This was our third stay at Kafunta (Sept 2016, Aug 2019, Sept 2023), and we hope to come back again! Everything about the camp is great: the food, the outlook, and the people are all outstanding. The bar/deck area and pool are particularly nice, with an endless stream of wildlife to watch while you lunch and siesta. The drivers and guides are excellent, and although the lodge is just outside of the National Park, the 'commute' is not a problem.

We only stayed one night at Kafunta River lodge, after staying at both bush properties for five nights before. The River Lodge has a bit more a hotel feel, for those who prefer it. I must confess that I enjoyed having a bit of Wifi at the main area, but was still able to appreciate being disconnected in our chalet. I think that this is necessary to really appreciate the safari experience. We also enjoyed the luxury of a very relaxing massage with Maria before going out on a game drive. The location on the floodplane was wonderful, especially as we stayed back on our final morning to catch our flight and were still able to enjoy watching the animals, including some impala leaping around. Our chalet had excellent views of baboons as well, who spent time just outside the closed in balcony area. Our transfer from Three Rivers was like a game drive itself, and we had an excellent evening game drive with David and Zagwa, who made sure that I finally saw a zebra (several actually, including a baby) up close. We also visited a leopard eating her kill (an impala) up a tree with a hyena waiting for her to drop it. We learned that hyenas tend to be more solitary when there are more leopards than lions, as they can steal their kills. Somehow, Zagwa and David spotted a chameloen in a tree, at night! The game are a bit richer here than at the bush camps, but you do encounter more people and vehicles. We were excited to see Jacob from Island Bush Camp to greet us, as the bush camps had closed. This was the close of a wonderful first safari experience, and we are so glad that we chose to stay with Kafunta Safaris.

Dear Amanda, Thank you so much for taking the time to add a review for Kafunta River Lodge, even if your stay was very short! And thank you for your dedicated reviews of our other camps, where you stayed longer. Your itinerary was a bold one - starting with our most remote and rugged camp! But we're glad you enjoyed every single day out on safari and every night out in the camps. Having no Wi-Fi at the camps is a delight indeed, a proper way to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature. Kafunta River Lodge is a bit different because, as it is located near Mfuwe, we are lucky to have full electricity and access to more amenities. And wifi allows our guests to share their experience with their friends and loved ones! For you, it was perfect to end this way. We're so happy you understood our various properties for what they are and offer: "an experience of a lifetime"! But we hope it won't be your last safari! Thank you again for trusting Kafunta Safaris with your first African experience. Most sincerely, Izzy

we loved this lodge, everything about it. the staff and service, the lovely room, the game drives, their focus on customer service - it was all top tier. we had to make alterations to our booking and they adapted to our needs. we had one or two issues with our guide but they listened with sympathy and worked with us to sort it all out. we really felt looked after!

Zambia was the last country we visited during our vacation. We spent six nights in Kafunta and we had a great time. All the staff were amazing and especially the infectious energy of Kolo and the always smiling and friendly Precious made the stay perfect. The food was a lot but fantastic. The houses were individual and idyllic. The direct location to the national park gave us a great view of what was waiting for us in the park from the terrace of the accommodation. We would love to come back.

My second stay at Kafunta and as memorable as my first, wonderful welcoming staff, a special mention for Betty, Precious and our extremely knowledgeable guide David and spotter Zagwe, apologies if I've spelt it wrong!! The sighting of Wild Dogs, lions, leopard as well as zebra, giraffes, elephant made it a fantastic trip and the meals and accommodation is absolutely first class.

We had a magical one night stay at Kafunta Three rivers, sleeping under the vast African sky in their star bed was an unforgettable experience, my first ever star bed experience in the bush. As we lay there, we were serenaded by the sounds of hippos, hyenas, and the symphony of bush sounds, including crickets, rain frogs, and the anticipation of impending rainfall. Tj, the host, was an absolute gem, his warmth and kindness mirrored by his attentive staff. The dinner was one of the highlights of our stay, the roast beef was a masterpiece, cooked to perfection, and the mere thought of it still makes my mouth water. Our stay was truly delightful, a harmonious blend of nature's lullaby and exceptional hospitality, leaving us with a lovely memory of our stay at Kafunta Three Rivers

Our seven night visit to Kafunta River Lodge was the latest of our many safaris to South Luangwa valley and Africa in general. All stays have been good, but our experiences of Kafunta were especially memorable. Accommodation, meals, and camp facilities are excellent, without being "OTT". Prices are reasonable for a stay in this part of Africa. All staff were very helpful and friendly, and it was good to talk to Anke and Ron when they came into camp and share memories of earlier times in South Luangwa. On this trip we were taken on game drives accompanied with Solomon our fantastic guide. Solomon had an uncanny skill of finding elusive leopards, and enabled amazing sightings. A first for us, was to witness a lion pride take down an impala within twenty metres of the camp accommodation. Unforgettable. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended safari at Kafunta River Lodge.

Dear "cleerise", Thank you so much for your detailed report after your visit to Kafunta River Lodge! I'm very happy to read that you've enjoyed your stay and that you recommend our property, especially with your extensive experience in other parts of South Luangwa. That's really wonderful. Thank you for the kind comments on the staff and on Solomon. Yes, that kill in front of the lodge was something else! We are more used to wild dogs, but hey - lions are welcome too. That's the great thing about South Luangwa and the parks in Zambia: there are no fences, and wild animals can be found roaming through lodges and camps. It's the real Africa! Most sincerely, Izzy

We started our South Luangwa stay here, before going to the other more rustic Kafunta properties. What a spectacular setting, with the marshy plains where Kafunta is set and during every meal we saw a variety of wildlife. The lodge is lovely, especially the common and dining areas. The chalets have everything you need (and in our case some things we didn’t, with way too many flying beetles), but we were there during 100+ degree weather and the rooms did not cool off much despite having a fan. Kolo, the lodge manager, and staff, including Betty and Precious, were outstanding. Maria, the masseuse, is excellent and the massages we had were probably some of the best we’ve ever had. Our guides Solomon and Cannan were excellent and we had many rich and wonderful game drives. A highlight was visiting the local Uyoba school, Project Luangwa and village with our wonderful guide Ernest – a good reality check and nice break from the park.

Dear "rwendin", Thank you so much for your review of Kafunta River Lodge, and our other properties. It's so great to read that you've enjoyed the lodge (despite the heat and bugs - did you have the first rains?) and the wildlife around. Thank you for your feedback about our staff and guides, including our wonderful Maria. This will be shared with them right away! And I'm delighted to also read that you enjoyed your visit of Project Luangwa and Mfuwe, it is equally important to spend time understanding the lives and challenges of our local community. Thank you for doing that. I hope you will come back for more! Most sincerely, Izzy

Our stay at Kafunta was an amazing experience from beginning to end. The staff are all so friendly and welcoming, that it felt like staying with your extended family. All the facilities were top notch and it was hard to believe at times that we were in the middle of the wilderness. The bush camps were excellent value and offered a different perspective on the park and its wildlife. Would recommend this experience to anyone wanting to visit Africa.

I spent five days at Kafunta River Lodge and enjoyed every minute! The lodge and its chalets were well set out. The chalets were extremely comfortable. The day was well organised with early morning and afternoon/evening game drives. Our safari guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The food was excellent and the ambience was everything I have come to love about Africa over the times I have travelled there. I can recommend Maria, the masseuse, she managed to unknot my neck and back muscles with her massage. The staff are efficient, friendly and helpful. The security guard was always on hand to escort me to and from my chalet - very useful when hippos or elephants come to visit the camp! I can thoroughly recommend Kafunta River Lodge!
