If you like staying at historic B&B’s, especially those with a history behind them, you’ll love the Benn Conger Inn in Groton NY. It was built in 1921 as the residence for Benn Conger, a businessman (he was president of a typewriter company that eventually became Smith Corona) and a New York State representative and state senator in the early 20th century. The residence later served as an occasional hideout for the gangster Dutch Schultz. His favorite room is now the Dutchman Suite, where we stayed. It’s spacious and well-appointed, with a four-poster bed and plenty of closet space. There are tales that Schutz’s ghost haunts the Inn, but if so, he didn’t bother us. Shelley Newman is the innkeeper. She warmly greeted us on our arrival, and was always available with information. She keeps the Inn spotless. Breakfasts consist of bread and muffins, house-baked muffins and scones, fresh fruit, and boxed cereals. There also are made-to-order eggs, omelets, or French toast, made by Shelley or the manager, Drew Clare. We enjoyed our stay very much, Highly recommended.

A hidden gem. It was a wonderful experience staying at the Ben Conger Inn. Drew, the manager is amazing and Shelly, the innkeeper is such a lovely lady. The inn is beautiful and very clean. They did an amazing job restoring the inn. The breakfast was very good and the overall experience was second to none. We will be back.

My family and I were visiting the area for college acceptance tours. We wanted to stay in a unique B&B nearby. The Benn Conger Inn is the perfect place to stay. Our room had been newly renovated and was absolutely beautiful. This was my few having my coffee overlooking the grounds. Breakfast the next morning was so delicious. Our favorite was the cinnamin french toast. I highly recommend this Inn if you want to stay close enough to Ithaca for Cornell University and Ithaca College. It was a wonderful memory and we would definitely stay there again.

We loved this Inn. I was traveling with my 18 year old son and booked the suite. It was perfect. The rooms were beautiful, had lots of natural light, and the beds were really comfortable. Drew and the Innkeeper were so friendly and helpful. The breakfast was delicious.

My daughter and I had a great stay at the Inn! Drew arranged my arrival to be sure I'd be able to get in if I was late. He and Shelly run the Inn on their own. My daughter lives in Groton but doesn't have space for me to stay with her - so we bunked together in the Dutchman Suite, which is fabulous! The decor is full on 1950s elegance, with an original bathroom with some updated tile in the bath/shower. This is a multi-room, multi-closet, multi-nook suite. There is a king size bed with an extra-firm mattress (think Rock of Gibraltar firm), a fold-out couch, and we found a cot in the walk-in closet, too. There is a little nook across from the closet that might fit the cot (?). The huge bath has a soaking tub, sink and plenty of space to put away toiletries and to change clothes. Note that this is an old house and the original plaster and tile in the bathroom is cracked in spots, to be expected as the house has no doubt settled over the years. Down a short hall within the suite (with another shelved closet) is a private toilet in its own room. There was a large TV with Roku device, free internet (that worked well in our room), and sufficient lighting. There is one multi-charger/multi-plug on one bedside table. The whole space is just gorgeous. The house looks to have central heating, but there was also an in-room wall mounted heater in use for the winter (guessing so that the whole house heat can be conserved when only one or a few rooms are in use). We asked for an extra cozy throw and Drew found one for us right away. We were very comfortable. This suite is in the main building, which was fully decorated for Christmas. The public rooms include the entrance hall, a sitting room, a suite of dining rooms (including sunrooms that were closed in the winter), and another sitting area on the second floor landing. We were the only guests on one night, and Shelly stayed overnight in the Inn while we were there. The room rate included a full breakfast - and I mean full, with bagels and breads, eggs, French toast, yogurt, muffins, granola, fruit, juices, ice water, coffee/tea/hot cocoa and even candy for the road. Drew or Shelly do the cooking, too! We decided to do take-out one night for dinner and Shelly even put out china and silverware for us in the dining area to enjoy our dinner. One night there was a private holiday party downstairs - be aware that this is a house, not a hotel, and sounds will carry, if that is a problem for you. We found it festive and not an issue at all. There is a private parking lot next to the Inn. Groton is a very small village, but there is a convenient gas station with Dunk's, and my daughter recommends the local Chinese restaurant. It's about 20 min to Ithaca or Cortland and about an hour to Binghamton or Owego. Seneca Falls was about 40 min away, and many options for hiking and nature - Montezuma Refuge, Taughannock Falls, and more.

I was looking for a place to stay in the Finger Lakes that was more special than a typical hotel or motel, but not as much of a wildcard as an Airbnb and the Benn Conger was exactly it. The Inn has 10 total rooms split between two separate houses which are right next to each other. Each room is uniquely decorated and the website does a great job at describing the size and amenities in each room while booking. Our room (Smith Corona) had charm and a historic feel without lacking any modern comforts or conveniences (jetted tub, fireplace, cool AC, wifi, Keurig, large balcony). The staff made us feel so welcome and offered suggestions of things to do and set out a fire pit for everyone to enjoy on Saturday evening. Breakfast, included and offered in “Benn’s House” is a real treat. Groton itself is a very small town (a couple of pizza places, diner, a handy 24 hour Speedway), but it was a good jumping-off location and we were able to visit downtown Ithaca and Watkins Glen and visit parks, wineries, and breweries all in one weekend. Look no further for a beautiful, quiet, relaxing destination. The staff take great care to make your stay easy and enjoyable.

This inn consists of two separate houses. We did not stay in the main house, but did enjoy breakfast there. Even before we arrived, the communication with Drew was excellent. Upon arrival we were given a very brief family history and shown to our beautiful suite. It was immaculate! The details in the room are lovely. Retro style Mini-fridge and microwave are adorable. Coffeemaker was appreciated the next morning as we watched for deer from our veranda. Breakfast served by Russ was delicious. Truly, it would be hard to find something to complain about here. We had originally thought to stay in Ithaca….so glad we chose to stay at this lovely inn.
