The lodge is located in the famous Skeleton Coast Central Concession between the Hoarusib and Hoanib Rivers in the Skeleton Coast Park, only 45 km north of Mowe Bay. The lodge is situated on the southern bank of the Huarusib River Mouth, nestled between the dunes with a view of the Atlantic Ocean where the cold Benguela current pushes a refreshing breeze over the shipwreck shaped cabins. Please note: The roads are gravel roads and are subject to the weather and wind that might affect the road conditions. Since it opened a few years ago there has been a lot of hype and social media activity around this lodge. It sets a high bar, which is easily cleared, and we greatly enjoyed our "landscape safari." We arrived on the Skeleton Coast after a 90 minute flight from Windhoek. We were picked up at the airstrip and our first stop was an amazing beach with hundreds of lounging seals. I missed it, but my wife saw a humpback whale fully breach. We then drove to the lodge, passing some abandoned mining equipment (not worth going out of the way for, but a nice bit of history) and stayed 2 nights. The ship-inspired individual cabins are both visually stunning and comfortable. The main highlight of this lodge is the dessert landscape (there is little wildlife around). There are massive dunes which we experienced on 4-wheelers and dune-boarding. Plus, we had an amazing seaside lunch (it's worth the mile walk to get there). Unlike a typical safari where you are up-early tracking game, this is a more relaxed experience enjoying the landscape. On the last day we drove to Hoanib Valley camp. We tracked and saw one of the few local lions on the way there. We also stopped at some interesting rock formations. We booked this trip with ATR Safari. They are knowledgeable, flexible, and helped us navigate evolving covid restrictions. I recommend them highly.

Wow, I wish I could give more than five points. We've stayed for two nights in the lodge. We'll never forget our stay there. Is was fantastic and something unique. The lodge is around one kilometer away from the sea in the dessert. The architecture of the lodge is very special and unique. Our bungalow was very beautiful with a amazing view to the dessert. The staff was very friendly. Also the food was very delicious. Don't miss a Quad Bike Tour in the sand dunes! Thanks to all of the staff for giving us such a beautiful an unforgetable stay :-)

I’ve travelled all over the world and stayed in everything from 1 star to 5 star hotels/lodges. This lodge equals the best service that I’ve received in my life, and I’m comparing it to hotels like the Oriental in Bangkok! That’s pretty darn good for a place that’s so hard to get to and that is truly in the middle of nowhere. Rouen the manager, was as sharp as they come and he took care of a few dilemmas that faced us regarding our scheduling etc. with absolute ease. You never had to mention anything more than once and it was done with speed and efficiency - all in a place where the internet is practically nonexistent and the only communication to the outside world is via satellite phone (which thank goodness the lodge has!). Rouen helped us change our whole itinerary (so that we could stay an extra night), re-route us to take a shorter route to Hoanib Valley Camp, with escort, bring our car up from Mowe bay, fill it with gas, and open our safe that we locked accidentally. I fear that we may have been irritating guests due to all of these changes, but you would never know if we were from the staffs perfect demeanor of hospitality. Shimi, our guide was a total delight, and he really went above and beyond to keep us smiling. Even refereeing a quad bike race between my son and myself over the endless and beautiful dunes which have probably never seen a human footprint. He indulged our whims of beach rock and diamond hunting, and in every way kept us entertained always with a broad smile on his face. Our beach lunch day was perfect. A delightful white table clothed lunch and BBQ on a huge beach (everything in Namibia is huge), with not a soul in sight. Again, not difficult in Namibia. We were lucky enought to see two lionesses feasting on an Oryx on the first evening we were there. Spectacular. The rooms - excellent sheets and comfy beds, well appointed in general. Be warned however, that the ride to shipwreck lodge from Swakopmund is long and VERY bumpy, and if you’re not game for that, do the fly in option instead. We extended our stay to 3 nights because we’d done so much driving in general and this was a particularly difficult stretch. But even if you’re flying in, I would recommend 3 nights. The changes in weather patterns are in themselves so interesting that you can sit on the deck all day and watch the fog rolling in or out. Quite extraordinary. Quad biking is formidable here. Don’t waste your time doing it in Swakopmund if you’re planning on heading here. The dunes go on as far as the eye can see and you can tool around everywhere with no-one else around. We have stars in our eyes…

Shipwreck was 3 nights well spent! What an amazing concept to have an entire lodge constructed on a sand dune. All the staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. You never go hungry as you are fed regularly with delicious meals. Activites are great and exploring the magificent Hoarusib Riverbed to see roaring dunes, springs amongst the narrow gorges and delicate clay castle formations were absolutely breath-taking. The beach was wonderfully desolate and we even some some antelopes drinking from freshwater springs right next to the ocean. At the end of the day, to retreat to your ultra-comfortable room and having a nice hot solar-heated shower after exploring the area, you flop down into your comfortable bed for the best sleep ever! Thanks all staff at Shipwreck for an unforgetable experience!

Any attempt to describe Shipwreck Lodge will be mostly futile, but I will do my best! Just saying this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience isn’t enough to cover it all, this is something you can’t get anywhere else and is worth every penny. The sound of the waves crashing on the beach as you dine just in front, quad biking over untouched dunes, just being in one of the most desolate places on earth and just letting that soak in - incredible. The rooms are understated luxury at its best; nothing gaudy or tacky & everything to remind you of where you are. A true credit to Namibia
