Fabulous stay at Kombo beach. First time in the Gambia for us and we absolutely loved it. We read negative reviews so were slightly worried (but if you are expecting European hotels, stay in Europe…) and everything was fantastic. Food was lovely, and there are multiple restaurants and bars within walking distance. Always multiple sun beds available on both the beach and round the pool. Rooms are slightly tired but always spotlessly clean, as is the rest of the hotel. Staff are brilliant, and the local tour guides are fantastic, we used Lams tours and Kevin who was outside the hotel and they both were brilliant and go above and beyond for us. Some of the locals will be extremely grateful for any clothes they can bring back to their villages, so bring clothes and leave them! Cannot fault this stay at all. At 150 dalasi for a beer, absolutely cannot complain …
We have been to visit the kombo beach many times over the years and it is a hotel - however is now very worn and in much need of an upgrade. Staff are helpful and friendly and it is lovely and clean. Beds at the pool and beach always available. Food was tasty, however the waiting time at dinner could be lengthy
Having just returned from the Gambia. Not my first time to the Gambia. Airport could not be more chaotic 4 flights all at same time arriving at small airport ! Get on the transfer coach it was old and broke down leaving us standing road side for replacement which took approx one and a half hours to arrive. No food available when eventually arrive. The hotel is need of a serious up grade. We had our toilet seat looked at four times as it was loose and dangerous to sit on, eventually giving up !The lights in bathroom went bang when turned on !! Locks to room loose and difficult to lock/unlock. Had to pay to use the safe !! Food was OK, breakfast was manic at times and it was only 30% capacity god knows what it wouldof been full capacity ! On the plus side staff friendly if always looking for a tip ! Appreciate it is an impoverished country. Beach and sunshine made it worth while 🌞😎🏖. On leaving delayed after boarding plane due to wrong luggage loaded !! Pleased to e hoe evenings not sunny 🥶…
We didn't stay here but have visited here on previous holidays for dinner which used to be good. This year we returned for dinner. Deeply disappointed, we ordered chicken lemon and herb and I was given fish of the day. When it was brought to our table I sent it away as it was wrong but my husband got his chicken. It came back a second time. I sent it back then the head waiter came over to explain the orders had got mixed up with another table who had then eaten what they were given so I had to wait another 20min for mine to arrive. When it did it was inedible probably because the chicken had been microwaved to spead up the process but it was dry, tough and horrible. I did complain at the time but too late as our dinner was ruined. Won't be going back next time we are at Kotu beach.…
We are just back from Kombo beach hotel and we cannot rate this hotel and its staff highly enough. We read some bad reviews before we went and felt slightly concerned but we had no need to worry as everything was great. Happy, helpful, smiling staff, excellent breakfast choices, lovely food in the restaurants, good entertainment if you don’t want to venture out and the most beautiful stretch of beach. Yes, admittedly the rooms are quite tired (but very clean) but like lots of places, they are still “recovering” from the covid pandemic and so we need to be mindful of that. We embraced the Gambian way of life, and the beautiful people. Do venture out of the hotel, get to know the beach vendors, especially the fruit ladies and fresh fruit vendors - absolutely delicious. Use the locals for your tours and taxis; they are so reliable and friendly. If the locals are too much then they will leave you alone if you politely tell them “No thanks”. It was our first time in the gambia but it certainly won’t be our last and we will definitely return to Kombo beach hotel! …
4 days out of 7 we had cold water it was shocking and the breakfast scrambled egg was cold and wasn’t bothered the room we had must have been infested as each morning I was covered more and more with bites we sprayed the room lots of times but it was still bad I’m really disappointed with this hotel this time was we have stayed here before and it was really nice but this time has really upset me and will never stay again the staff are lovely too
Stays at this hotel were included in a specialist tour holiday. Previous reviews suggested it was one of the better places in a fairly poor bunch in this part of Gambia. My own experience after two stays of 7 and 3 days during the trip, suggest it is pretty poor and in no circumstance would I go there again. There are a few good points. It is right on the beach, though if you go on it you will get the usual traders and others pestering you every few minutes. The grounds and pool are pleasant but most of the guest rooms are affected by noise from the evening entertainment area. The downsides are many, indeed too numerous to describe here. The hotel is rated 4-star but is worth three at best and the rooms are more like 2-star. They are a good size but very basic, bordering on dilapidated. The shower was above the bathtub and there was no bath mat or hi-grip surface, which would make it awkward for less agile guests. The bathroom door was warped so did not close properly. The flushing of the toilet was poor even when the water supply was working. In the morning during the first stay of the trip, flow of water for a shower had an equal chance of being barely adequate, a trickle, or nothing whatsoever. The experience of others in our group and complaints overheard at reception suggested this affected most or all of the complex. Three times I had to start the day with just a brief rinse of my face and hands with bottled water. The tiny tubes of toiletries were exhausted after two days and not replaced. Both sliding doors of the wardrobe would always slide to one end. Curtains had paint stains, lampshades were loose and ill-fitting and lighting was generally very dim. The only power sockets in the bedroom were at floor level under the desk, requiring a knees-and-elbows crawl. The main restaurants offer a wide range of dishes in many styles, but perhaps that was part of the problem with them. While a few things - soups and African-style dishes - were quite good, most were fair to poor and some such as pizzas, paninis and some seafood dishes were just terrible. Although some staff seemed to be efficient, generally service was slow, disorganised and occasionally close to rude, with long waits, orders for whole tables having to be repeated and incorrect dishes frequently delivered. I could write more but would rather just forget the place and suggest readers do the same! P.S. Those planning to visit the coast of Gambia for the first time should make themselves aware of what the area outside the "strip" of coastal tourist hotels is like. To get anywhere more than a couple of km away requires a traverse of sprawling urbanised areas with atrocious traffic congestion, compounded by dusty roads and traffic fumes from ill-maintained vehicles. Sadly, the effects of severe poverty are to be widely seen with abundant litter, piles of rubbish and abundant mess of various sorts along all main roads as well as the dirt-track side streets. If you do decide to go, be aware of this if booking excursions as the first 10km of any journey - and the return - is likely to take at least an hour each way. You may wish to consider that there are plenty of destinations that have warmth and sunshine during the European winter and among such destinations Gambia is, in my opinion, rock bottom. Nothing would persuade me to visit again. …
We stayed for over a week in the hotel. The rooms were kept clean perfectly, in case of questions the staff acts promptly. The staff is friendly and polite. the breakfast buffet is complete. The pool, the (secure) beach, life music, all with all a very pleasant place to be.
Been going to The Gambia for 16 years and staying at Kombo Beach Hotel for most of those years. During that time we have seen the hotel turn from a vibrant fun filled location to a disgrace of a hotel that needs a complete strip out and refurb before we set foot in their again. 2 weeks with no hot water. Changed rooms because no hot water or aircon. Bathroom light not working. Plug in sink not working. Electric sockets on walls loose and dangerous. New room - Aircon now ok but still no hot water. Reception ignore the phone because they know its going to be another complaint and don't want to deal with it. Told that the boiler is only switched on to allow guests to shower between 5.30 & 7.00pm, but no hot water at 6.30pm. Ended being shown into hotel staff room because they have an electric shower. So staff can have a shower at any hour of the day but guests can only shower between 5.00pm & 7.30pm (well not even then in reality). Every year there is less and less. Breakfast used to be a great experience, especially the egg station. I understand that there is a threatened egg shortage, but to then water down the premixed omelette gunk so that it's now a tasteless rubberised mess!!! This is our last visit to Kombo Beach Hotel and we seriously advise everyone else to steer well clear. Try African Queen, that's much better.…
We stayed at kombo beach for our first trip to Gambia. The staff at the hotel are extremely friendly and welcoming. The night Manager Alpha is above and beyond helpful, he regularly asks all the guest if they are ok and makes us feel that nothing is a problem for him. Total asset to this hotel. The hotel has an amazing beach with great staff throughout. The food is so good with so much choice and the night entertainment is exceptional. My two moans are; The hotel charges you to use the safe in your room if you have a standard room aswell as renting a kettle. This should be standard to have these facilities in your room at no extra cost. The massage ladies on the beach are amazing we have had one daily throughout our trip. Highly recommend the full body massage using local shea butter. All the people working on the beach are so friendly and entertaining. I can sincerely recommend to anyone. …
