The lodge is located in the famous Skeleton Coast Central Concession between the Hoarusib and Hoanib Rivers in the Skeleton Coast Park, only 45 km north of Mowe Bay. The lodge is situated on the southern bank of the Huarusib River Mouth, nestled between the dunes with a view of the Atlantic Ocean where the cold Benguela current pushes a refreshing breeze over the shipwreck shaped cabins. Self-Drive Clients Clients will enter the Skeleton Coast National Park and will be driving along a gravel road towards Möwe Bay. This is where the client’s pick-up will take please. Please note: The roads are gravel roads and are subject to the weather and wind that might affect the road conditions. Therefore, self-drive clients are advised to drive a high clearance and 4x4 vehicle, especially between Terrace Bay and Möwe Bay. The last cellphone signal for communication and petrol station will be in Terrace Bay.

    Exceptional!!!
There are no words to describe the magic and awesomeness of this place...it is a very special experience of nature! The vastness, the ocean, the desert, the air, the wildlife impressed me deeply! This is definitely the remotest place I've ever been, but I felt the warm and friendly atmosphere at the lodge at any moment!! We arrived at Mowe Bay by airplane, were picked up and reached the lodge after a 1,5 hour drive along the ocean coast. The scenery is almost unreal and breathtaking! The lodge is very comfortable, nicely decorated and well equipped with everything you need for an unforgettable stay, stylistically perfectly adapted to the nature and environmentally friendly. The food and service were excellent, the staff very helpful and kind. Since the Hoarusib river had water after good rains, we could not do the riverbed drive. But the walk on the dunes with our absolutely competent and knowledgeable guide Bravo was not less fascinating. He explained to us a lot about the surrounding nature and animal life. The sundowner on the dunes or even on the terrace of the main building was like nothing else we´ve ever seen! We have already been in different places in Namibia, but this one was a particularly unique experience. The place is expensive, but it is worth it. The costs seem quite reasonable if you consider the remoteness of the place and the huge effort it takes to get there all the necessary supplies. And of course the price includes all services, laundry, drives, food and drinks. We greatly enjoyed every single moment! Thanks to the entire staff!
Thank you for your 5 star review. Bravo is great at sharing his knowledge of the area and makes even the smallest details fascinating. We hope you can stay with us again in the future to enjoy another sundowner on the dunes.

Unique, one off property. Luxury amidst the desolate Skeleton coast.
Shipwreck lodge is an amazing concept, a beautifully designed eco friendly fully inclusive luxury lodge nestled in the heart of the desolate skeleton coast with views down to the ocean and back to the dunes. Access can be either via a 1.5 hr transfer from Mowe bay or as we did a 6 hr transfer from Huanib Valley lodge (see separate review), both being owned and managed by Natural Selection. If you are combining both properties it is heavily recommended to do the road transfer as the constantly changing scenery is one of the highlights of the trip. The transfer from Mowe bay is itself fun with a visit to a large seal colony, and wrecks of ships, a plane and the rusting ruins of tin mine machinery. As with Onduli Ridge and Huanib valley, the lodge has been built in conjunction with and on lease from the local concession so all parties have a signification stake in it, a win win for all. Shipwreck lodge amazing setting in an unforgiving environment is combined with amazing architecture and style with every item thought through carefully including a captains log in each room explaining the area, lodge and facilities. Whilst all activities are very weather dependent they will leave you with unforgettable memories . The quad bike up to the dunes, (No prior expertise required) is not to be missed nor the brai lunch by the sea or the sunset GnT. If you do not do the Huanib valley transfer then a game drive through the adjacent Hoarusib river valley is a must. Meals are also a highlight but it is hard to escape the amazing setting. A special thanks to all the staff but particularly to our guide, Bodo who helped ensure an unforgettable experience

    Unbelievably great place
This is a totally unique experience - a hotel in the middle of nowhere, amid the desert. The road here from a small airport takes about 1 hour 20 minutes and on the way there isn’t a single hint of human life. More amazing it is to see this chic lodge hotel here. Construction of the hotel reminds of a shipwreck but inside it is clever eco luxury. It is a 5 star level service and comfort. 10 separate lodges with shower, spacious rooms, all amenities you might need. I don’t often meet this kind of comfort in chic hotels in top locations. If you ever a get a chance to visit it - try to do it. Also the ocean here is amazing. Wild and beautiful. It takes 10-15 minutes to drive from the hotel to the beach and the hotel offers this service free of charge.
Thank you for taking the time to review us, we are delighted to see how much you enjoyed your experience at Shipwreck Lodge. We hope you will visit us again soon.

It was really professional and lovely. I would highly recommend to friends and family. Even though the road to Shipwreck is rough, it is good that you have drivers who know how to drive to come get us. They are very trustworthy and know what they are doing. The food was amazing.

Mostly an adult destination, but we visited with extended family including our 2 boys, ages 11 and 16 and they were very welcome. Everything is wonderful : the adorable but spacious ship rooms that are impeccably clean despite being surrounded by sand ( I do agree with the other reviewer that the boardwalk should extend to the room ), the extremely attentive staff, the fabulous food they are serving in the middle of nowhere and no shortage of snacks/ drinks. Homemade lemonade was especially nice. Lounge area is warm and inviting, but do not rely on the WI-FI here. Loved the fireplace and bush babies as nights are chilly in June. Nice hot showers! The activities were so much fun: seals and shipwrecks on the way to the lodge from Mowe bay pickup point, which is very slow and bumpy. Sand boarding and ATVs in what felt like our own private dunes, braii lunch in riverbed, “ fog downers” on the beach. We even got to see a brown hyena thanks to our wonderful guide Balak. We loved every aspect and feel that it was worth the effort and splurge!

Shipwreck Lodge is a sister lodge to Hoanib Valley Camp. Many people visit both, as did we. The cabins look like mini shipwrecks. They have stoves in your room which the staff will light for you on those cold nights. You can also request a bush baby (hot water bottle) for your bed. It’s super cozy! I loved our little patio that faced the ocean - and also the day bed with a selection of magazines about Namibia. In the book describing the hotel’s amenities, they have a description of the MV Dunedin Star wreck which happened off the Skeleton Coast in 1942. (We unfortunately didn’t get to see the wreckage but we WERE chased by a lioness twice in our safari vehicle which was thankfully closed in! Boro our guide kept us quite safe!) We also got to ride quad bikes on the dunes and see the sunset which was an amazing experience! We enjoyed our ride through the river bed and we’re actually surprised at the amount of greenery. Seeing the beautiful lichens made for an intriguing view of a flora of a different type on the Skeleton Coast. One afternoon we hiked to the beach where the lodge staff had prepared a braai for us in a beautiful setting. The lodge is set in a very fragile environment, the Skeleton Coast. So unique and hauntingly beautiful.

This is one of the most unique places we've ever been! The lodge and the views are truly breathtaking. The staff and guides were just a joy to be around, and Bodo and Immes taught us so much about Skeleton Coast. The interiors are impeccably designed, and we really enjoyed just exploring all of the little design details of the lodge. Highly recommend the sandboarding!

Was met at South end and escorted in by guide Imms who showed us several wrecks and had great stories on the area and it’s wrecks Straight to a wonderful lunch braiid on the beach. Afternoon at leisure with some braving fishing which proved successful Morning on dunes on 4W bikes with amazing coverage of the area supported by great views and a wonderful experience. For somewhere so remote this is spectacular all round - hot fire in comfortable rooms, great food, well above service delivery, and a fantastic setting. Well done to Carmen on managing an amazing group of people and keeping the sand out of our rooms!

A spectacular lodge in the middle of nowhere. The design of the lodge is amazing! And congratulations to the chef for producing such delicious food in such a remote location. There is not much to “do” at Shipwreck Lodge, and the weather, with the wind and fog can be challenging, so be prepared. The Skeleton Coast is not for everyone – it is more for the safari aficionado who has already travelled and wants that unique, once in a lifetime experience. A very big thank to guide Bravo who went the extra mile to look after us, and escorted us in our vehicle on our way in from Puros and departure via Mowe Bay.

Many destinations are unusual; very few are unique. Shipwreck Lodge truly is unique. The Namib desert is one of the most remote and desolate places in the world, yet here you will find a luxurious and astonishingly creative oasis of very comfortable accommodation, really good food, superb staff, and endless vistas over the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the rolling dunes of the desert to the east. The architecture and location are extraordinary and, bizarrely, reminiscent of the much-praised and very wonderful Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland, Canada. Each of the low slung buildings melting into the dunes really does look like a shipwreck! 2 to 3 nights is sufficient to experience the wonder of one of the most amazing places in the world. Be prepared, however, for a bumpy one and a half to two hour ride from the airstrip to the Inn, and the fact that there is no cell phone service, and the Wi-Fi is not entirely reliable. Be prepared also for one of the most competent, diligent, and just plain fun resort managers in the world in the form of Carmen and share with her her sympathy for your inevitable conclusion that one of the few valid criticisms to be made of the place is that the wooden walkways over the sand and do not extend to each of the rooms. The whole concept of the place is to be idiosyncratic, but it really doesn’t make much sense to be able to walk 90% of the way to your room without getting sand in your shoes and then inevitably arriving at your room with sandy feet! They do advertise the availability of ATVs, and this would probably be one of the best places in the world for this. For my wife and me, and another ageing couple, who have travelled the world widely for many decades, and have no interest in risking their lives on some kind of device like that, however, rest assured that this place is for you as well. If this is your first or even second visit to Africa, there are probably other more traditional places you should visit. If, however, you have a fairly broad experience of Africa, you do absolutely owe it to yourself to experience a place you will be talking about for the rest of your life: Shipwreck Lodge.

The above combined is the attraction here. We found the drive from Terrace bay to Mowe bay little tiring but not difficult in any way. I recommend arriving at 15, as tours are organised in the morning about 930-1230, and sun downers 18 or later in December when we visited. We were as a couple organized in groups of 7 persons when we arrived which we did the tours with. Just to note that it isn’t a place where you choose tours individually. Looking at different couples and larger groups when we were there the same applied. First day atv and sandboarding. They only have 5 atvs so you may need to go in 2 groups. Sandboarding is great fun but perhaps less interesting and efficient to wait while each person is doing their race snd being collected. The second day we did a nice drive to spot desert elephants. Judging by the large number of excrements you should have a fair chance of seeing them. We did. The guides are all around guides which do a bit of everything. If you want a specialist you should bring one. One pair did and it adds a lot. A great plus was that they had fine wines of older vintages, which i enjoyed very much. Dinner at your lodge i can definitely recommend. Beautiful and romantic. I would also emphasize Mariana who watch over your car and cleans it while you are away. She just oozes of positivism and takes responsibility. Very good with her as the first person you meet.

Wanted to stay at this extraordinary out of the way, ends of the earth, lodge on Skeleton Coast when I first read about it a few years ago. Booked as part of a 50th birthday trip to Namibia which was postponed and delayed twice because of the pandemic. Despite the lengthy drive, it didn’t disappoint. Every little detail was perfect. The staff, our guide, the quality of the food (a real achievement when you consider just how remote it is), the wine, the activities, the lodges themselves. This isn’t cheap but it’s a once in a lifetime stay - so just do it! Big thanks to Boro, our guide for our three day stay. We felt like so much more than hotel guests such is the small and intimate nature of Shipwreck Lodge. We spent evenings chatting to Christian, the manager, and other guests - hello to Lisa and Natasha from Switzerland if you’re reading this - over a glass of wine or two after dinner. It felt just like you are part of the family. The lodges cosy and perfect with stunning views towards the coastline. In the evening, while you have dinner, the wood burners are lit to keep you warm when you return to your room (We went in august so their winter) The shipwrecks along the coast are a must see. The seal colony too. All of it adds up to a feeling of remoteness I’ve not felt before. The activities are all wonderful. Lunch at the beach, beside the roaring Atlantic Ocean, while you eat restaurant quality food with anything you choose to drink. The quad biking was great - as a mum in her (now) 50s I was half terrified and half thrilled as we drove around the extraordinary sand dunes which towered above the coast line. My two teenage boys 18 and 16 had no such worries. Go, you won’t regret it.
