Beautiful location on the river with stunning birdlife. We didn’t visit in the best time for game as the Bush was thick and the grasses long and lush as the rains not so long finished so we didn’t get lucky with leopard or lion (although we heard them and spotted tracks) but we did see hyena on two occasions, once in the early morning and another on the night drive (it was quite scary with red eyes coming out of the darkness very close by but totally worth the thrill!). Nevertheless there’s plenty more to see with owls, mongoose and bush babies and fish eagles & elephants spotted across the river... plenty of hippos and crocs! We had an amazing stay and were looked after unbelievably well by all of the staff, can’t thank them enough. Big hearty breakfasts overlooking the river after a morning drive was the dream. We were very lucky to stay in the honeymoon house. The balcony onto the river bank is the perfect spot to sit and read. You will have no internet or phone reception (unless you’re on airtel) but you don’t need it here! Fishing on the river is an absolute must as well as an afternoon and/or evening bath at the hot springs.

The place is beautiful, the view on the river magnificent, the staff polite and friendly, the food good. The bungalows are well furnished BUT excessively spartan (=poor), no electricity in the room and no wi-fi everywhere, no data connection except in a small point at the reception (and how weak!). In other words, it's like stepping back 200 years, and I can't understand why, since for 250 dollars for person for night, you might pretend some extra confort. The experience is not repeteable (even for other reasons connected to the area in the park)

Do not expect to see much wildlife because poaching is a real problem in Kafue National Park. The lodge and the self catering chalets are mostly well located with river view. Positive are the sense of exclusivity and the tranquility. Nearby hot springs are also worth visiting. On the downside are the long and in bad condition last 100 km gravel road (it took us 3 hours from Mumbwa to the lodge), the tse tse flies (not in the lodge but during game drives) and the quite high prices for activities. Also not sure why to pay 5 USD per swim in the pool (when you stay in the self catering chalets) and 15 USD (always per person) when you want to have a dip in the hot water springs, less than a km away from the lodge ...

An amazing place with even better wildlife. From the staff to the majestic Kafue river everything seemed to come together to make this a destination of a lifetime. Our stay in the 'A Frame' house (I forget the african name) was everything you need/want, clean comfortable with a luxurious and huge bad, placed in front of the window to make the most of breathtaking and uninterupted views over the Kafue river. We awoke every morning to the sound of hippo's calling, birds singing and lion roaring in the distance (sometimes pretty close as well). The food was also amazing and pleantyfull, the only problem is finding anough room for every course. We could not have asked for better game viewing during our stay. We spent alot of time on the river and the animals were there every day for us with many siteings of leopard, lion, elephant, water bufalo, monitor lizard and the list goes on, The birds were amazing also with many siteings of Skimmers and Malacite king fishers. This realy was a trip of a lifetime, but we are already looking to book again. We would recomend this lodge to anyone and everyone

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! We had the most amazing time and your generosity in helping with everything for us on this visit is truly appreciated. Hippo Lodge is a most special and wonderful place. The setting, the peace and tranquillity and the attention to detail are all sublime. The staff at Hippo are the most professional, generous and gracious of hosts. They were caring and helpful in all aspects of our stay and no request was too much for them. John as your manager was attentive and engaging while at the same time incredibly respectful and sensitive of our privacy. He was knowledgeable and interesting in all that he shared and we spent many hours in stimulating conversation about the bush, nature and conservation, amongst other things. He went out of his way to not only make sure we were well looked after in camp, but also on our trips into and then out of camp. Your other staff were also incredibly professional and friendly, taking care of all of our needs. I must mention that they were so very kind to the two young girls that were with us (Clara and Sofia). Major, our daily coxswain was excellent as a river and fishing guide. We felt safe in his hands and were amazed by his knowledge and expertise. All your other staff were also wonderful. Your chef and kitchen staff certainly went the extra mile and we were well fed and treated to delicious meals and treats every day. The Easter breakfast was particularly special. A huge thank you must go to them too as well as all other lodge staff, Trust in the bar included! All in all we had a fabulous time, as relaxing as it was exciting to be in the bush (in luxury it must be said).
