel is so far away from anything outside of tourist season, you're more or less obliged to eat-in. The restaurant should be assessed separately, by the way (and will earn only two stars).
Wifi can easily be improved - it can't get worse, at least...

We stayed for four nights and really enjoyed our time here. Of the various places in this price range we stayed at, this was the one where we really felt we got value for money. For breakfast the Ethiopian dishes were particularly good. Would definitely stay here again.
