Shipwreck Lodge With no GPS, rolling fog obscuring the stars, and the constantly shifting sands both on shore and beneath the water, it is no wonder that over 1,000 ships throughout history have been wrecked on this windswept and beguiling coastline. It is said that the ship and the shipwreck were created on the same day, and here lies the proof - everywhere! Even with GPS and the latest technology, the most recent wreck was a Japanese trawler in 2018, the waters are that treacherous. It is the skeletons of the slowly decaying hulls of these ships that give the coast its name, along with the bleached bones of those who did not survive. For those surviving a wreck at sea, coming ashore was really just the start of their problems. The stories of the attempted rescues are as harrowing as the wrecks themselves - often leading to further wrecks. Shipwreck Lodge has taken the stories of these ships and integrated every element into the design and fabric of the lodge. Your cabin is shaped like the prow of a ship and the timbers that arch over each and every building a reminder of what awaits any error of judgment at sea. This is an up-cyclers dream. The landscape is lunar and apparently inhospitable. Hang on though, as the subterranean wells are the first thing to make this crazy location viable. Our trip coincided with the lodge’s weekly delivery of supplies - via an appropriately named distributor “We Supply Anywhere”. Everything you see and use here has either been salvaged or brought in from a long, long way away. There is no popping to the shops for a pint of milk here! The main building and cabins are incredibly well appointed with wood burning stoves, plenty of hot water and stories of the most notorious wrecks designed into your room. Dominic will greet you and during your stay you may even learn of his own family’s relationship with one of the wrecks. Sarafina, Didier (named after Drogba - obvs) help run the show with the rest of the fantastic team. Off the supply truck have rolled the freshest of ingredients from which the most creative dishes are fashioned. Perfectly sized portions contribute to less waste and there is always a choice. From here Imms and Bonnie take you on your excursions - a river-bed desert safari, quad biking and sand dune surfing. Namibia safari is about quality rather than quantity and in this incredibly challenging environment life abounds. If you are lucky you may even find hyena footprints outside your cabin in the morning. Lucky you locked the door that is! The dunes are permanently on the march and almost daily excavations are required to save parts of the lodge from becoming yet another anecdote about the Skeleton Coast! This is a hard place to get to, and like in life often the greatest rewards come from the biggest challenges. If you can find it…..don’t miss it.

Almost two hours on a bumpy road to reach “the end of the world” on the skeleton coast. On the way, you may watch the wrecks of some ships, an old reactor from a plane that came to rescue one of these ships, and also some seal colonies. Once you have arrived, you will see ten ship-wreck shaped cabins, 6 on one side, 4 on the other. Each one is well designed, two single large beds, with an excellent mattress, linens and duvet which make you feel really confortable. There is a sofa facing the ocean, and a large bathroom with a good shower . As we were in “winter”, it was a bit fresh in the morning, but there is an oven that helps you warm up the rooms. Very friendly staff, not always as efficient as expected….the food is simple (three-course menu at lunch and dinner) . Unfortunately, the wifi is quasi inexistent and only available in the common area. Do not expect to get more than your emails and if you do, you were lucky! In terms of activities, you may want to try the quad on the dunes (superb) and the great excursion to the cathedral-shaped dunes: magnificent landscape. Another option is to walk to the beach (approximately two miles away from the lodge).

Spent 2 nights for our 26th wedding anniversary. Couldn’t have asked for a more special or unique place to celebrate. The staff make this lodge extra special. Nothing is too much trouble. Requested dune quad biking and a beach lunch and everything was organised to perfection. Food is excellent quality and if you think how far everything has to be trucked in you really appreciate what is plated up at every meal. The wooden cabins are cosy and the bedding warm and snug. Be prepared for cooler temperatures as the mist rolls in and out during the day. It is a very remote location and takes some planning to get to but absolutely worth it. We flew in to Mowe Bay and the lodge organised the transfers. Possibly only two negatives however not huge in the grand scheme: WiFi only available in the main lodge area - nothing in the cabins. And due to solar heating hot water only available later in the day. Definitely recommend this unique lodge.

There are no words to describe the magic and awesomeness of this place...it is a very special experience of nature! The vastness, the ocean, the desert, the air, the wildlife impressed me deeply! This is definitely the remotest place I've ever been, but I felt the warm and friendly atmosphere at the lodge at any moment!! We arrived at Mowe Bay by airplane, were picked up and reached the lodge after a 1,5 hour drive along the ocean coast. The scenery is almost unreal and breathtaking! The lodge is very comfortable, nicely decorated and well equipped with everything you need for an unforgettable stay, stylistically perfectly adapted to the nature and environmentally friendly. The food and service were excellent, the staff very helpful and kind. Since the Hoarusib river had water after good rains, we could not do the riverbed drive. But the walk on the dunes with our absolutely competent and knowledgeable guide Bravo was not less fascinating. He explained to us a lot about the surrounding nature and animal life. The sundowner on the dunes or even on the terrace of the main building was like nothing else we´ve ever seen! We have already been in different places in Namibia, but this one was a particularly unique experience. The place is expensive, but it is worth it. The costs seem quite reasonable if you consider the remoteness of the place and the huge effort it takes to get there all the necessary supplies. And of course the price includes all services, laundry, drives, food and drinks. We greatly enjoyed every single moment! Thanks to the entire staff!

We had a 2 night stay at Shipwreck Lodge in April 2022. It is a great place to stay. We arrived by air (with a fuel stop at Swakopmund) to the nearest airstrip, and the flight there by light plane along the Skeleton Coast was stunning -- over dunes, past 2 shipwrecks and over seal colonies. A lodge guide picked us up, then it was over an hour’s drive to the lodge. Our shipwreck-shaped cabin overlooking the dunes was great, with a lovely bed and excellent bathroom; we asked for our small enclosed fireplace to be lit one night which was fun and atmospheric. There is often fog along the shoreline, so there is not always a view of the distant ocean. The food was generally good (soups a highlight), and all staff extremely friendly and efficient. Our guide Mike was fantastic, knowledgeable, informative and attentive. We had a wonderful quad-bike ride over the high dunes behind the lodge. Scenic drives were good. The stark desert scenery and dunes are well worth seeing. We also luckily saw a brown hyena and several jackals, and visited a seal colony the last morning. Learning about the hardy plants on the dunes was interesting. We had a great sundowner on the beach the first afternoon, and a beach barbecue lunch the next day was well done. This is a fairly harsh landscape but very different to other regions we visited elsewhere in Namibia, so worth seeing if you have the time.

For ratings context….we were at Okonjima, Mowani, Shipwreck, Pelican Point, and andBeyond Sossusvlei. There are no words for this place. It is a unique hotel in an otherworldly location. This is capped off by some of the best service in the world. Though its extremely hard to get to and pricey, this is a once in a lifetime type spot. Context on how amazing the service was… On the day we left, there were rivers blocking our road. Two members of the staff drove and stayed with us for over 7 hours. They waded in the river, dug a path, provided us water, and made sure we were able to get out safely. This was 20 miles OUTSIDE of their office. They could have just sent us on and left us to fend for ourselves. This was above and beyond to a level I cannot understate. Significant credit to Roumon! Important Information: The big thing to know is this place IS very hard to get to. Probably the hardest hotel in Namibia. You can either fly in on a charter plane (Which is nice, but might miss a lot of very cool and ethereal scenery and beauty), or drive in down many long dirt mining roads that may involve some adventure…. How long to stay: 2 – 3+ days. You absolutely cannot stay one day. It’s too hard to get to. If you fly, maybe 2 would be enough. If you drive, you need to stay 3. There are enough activities, and they will schedule enough for you to fill your time. Rooms (4/5): You are actually set back about a mile from the ocean, which was a little disappointing to me as the views were good, but not oceanfront. The rooms are all very nice, but you are out in the middle of nowhere. The heat/ac controls consist of a fan and a fireplace, so it might be hard to regulate. The units are unique, and maybe lack a little of the luxury feel in place of feeling like you are on a shipwreck. Its amazing, but just don’t expect perfect modern-ness. You are in the middle of nowhere. Location (5/5): You are miles from anything. Its great once you are there, but really hard to get to. They are positioned on a river also, which is pretty cool to see! Food (5/5): The food here was top notch and the staff tried to make everything perfect to your liking. Though they have limited supplies and shipments, its amazing what they could do with it. Everything from BBQing by the ocean to well plated meals. Breakfasts were also all good to order and steller. Service (6/5): Yes, 6 out of 5. It was that good. You felt like you were being served by the most organized, efficient, and friendly family in the world. They lacked pretension which made the experience even better.

A quick flight to the airstrip which is about an hour or more from the lodge. We were met by our awesome guide who drove us to the lodge which was fascinating weaving through the sand dunes and along the coast. Saw a seal colony and the sad remains of shipwrecks. Just before we arrived at the lodge we stopped for lunch which was a beachside braii (BBQ) with a chef cooking a choice of meat or fish over the fire. Once at the lodge which sits all most invisibly in the dunes away from the coast line we realised that this is a special place. Our room was cosy and comfortable with incredible views to the sea and really well thought out. The lodge itself is quirky and comfortable- excellent food and quietly efficient staff. Quad biking on the dunes was amazing - very special sundowner experience

Amazing location about as remote as one can possibly be in this world. Originally saw documentaries on the adapted African wildlife years ago and knew I needed to come here. Flew in on a charter Cessna flight and had a great 3 days here. They can hook you into Hoanib Valley Camp inland on the way out, which is also amazing. While no elephants or lions there in September, recent sightings suggest they both may be moving back in. Amazing coastline, river beds, and sand dunes unlike anything I’ve ever seen! A bit of a financial spurge but incredibly glad I made it here.
