What a lovely camp located in a game rich area in Lower Zambezi. Every room has a spacious deck and private plunge pool overlooking the Zambezi River, elephants would often cross the river right in front of the camp. On gamd drives we had an amazing leopard sighting on arrival and couple of wild dog sightings as well. We also love the boating experience which you can see the elephants and hippos up close along the river. The lunch on Zambezi sand bank was unforgettable! Thanks a lot to the Sausage Tree team for offering us an amazing 2 nights stay!
Just returned from 4 nights at Sausage Tree Camp and 4 nights at its sister camp, Potato Bush Camp, having had a simply fabulous time. Special thanks go to Martin, Charles, Faith, Chile, Ashifu, Professor, Mike, Wisdom and the teams at both camps for the most amazing experience. Potato Bush Camp was everything I expected in an intimate, friendly, rustic camp whilst Sausage Tree offered a step-up in luxury but without losing any of the intimacy offered at its sister camp. Consistency of guide (Charles), spotter (Professor) and muchinda (Ashifu), `Assistant to the Chief aka personal butler, across both camps is a real selling point when travelling on safari; all of whom offered first class service, knowledge and friendship during my stay. A private vehicle at no extra cost is also a huge bonus allowing time and privacy to pursue one’s personal interests. This was the first solo safari for me in 7-years travelling Africa and these guys, along with the rest of the Sausage Tree and Potato Bush Camp teams, made me feel welcome, part of the family, engaged and valued throughout my stay. A special thanks to Charles for his openness, honesty and willingness to debate any and all subjects, along with some great banter and laughs along the way! Being invited to dine with Jason, the owner from Australia, and his family was a very nice touch and dinner with Martin Hancock, the General Manager, on three occasions was very pleasant with the conversation and wine flowing smoothly over many shared interests and views. To be so engaged top-down from owner/ GM within a lodge is highly unusual and, again, sets Sausage Tree aside from other camps with the experience very much coming across as natural and comfortable and in no way scripted or contrived. The accommodation at both camps was as expected and to a high standard with both rooms spacious, well adorned and both with the luxury of a splash pool to wash away the mid-morning heat post-game drive (39 degrees mid-Oct rising to 41/42 by end). The food was common at both camps and offered variety, quality and nutrition; lunch is selected from a combination of light bites and more substantial meals, with dinner being silver service from a choice of three starters, mains and deserts. Whilst you have to work hard during the game drives if you are a more experienced traveller with specific preferences, the end result certainly didn’t disappoint with some excellent sightings, including; Elephants swimming between the river channels, 2.5 hours with a male and female Leopard with a cub interacting with the Baboons having just devoured one of their troop, the largest pack of Wild Dogs I’ve seen in Africa at 36 with 13 pups, Porcupines, Civets and even a reported Aardvark on night drives, although I missed the latter by a few minutes. Whilst I originally wasn’t planning to partake in the activities beyond game drives, I am so pleased I did and very much enjoyed the boat trip, canoeing through the river channels getting up close and personal to Hippos and Crocs, alongside Elephant and Buffalo on the river bank. The highlight has to be catching a 18lb Tiger Fish on my first cast of the line and within 5 minutes of casting, very memorable indeed, followed up the next time with a slightly smaller 8lb Tiger Fish but nevertheless a very addictive experience. The Lower Zambezi is hailed as the last great wilderness in Africa with some of the most beautiful scenery on the continent. The beauty of this area is complemented by the warmth and friendship I experienced at Sausage Tree Camp and Potato Bush Camp. Apologies to the management teams for combining my review but I really think experiencing both camps epitomises what is on offer, whether you’re after a more rustic experience or seeking an element of luxury. This safari delivered both for me and more! Thanks to all those I’ve mentioned in this review and to you fellow colleagues for a truly memorable experience. Special thanks to Ashifu for taking such good care of me including calming me down after having been stung by a scorpion!…
We had a wonderful week at Sausage Tree. The location is stunning and the service, both at camp and when out with our guide, was impeccable. Highly recommend going out on the boat to view animals (hippos, crocs and elephants mainly) as well as the canoe and game drive activities. Despite sightings of lions and leopards (as well as the hippos etc) the game wasn’t as prolific as we had expected but appreciate that this may have been due to the heat/one of those things! Sausage Tree is a magical place and we would absolutely recommend it. If we were to visit the Lower Zambezi again, perhaps at a different time of year, we would definitely stay there again.
Our 3 night stay was booked through our travel planner, and it didn't disappoint. Everything and everyone from the minute we landed in Jeki was great. The location can't be beat! We had come from a safari experience in Kruger, which was great, and this was a nice compliment to give us a different kind of safari experience. The trek to get here isn't an easy one, but worth it. The surprises don't end - we loved every minute!
Top notch all around from pickup at the Jeki airport thru return there for departure. Among a multitude of African park lodges experienced to date across East and southern Africa this is simply THE best. The lodge and location are wows! Add the genuinely warm and hard working team which in its entirety is oriented around making the Sausage Tree Camp a very special place and they do! The food choices are excellent, diverse and plentiful. Add game drives replete with high density of some species and all added up I depart with extraordinary memories from this very special slice of the African continent.
Wonderful accommodations and fantastic guiding, with choice of land and water-based activities. Perhaps the best part though, is the incredible service and a team that arranges special experiences and takes such great care of you.
Sausage Tree was the first of 3 lodges we were to visit in Zambia and the first of 6 lodges during our month long African adventure. To say they set a very high bar is an understatement. We were met at the airport by Henry who would be our guide during our 5 night stay. We got "acquainted" during the drive and boat ride to the lodge. Every staff member was wonderful. GM Martin (tx for the scotch) and associate Charles; guide Henry (multiple flat tires but many wonderful hours of animal sightings by jeep, by boat and on foot; our butler Arnold who was perfect in all roles; barman Brian who kept our glasses full of our favorite drinks and Chile, who always had time to chat with Linda. We enjoyed and greatly appreciated the various special activities (lunch on the Zambezi). Highly recommended.…
I cannot recommend this camp too highly - it was my best safari experience ever. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff , the food was excellent and the accommodation the best I have encountered anywhere in the world.
You arrive by boat, over the Zambezi river at this gem by the river. We had 4 amazing days at this lodge. The 'rooms' are XL-suite size, with a small private pool. The staff is extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable on flora and fauna. Nothing is too much to ask and every day we were treated with a wonderful surprise that made our stay even more memorable. We think back on every staff member and every minute of our stay with joy and gratefulness. It was with pain we had to leave, however it was more than the perfect ending to a wonderful holiday in Zambia. Thank you!
After a long delay and with much anticipation, I returned to Sausage Tree. This was my 3rd visit after 2017 and 2019. I was once again amazed that I was meeting the same friends for the 3rd time, Henry, Chris and Mike! That's absolutely awesome. And they are only getting better and better each time. Henry picked me up with a chilled Mosi and Amarula-flavoured Coffee as I liked it 2 and 4 years ago. We then enjoyed a private session with a rock python devouring a mongoose for a good one hour. What a start! The Zambezi carried unusually high water so the canoe tour turned into an absolute thriller with elephants and hippos. Man, that's cooler than any NatGeo on TV. During siesta time I enjoyed my favourite infinity pool, watching elephants wandering through camp or hippos grazing on land opposite the pool. I enjoyed Chris' impeccable butler service. His memory is equally amazing. Mike kept me hydrated at all times. Thanks man, good stuff you have in your little bar. Meals were amazing, they must be serving the best croissants in the country. Wished I stayed a few nights longer but now I have a good reason to come back again.…
