The place was wonderful - mainly because of the people staying and living there. I felt like within a hippie community with nice and open chats together, lots of fun during New Year while staying nearly a week there. The bar and restaurant is nice, both with great views over the lake. The dorm is okay and its terrace opens views to the lake as well as the kompost toilet does. Good to relax, for getting grounded, meeting nice people, having fun, for snorkeling in the lake or kayaking. Also tours are offered. Warmly recommended...
The best place in Malawi we have stayed in two months by far. Run by the most awesome crew of Josie, Holly, Stefan and their team, they make such welcoming, fun, and hospitable hosts. We have loved our time here so much, the food is delicious, the local staff are such good kind people, great access to the lake via a private beach. Butterfly is also such a force for good in the community with so many great projects. We volunteered at the primary school for 5 weeks which was so rewarding and such a great insight into local life . Couldn’t rate it higher!
The place is beautiful but the food was subpar and they kicked us out of a room they gave us because they didn't check the reservations. The people were very nice though. Recommend planning on eating outside if you are to visit.
Butterfly space is the only place I would ever stay in Nkhata Bay! The lodge has one of the best views of the lake, friendly staff and a community atmosphere. It has recently been renovated, and the kooky, eco-friendly. Permaculture based design make it unlike anywhere else I have stayed in Malawi. I stayed in the Lakeview room, which has a self contained shower and toilet, and an amazing view over the lake! It was the perfect spot for a relaxing, romantic get away. But what makes Butterfly so special is the people. Everyone that works there goes an extra mile to make you feel at home. Being a non-for profit lodge, the local community is central to everything Butterfly does- and it shows. There is a community run kitchen, and the lodge works with a locally owned kayak company and massage parlour. If I had more time, I would definitely volunteer here and get involved in some of their projects! I really could not recommend Butterfly space more, I have been coming regularly since 2017.…
I first went to Butterfly in 2014 and have been a regular visitor ever since. Its the best place to go and just chill, such easy vibes. The bar area is right on the lake with a big coconut tree over it, its a real tropical paradise! I love the owners, the staff and the whole ethos! You are made to feel at home instantly. Visitors should make sure they have the right expectations - there are only compost toilets but that is part of the experience and is all part of ensuring there is a minimal impact on the beautiful environment.
With some newly renovated rooms, this gem in Nkhata Bay is truly a beautiful experience. We stayed in the Lake View chalet which was spacious, clean, well decorated and had a beautiful balcony and view. We enjoyed the self contained composting toilets and warm showers. The restaurant is fantastic as well with sweeping views across the lake. And the long deck by the bar is a great place to chill. The water is easy to access, private and not over crowded so plenty of space to swim! The lodge was super flexible with our odd hours of arrival due to the Ilala ferry and helped with our car. Thanks Butterfly for the great service and visit!
Big shout to Stephan and Holly who are super friendly and will go out of their way to make sure you're looked after. My room was comfortable with a nice balcony directly overlooking the lake. Food was good and I had access to hot showers. 👍 Bonus! I'd also like to mention the amazing work Butterfly Space lodge does in and around the community. From permaculture projects to Raspberry pie initiatives. It's really inspiring stuff. If you're looking for a place to stay lake side with a nice atmosphere and lovely people who are actually trying to making a difference this should be your number 1 choice of accomodation in Nkhata bay. Thanks guys 🙌
Butterfly Space is truly fantastic! On the shore of Lake Malawi. Check their website to see all the amazing things they do and opportunities for volunteers. Accommodation is more than adequate and better than most backpacker lodges. Food is fabulous, as are the people! Don't miss the boat trip to see the fish eagles!
The staff at butterfly space is the kindest people of Malawi. The surroundings are perfect, and lots of opportunities to volunteer. The deck by the Lake is amazing and the atmosphere offers great opportunities to meet other travellers. Rats are not so nice, though
Butterfly Lodge is the best of the three lodges we've visited in Nkhata Bay. Other places are perhaps less basic, but they often have rows of concrete buildings spoiling the environment and the view. All bugalows at Butterfly instead are made in wood and they are distant from each other, with stunning views on the lake. I would not recommend staying here with children perhaps, as some of the balconies overlooking the lake have no railing around them, but the place is very romantic for couples and fun for friends and lonely travellers, with a lovely bar (the nicest we've seen) right by the lake with live music once a week and a pool table. The food is great, takes a while to make because it is prepared on a coal stove, but worth the wait! The staff is lovely and helpful, involved in a number of community projects, and the atmosphere is very chilled. Moreover, the place has a tiny sand beach to relax and read (which other places do not have) and kayaks available for the guests. If you're not too fussy Butterfly is perfect!…
