Many destinations are unusual; very few are unique. Shipwreck Lodge truly is unique. The Namib desert is one of the most remote and desolate places in the world, yet here you will find a luxurious and astonishingly creative oasis of very comfortable accommodation, really good food, superb staff, and endless vistas over the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the rolling dunes of the desert to the east. The architecture and location are extraordinary and, bizarrely, reminiscent of the much-praised and very wonderful Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland, Canada. Each of the low slung buildings melting into the dunes really does look like a shipwreck! 2 to 3 nights is sufficient to experience the wonder of one of the most amazing places in the world. Be prepared also for one of the most competent, diligent, and just plain fun resort managers in the world in the form of Carmen and share with her her sympathy for your inevitable conclusion that one of the few valid criticisms to be made of the place is that the wooden walkways over the sand and do not extend to each of the rooms. The whole concept of the place is to be idiosyncratic, but it really doesn’t make much sense to be able to walk 90% of the way to your room without getting sand in your shoes and then inevitably arriving at your room with sandy feet! For my wife and me, and another ageing couple, who have travelled the world widely for many decades, and have no interest in risking their lives on some kind of device like that, however, rest assured that this place is for you as well. If this is your first or even second visit to Africa, there are probably other more traditional places you should visit. If, however, you have a fairly broad experience of Africa, you do absolutely owe it to yourself to experience a place you will be talking about for the rest of your life: Shipwreck Lodge.…
