I stayed at Flatdogs Camp with a friend for three nighs in December 2021. After traveling in many countries in Southern Africa, this must have been the best safari experience I have ever had. The camp is directly in front of the Luangwa river, where hippos and elephants bathe daily. On our arrival at the camp, four elephants were roaming among the tents eating bushes - all normal and safe at Flatdogs as wildlife is part of the experience here, with security rangers scouting the area day and night to help guests. Expect to get many impalas and bucks, and even hippos, graze by your tent during day and night. The staff at the camp was absolutely above-par, both at the dining area, and during game drives, as the rangers really know the ins and outs of the park. The South Luangwa National Park is one of the best parks I've visited, in two days of game drives we were able to see all big five, including a lion eating a prey, wild dogs chasing impalas, a leopard sleeping on a tree, and countless elephants and giraffes all over. Bonus, Flatdogs is working hard to push the local economy and help neighboring villages, and we had the chance to visit a village conservation project, where a local community greeted us and showed us around explaining us their culture and lifestyle in this wild region of Zambia. Can't recommend enough, thank you so much for the great experience!

Thanks for the great review. It is so important that we make sure that local people see more of the benefit from tourists directly through community tourism that we are helping them set up. This encourages them to conserve the habitat and wildlife that we are looking after for the whole of mankind! There are not many places left like this and more than ever we need the local people to be involved in protecting it. So great that you mention that and had such a great experience visiting a working village of the type our staff come from and get to understand some of the difficulties, and pleasures, that communities deal with on a daily basis. And of course great that you had such a nice time at Flatdogs. Thanks for the high praise! Ade

a friend and I stayed at Flatdogs during our visit to South Luangwa National Park - best decision in this trip. Jess and Arthur took care of us soo well. They planned for us a great itinerary and the experience at the camp was beyond anything we expected. Elephants crossed once next to our tent and at night hippos were eating grass just meters away from our beds. The experience was simply marvelous and I hope I can return to South Luangwa and stay at Flatdogs again! Thank you so much for your hard work and effort!

We are thrilled to write this review for Flatdogs Camp, where we had the pleasure and privilege to stay during our trip to South Luangwa this past November. Looking at the innumerable positive and wonderful reviews about the camp, and after our tour consultant also proposed this camp, we decided to book our stay at Flatdogs Camp. Both of us being hobbyist photographers, we had fairly specific requirements and high expectations, and the camp delivered across all fronts. A big thanks to Jess and Ade, the owners for being such wonderful hosts and for running the camp so well! Our original safari was scheduled for Jun'21 but the Covid-19 related flight suspensions and travel bans meant we could only travel in Nov'21. Jess was kind enough to reserve the accommodation for us while we were struggling to reschedule and figure out the feasible travel dates. We also decided to extend our safari from 8 nights as originally planned to 10 nights, and booking a longer stay was a breeze! Accommodation & camp: We stayed in the standard tents which were basic but very comfortable and had everything you needed. There are more than sufficient plug points to charge all your gadgets. The bed is cozy and comfortable. During the booking, we had requested for the river facing tents and Jess happily arranged the same for the entire duration of our stay. Even though the location of the camp is outside the national park, it is unfenced and just by the Luangwa river; hence it is usually buzzing with wildlife throughout the day, and more so during the night. Elephants, Puku, Impala, Bush-buck are commonly seen in and around the camp during the day time. At night time, there are watchmen to escort guests back to the tents. It's a phenomenal experience to sleep to the sounds of Africa; waking up in the middle of the night to hear a Leopard or Lions roaring close by or to hear a Hippo or an Elephant foraging for food next to your tent is an unparalleled adventure. The safari tents offer you exactly that experience! The camp in general is rustic yet beautiful, clean and well maintained. There are a couple of swimming pools and a cosy swing by the river where one can relax and unwind on a hot sunny afternoon. Laundry services are available in house. The camp arranges for Covid-19 PCR tests in house itself which makes it so convenient and stress-free. Food: The restaurant at Flatdogs is reputed and well known for its quality and taste. It is not unusual to see guests from other camps, or even locals, regularly visiting Flatdogs. Being vegetarians, we were slightly sceptical in terms of the options we may have had for our meals. But thanks to Ade, and the chefs, we had no problems whatsoever food wise. We had shared a particular recipe - Indian chickpea curry, before our trip and on the first afternoon we were pleasantly surprised to have been served exactly that. It was cooked to perfection and couldn't have been made better! The meals are delicious and the desserts are next level! Even the snacks packed for the coffee breaks on game drives are wonderful and tasty. Everything is literally home made (including bread which they serve before every meal) which makes it so much authentic. The team caters to all dietary requirements. The restaurant staff are very kind, friendly and warm, and ensure the guests are well fed. Game-drives, guiding and sightings: The guiding quality is top-notch and impressive. Jonathan, our dedicated safari guide for the entire trip is extremely knowledgeable, experienced and understands the bush like the back of his palm. Being a local and having grown up there, he has utmost respect and love for the park and it was not surprising to see him during game drives to pick up litter thrown out by careless and ignorant tourists. Managing guest expectations, and especially photographers is not easy and Jonathan excels in that. Even when we had other guests sharing the vehicle with us, he ensured our well-being and regularly checked if we were doing fine. He ensured that the vehicle positioning was right for us, from a photography angle point of view. We are obliged to him for having saved us from a bee attack during one game drive where he got stung several times but quickly managed to drive us out of that dangerous situation. On the other hand, Charles, who was our spotter, has an amazing pair of eyes. During evening drives, he aided in finding some elusive and nocturnal species via his brilliant spotting skills. It is shocking and impressive to have seen him spot and identify a tiny green chameleon on a bush amidst the leaves from a moving vehicle. Their skills and local expertise is wonderful and very inspiring. We had fairly high expectations from a sightings point of view, and thankfully we got to see and photograph everything we wanted including Leopards - the marquee species in South Luangwa, and the endangered African Wild Dogs, not to mention innumerable other animals and birds. Both Jonathan and Charles usually shared insightful details about the species, like their behavior, life-cycle, etc. We had requested for a full-day excursion to the Nsefu sector on one day and the northern areas near Kaingo Lion Camp on another day and the camp happily arranged it for us. Staff: Last but not the least, it is the people who make or break the experience. The guest-centric culture is apparent right from the owners at the top, higher management staff, right down to junior staff. Jess, Ade, Paolo are extremely kind-hearted and approachable. They ensure the well being of not just guests but also personal and professional growth of the staff. There are examples of individuals who worked as a watchman earlier and went on to join the restaurant staff; or conversely individuals who worked at the restaurant were encouraged and are now amazing guides. The entire Flatdogs team serves with a smiling face and enrich guest experience. To summarize, Flatdogs is an institution and carries a rich tradition and legacy in this amazing reserve. Flatdogs camp is a name you can trust and rely on, without a doubt. We highly recommend them - they know what they're doing and are the best in business. Such was our experience that at the time of leaving, we were emotional and left with moist eyes.

We still have the menu on the blackboards written by you to remind us of your stay. Your Chana Masala has also become a regular on the menu. It makes us all very proud of what we are doing here and hope that it encourages more people to make Flatdogs a bucket list destination. After 12 years living in Zambia I finally made it to South Luangwa National Park. Would it live up to all the chatter I had head? Definitely, it did. Flatdogs was a name I had heard over the years as other folks I knew had headed for game viewing. It was the best decision ever... I can hardly give the team enough praise. Ade and Jess are great hosts attending to us in an understated way but keeping an eye on the ball to make sure everything ran smoothly - if it ever didn't during my 4 night stay, I certainly didn't notice. The team was friendly, polite and helpful - when you needed someone they were around. Well trained in what they did and proud of their camp. The food - wow, to have on tap so many choices at any time of the day was just amazing considering the logistics to the region. Their support to local producers for much of their requirements is great for the rural community and bringing in modest supplies where items are not available locally, really good neighbours to have!! Five star food, some of the best I have enjoyed in the whole of Zambia. If something went off the menu temporarily, an even better dish replaced it. I've undertaken trips to many of the key African safari destinations over 40+ years but I can't remember having had so many sightings of the Big 5 guys - leopards, lions, buffaloes, elephants (I see rhinos in Livingstone regularly anyway), plus add the elusive wild dogs/ painted dogs is a much better name when you get to see them up close. I had 6 game drives and 1 walking safari - every one had something special. Leopard in a tree chewing an impala, lions tracking impalas in the dusk, huge herd of buffalos causing a traffic holdup, migratory carmine bee eaters filling the sky, 50+ crocs feasting on a dead hippo in a lagoon - you name it we saw it. It started to get ridiculous really when on the last day there were lions mating in front of us - I mean really!! Obviously some luck involved but Flatdogs' guides got us to the right place at the right time every day. A brilliant break from a hectic intensive job, I felt I had a holiday despite getting up at 5am to get out into the bush. Even in their grounds there is a lot of interest - pukus, impalas, family of mongoose, monkeys galore with bald headed babies, giraffes and a family of elephants with baby strolling past my deluxe tent. Flatdogs gave me one of the best safari experiences that I've ever had and I will definitely chose them again if I'm heading that way. Thank you Jess and Ade and team.
