I had heard good things about Scribners and was excited to stay there. Unfortunately it was a major disappointment. The front desk staff were totally unhelpful -- could not make restaurant recommendations, could not even help with reservations at the restaurant in the hotel, and looked at me like I was crazy for asking for help with getting a large suitcase up to my room. Then there was the room itself -- looks good in pictures but totally uncomfortable. Thin walls where we could hear everything next door. Noise from the lobby below filtering into the room all night. One of the two beds in the room was about 6 inches from the HVAC system with an unmovable vent blowing air right at eye level the whole night. Nice sheets but low quality pillows and mattresses. Tiny bathroom with no room to put your things. If the price had been half what it was, I might have accepted these issues but at the prices they are charging everything should have been better.

Great experience. Lovely little escape! I loved the feel of this hotel and the view of the mountain was very special. It’s cozy and beautiful and just a great escape for a city dweller. Library was well-stocked with unique reads. The food was fantastic and the people in the restaurant were really knowledgeable about the food. Fantastic stay all around!

In many years of business travel this is amongst the worst places in terms of value for money. For the price - over USD 500!!!! a night - the facilities are completely under-resourced and the rooms are not up to standard. There is no closet nor a dresser. Theoretically you can hang up your cloth in the open wardrobe right at the door, however the bed is one level up, so with the bed one level up, to get to your clothes you have to wander around the room. There is no dresser, so underwear will either have to be stored openly right in the entrance wardrobe or on the sofa in plain view. If that is not to your taste then its the suitcase on the floor next to the bed. There is no table in the room, so in case you need to write some mails you‘ll have to do it on your knees. There is no fitness room. No business corner either. So printing anything means it has to be sent to a random mail of the hotel. If it’s confidential, not a great place to be. And DO NOT book room 50!!!!. the bed sits directly next to the wall to which the chimney of the kitchen’s ventilation system is attached, so you have the feeling of sleeping next to the chimney of an ocean liner. And last but not least, the staff is no were near what you would expect for a place of this price. Marginally competent and not well organized. In any case, the chances that I have to come back are zero, so I’ll hang in there for the few nights I have to be here.

Hip Lodge by Hunter Mountain. The owners did a major makeover. It’s kind of swanky with with a hipster vibe— if that’s what you’re looking for. Easy to find and convenient to the slopes. It has a good restaurant and bar as well. It also has a spa and a pool. Overall a good spot for those who have the $ and appreciate the style

We loved most things about this upscale, comfortable lodge nestled in the mountains, with its well-trained, gracious staff. ROOM: We had a Mountain King (with balcony). Big enough, though not spacious (not much extra space but enough to comfortably walk around the room; comfy bed and pillows; convenient table that folds up to wall is good height for working on laptop; large open closet with good quality hangers; robes (but no slippers); full length mirror; extra plastic bag in wastebasket you can use for your laundry; great HVAC system with a setting for plain fan; HEPA filter!; large doorway to balcony with screen; gorgeous view of mountains (somewhat ruined by view of pool below). Slight problems, but not dealbreakers: poor lighting in room; no drawers for storage; few and out of the way outlets (we were constantly exchanging, unplugging one device to make room for another in out-of-the-way places); wooden stools at table are the right height, but uncomfortable to sit on for long (however, they nicely double on the balcony as little tables); canned pop music that is not to everyone’s taste from the pool has pounding base going from 8 am – 10 pm (starts 10 am on Sunday). You may have come to the countryside in the off-season for peace and quiet, but if you have a Mountain view room, you will hear this music all day long. Along these lines, people generally come to the Catskills off-season at least in part for clean fresh air. I think it is a real problem that rooms are furnished with reed diffusers (scent sticks) that add fragranced toxins to the air. Some guests may like them, but many won’t, so why not just stick with clean, fresh air? (There was also a scented candle at the reception desk.) BATHROOM: Modern, functional; great shower; good heat system; bright. Negatives: small size; limited shelf space. BREAKFAST: Fine. DINNER: Very good food and good service; comfortable setting. Note, a 20% tip is added automatically to the bill. COMMON AREA: Huge indoor space; lots of grounds as well. All in all, a very nice, comfortable accommodation with minor problems. However, Scribner’s is not adept at managing disability accommodation requests. [If you look at the website, you’ll note that all the references are to “ADA accessibility.” However, they are actually only referring to wheelchair access, and possibly to people with other mobility impairments. In fact, guests may have a range of disabilities, and there is no reference whatsoever to this. (The image on the Access page of the website has nothing to do with disability, which reflects the lack of disability awareness of accommodation higher-ups. While they reference access to the website, in fact the font, contrast and size is not particularly accessible.)] As for my particular situation, my advanced written disability access request was first overlooked, then worked out, then overlooked again. In the end, we did work it out and I do believe that management now has a basic understanding that disability access requires a system for collaborating with guests who have disabilities, fulfilling accommodations, and then monitoring. I would advise though, that guests with disabilities follow up their written requests with a phone call. I believe this accommodation is getting it, and it is a very nice place to stay, so I’d give it a chance. We go to the Catskills frequently and I plan to return to Scribner’s. I found the service very welcoming, the room attractive and comfortable, the setting spectacular, and the food very good.

My husband and I booked a short stay at Scribners from Sun-Tues and truly had a great experience. We booked a special for free breakfast every morning and I thought it was just going to be some pastries- boy was I wrong. It was FANTASTIC. The restaurant is truly unmissable- we ate dinner there on Sunday night and it was incredible. The staff went above and beyond to make sure our stay was comfortable, and they even left us a bottle of cider for my husbands birthday. The hotel has gorgeous views, and they really nailed all the little details. We will definitely be back.

This place needs a reality check. It's not even close to being worth the cost to stay here. I loved it years ago when it was Scribner Hollow. I'll admit the facelift was much needed, but the hotel was not redone, and it lacks the modern amenities you would expect with the associated cost. The biggest mistake this place made was getting rid of the grotto. Nobody has that and it was a huge draw and fun for all ages. Don't even get me started on the restaurant. The food lacks any substance, and you will leave starving with an empty wallet. There is nothing to do in town and it's mostly deserted to be honest. I hate to say it, but the best plan when coming up to Hunter to ski is to stay at a hotel in Saugerties where the town is thriving, and you have the convenience of being by the thruway...a no brainer for us going froward.

We really enjoyed our stay, made good use of the common area for playing games and relaxing, enjoyed a tequila tasting, and breakfast was outstanding. Room was clean and quiet. Some staff was very friendly, others not as much - but ok. Would plan to return for sure.

The common room looked lovely, but always had dogs in it so we didn’t use it. (Why do people think it’s ok to wear a bathrobe and walk their dogs in the only common room of the lodge?). The room (number 16, king, with balcony overlooking the pool) was smallish, no drawers, bed pretty soft. Ok, but the bathroom needed updating: quite small, grungy grout in shower and slow shower drain, outdated sink fixture. Most but not all staff was helpful and cheerful, nice restaurant/bar and we appreciated its convenience. We were mostly out all day, did not use the pool, do yoga or attend the bonfires. If I were looking for a lounging lodge where you can spend time in your room or the common areas, I would look elsewhere.
