Sound View Greenport offers a picturesque beachfront location that guests commonly laud, providing stunning water views and easy access to local attractions. However, some travelers feel that the hotel's rates don't match its value due to excessive fees. Cleanliness is generally upheld, yet requests for housekeeping are sometimes necessary. While the rooms offer comfort and views, critiques include poor soundproofing and dated aesthetics. The atmosphere is a mix of praise for the ocean vistas and piano bar ambiance against a backdrop of basic room decor. Amenities and service quality appear to fluctuate, with both commendations for the staff's friendliness and criticisms for inconsistency.

Despite bad weather, I loved my stay at Sound View!! I went with my husband and we stayed in the 2bdrm which was newly renovated, huge and gorgeous! The closets were giant and all spaces (except the 2nd bdrm which I used as a dressing room) had views of the sound. The 1 and 2 bdrm suites are in the bldg farthest from the restaurant and lobby, right above Low Tide Bar and next to the pool (though the entrance to the pool is on the other side). Next time, I may try a one room suite bc that bldg was more conveniently located to the beach, restaurant and pool. I loved the food but note that there aren’t many menu options. We did their to go breakfast every morning which was a nice snack - granola, yogurt, mini muffins, coffe, OJ and hard boiled eggs. The pool is huge with stunning views of the sound. If you order food at the pool, you are charged a 20% room service fee FYI. Sunsets are to die for - reserve a seat at Low Tide bar to watch! The staff are all so friendly and helpful! Housekeeping didn’t clean our rooms (I’m thinking bc of covid) but they did ask if we needed anything like towels, coffee, lotion, etc. The location is a drive to town and uber did not work for us, we used a local car service company - Classy Cab. Can’t wait to go back!!

Customer Service:
During check in we presented our AAA card because the website says present your AAA card during check in and receive 15% off your stay. The lady who checked us in didn’t seem to know how to apply the discount so she told us to bring it back when we check out. So during check out we presented our card and they would not acknowledge it, they said it needed to be done at check in. So we explained that we tried and they still wouldn’t acknowledge it. That alone was very poor customer service

Room:
Our room was clean and modern. Seems
Recently updated. Being that I do travel a lot I have seen what other hotels and motels have doing to take Covid safety and sanitation protocols. Even though the room was cleaned, I did not see anything in baggies with a sticker or marking saying it has been sanitized. I did find some hair in a towel, so of course we got a fresh new set to be safe.

Beach and Pool:
The beach and pool furniture seemed a little outdated and some were cracked.

Breakfast:
Their complimentary breakfast was typical continental. Small cakes (very small), muffins, fruit and yogurt. For the price you pay (we paid $540 for one night on a Wednesday) they could at least make breakfast a step up from a typical continental, make us think we got something “special” for the price of their nightly rate.

Honestly you are paying for the view and that’s it. Every room has access to the outdoor deck and the ocean is right there literally. Nothing too special about this place. We did not eat at their restaurant as they were fully booked the entire night. Instead we ate at Jedediah Hawkins in Jamesport (I think), which I highly recommend. Food and ambiance was top notch there.

My husband and I spent four nights here in July. We love the North Fork and with travel being so limited right now, we were looking for something we could easily drive to, have a nice view and feel safe. First, this property boasts a lot of "COVID procedures" on their website that I can honestly say did not exist. There is no contactless check-in and you cannot access your room with a digital key. We needed to go to the front desk and have actual key cards. They absolutely do not wipe down pool/beach chairs in between use. One front desk clerk told me they do take reservations for the pool/beach chairs and another said they did not. Even if they do, there is no system and nobody is checking. While we are on this topic, just bring your own beach chairs and umbrella. The beach furniture is atrocious. Its heavy and hard to move around. The loungers do not incline and are really low to the ground. Trust me, bring your own. Also, bring water shoes. It's almost impossible to walk on the beach or in the water barefoot.

They have done a decent job remodeling the rooms (we were in a junior suite with semi private balcony). The view is beautiful. But overall, the property is just ok. Nothing special for over $600 p/night, and that is with me understanding that it is peak season and it is a property right on the water.

I think what I disliked most about this property was the lack of management presence and oversight. When spending this kind of money, and in the era of Covid and wanting to feel safe, nobody was there monitoring things. For instance, there were absolutely people on the "supposedly private" beach who were not staying at the hotel. They basically have young teenagers sitting by the towels and perhaps they are supposed to ask for a room number, but they do not. Also, the new beach bar is very pretty and has the opportunity to have a great vibe, but twice there were guests who brought their own bluetooth speaker and were blasting music (and one of the times the bar had their own one man band entertainment and these guests still blasted their music over the poor singer!). There were also guests who would reserve the beach bar chairs, but have their own drinks and food in a cooler - that's like making a reservation at a restaurant and bringing your own food and drink. So, it's 'inmates running the asylum' here.

Overall, we had a decent stay and we love the North Fork region, so we made the best of our experience. I would likely not return to this property.

Went to this hotel twice in July and August. I paid over $700 a night for the 1st stay and over $500 a night for the 2nd stay. What you’re paying for at Sound View is the beachfront property, view and location — however, the rooms and beach are dirty (1st time: socks left over from previous guest were on the floor, beach chairs were ripped and dirty; 2nd time: garbage on the beach, multiple public hairs found in the bed linens — how good and thorough is their covid cleaning policy? the staff are apathetic or rude, and the last time we went - we weren’t allow to check in until more than 30 min after check in time due to “room being inspected” (guess they didn’t find those pubic hairs). Front desk person was apathetically apologetic and could have offered us a cocktail or something on the house while we waited to be checked in late into our $500++ night room.

This hotel could have potential, but they’re going to need to up their cleaning and hospitality game big time.

Your room may not be ready until 4, but we arrived by 11 and were told to enjoy the beach or the pool. Sauna and gym were closed due to COVID and rooms are not cleaned during your stay only towel changes you must request. But, we loved the rooms facing the beach especially the sunset!! Beds were comfy and bathroom is stocked w shampoo, body wash and conditioner. Sit on the patio every night w a glass of wine and listen to the ocean and watch the sunset. Park your car right in front of your door. We went during the week which was nice and quiet; there were even lounge chairs available. Bring swim shoes; this beach has very rocky areas! Breakfast is to go, included in room rate and sufficient: yogurt w granola, muffins, raisin bread, hard boiled eggs, fruit, tea/coffee/juice. The highway traffic can be very loud but we exhausted our days biking and walking and were too tired and sleepy to notice. I found the rates to be very expensive but not a trip I would make often during the summer so I didn’t mind the splurge especially since GREENPORT is a great escape from city life !! My only complaint: we were in room 108 and our bathroom window was shattered. It wasn’t see thru or a hazard to our safety but it was unsightly and should be fixed just for better appearance.

Pay attention to reviews, people. This glorified motel is notable for incredible water views and just about the worst value of any hotel I’ve ever experienced. Service is sullen and intermittently available. To illustrate, it would be virtually impossible to imagine calling the front desk for recommendations for things to do or places to eat. They barely manage the basics. On top of $450+/night for sparsely appointed room, the $25/night resort fee is supposed to cover all the usual things one would expect at a resort. But beach towels are rarely available and it requires threats to get someone to bring a needed lounge chair from the beach to the pool. Forget the door seal indicating that the room has not been used since “disinfection” (doubtful). We saw none of that - in fact, our room was unlocked on arrival. Included breakfast is just - terrible. This place makes you feel like an idiot for laying out Ritz Carlton level money for a place on the side of a very busy road where nobody cares an iota about your experience. Just say no!

While I give this hotel the benefit of the doubt of actually being open amidst the Covid reopening and for having great bones, the hotel sorely lacks in customer service, any attention to detail and did not provide basic needs for what we were paying to receive during our stay.

We chose a specific room based on the fact that it had a private balcony with seating area and direct staircase access to the beach. When we walked into our room, not only was the balcony not private and had no seating or access to the beach, but there was full on construction happening on our deck, complete with a giant stack of lumber, unfinished wood flooring and was covered in sawdust. When we called to try and get a new room based on what we paid for, we were simply told the staff would bring in seating and a table the following day and that was all they could offer. When they finally brought it in a day later, it was cheap plastic chairs (not like the nice lounge sets others had on our shared deck) and a tiny little plastic table that could barely hold a plate. There was also loud construction happening directly outside our door during our stay, so it was anything but a private, quiet and relaxing getaway. Every time I walked on our deck to relax, I would either be met by construction workers right below me or could see the neighbors in bed directly next to me as again, the deck was not private at all.

This is all aside from the fact that we waited 45 minutes at the restaurant after having a reservation, our closet door in the room was completely broken and off of the rails, and there were not basic needs like toilet paper, which we needed to go to the lobby and get (and from a girl with quite the attitude). When I tried to call and get a late check-out on our last day, I was promised a phone call back, which I never even received, only later to be told we needed to be out immediately.

All in all, I would not stay here again until 1) all of the construction is completed and 2) the hotel is able to accommodate what is paid for, and without an attitude. The rooms are cute and the hotel has a lot of potential to be great, but this "4 star" hotel felt much more like 2 stars at best.

Following a good recommendation in Conde Nast, in addition to the very nice photos on the website, we arrived at the hotel with high expectations. However, leaving after two nights, we can for certain say that Sound View is a lost opportunity to give guests a high quality experience and something more than just a amazing view. Because this is now what Sound View, a motel with a stellar location.

The rooms have an ok standard but several necessities are missing. There is no closet to hang your clothes. In the bathroom, there is not one single place where you can put your personal belongings, but they needed to stay in the toilet bag on the floor.

Further, the linoleum floor gives a quite cheap feeling and all the lights in the room are either fully on or off, no chance to dim. In sum, you got very much a Ikea feeling of the rooms, except for the view with high second to none.

Following a good morning run, we were looking forward to a good breakfast. Here we were in for a big disappointment. The "Continental breakfast!" was limited to bagels, Heinz jam in small plastic containers, soft chewy croissants, the cheapest of orange juice in plastic single-use cups and filter coffee with cold milk served in paper cups. There was no opportunity to order anything on the side and the espresso machine which stood there was not in operation during breakfast we were told. The staff responsible for breakfast looked like they wanted to be somewhere else and every question asked to them left us with the impression that we were bothering them. I.e. -Is it possible to get hot milk to the coffee, the response was a that this is not possible combined with a face expression saying that this is a highly inappropriate ask. The second morning, we went somewhere else for breakfast, which is a big shame as a hotel like Sound View, should be able to prioritise this and give guests a good breakfast.

Further, room cleaning is something you have to request, and laundry bags were nowhere to be found in the room. In sum, we left with a feeling of having seriously overpaid, being charged $1.250 for two nights. With this location and the facilities Sound View has, guest should receive a much better experience than what they deliver now.

How many things can go wrong in just 36h @ Sound View Inn Greenport even if you are a returning customer? called on the way many times but was on hold for so long that when finally someone could pick up she called only ask to hold because she is busy, by the time we got through was too late for reserving a massage got wrong information about the winery we wanted to visit on the way and the yoga class… at check in asked to make another reservation for May and seemed that the lady at the reception didn’t want to help so we decided to pass… she just wasn’t interested… reserved dinner at the hotel restaurant, great service but super noisy which killed the atmosphere and the food was mediocre not what we expected from a highly rated restaurant and chef, fish and chips means coated cod we got lots of coated not that much cod, went to the bar very poor selection even the barman thought that is the case... at breakfast which is minimal asked for any kind of cheese, was told that they need to get it, then that it’s expensive and they will need to charge us for it which we approved and then that they can only sell it at 11:30am… after breakfast we wanted to try the yoga class which is advertised on the flyer we received when checking in and learned that the complementary voucher won’t work and that the farm tour also advertised on that day’s activity list is closed... so we had a super great day at everywhere we went (avoiding the hotel) visiting one of the nicest region in the country and came back to find that even if you leave the maid a nice tip you don’t get the full service, no tissue no soap… by the way we spoke to the manager in the morning, nice guy which did apologize for everything but that isn’t the solution. Bottom line if you want the best ocean view with it’s amazing sound, very nice rooms and nothing more and don’t care to spend for that a few hundred dollars a night you should go to Soundview, but if you want a great experience where what is promised is actually delivered don’t come it seems they have a real hard time to deliver, just too many things went wrong in such a short stay and this isn’t even the full list, just a sample. Leaving tomorrow will miss the view and sound of the view, not the Sound View Inn Greenport.

Soundview has always for years been a favorite of ours to visit, whether staying or just driving out to have dinner. We did not stay here on our Greenport summer roadtrip but at their sister hotel Harborfront. Construction was the reason, and yes the balconies and patios were under major renovations. But we spent 2 afternoons by the pool, beach, and beach bar area and it was great. We let each area know we were from Harborfront and we got to enjoy a clean, huge pool with great lifeguard and food service at Jack's Shack. The beach chairs and really cool bar staff had us staying at water's edge til sunset. The end result of the new management's progress with redoing Soundview will be worthy of the bumps right now. Social distancing and masks were apparent everywhere, they should though be disinfecting all tables, chairs, loungers as guests come and go....
