The owners, Stephen and Marianne, saved this remarkable home and its associated 10 acres from developers. As a structural engineer, Steve worked over the years restoring the Sheldon Mansion into an incredibly comfortable and still true-to-the-period home and inn. The mansion was the home of local slate magnate Frederick Sheldon and sometimes afterward had served as the local hospital. Stephen and Marianne are wonderful hosts. Rooms are large, comfortable, and just interesting to explore, as is the rest of the house and the immediate grounds. We were there for one night before headings into southwestern Vermont, and it was very much the perfect place to stay before heading further east.
We returned to Sheldon Mansion Inn for a night n early September 2020. Since our previous visit, the pandemic happened and is very much still happening. All the appropriate modifications have been made at the Inn — social distancing, masks, and the same high level of cleanliness we observed at our last visit. We felt very comfortable. Our hosts were as friendly and solicitous as ever. And breakfast of individual quiche, fruit compote, and blueberry bead — all fresh and homemade — was fresh and delicious.
I needed a nice place to stay in Granville. My son's bachelor party was being held at a relatives farm house nearby, but staying in that "frat house" environment was not going to work for me! Fortunately, I found the Sheldon Mansion online. It turned out to be perfect. Not only were Marianne and Stephen two of the nicest people I have met in my travels, the mansion had a charm that can only be felt in an older historic place of such stature. I recommend The Sheldon Mansion to anyone looking for peace, comfort.... and a darn good breakfast! Safe travels everyone! Tom
We have stayed over two summers now and have enjoyed each time. Owners are always kind and accommodating. Breakfast in the morning looking out over the Green mountains is now something we look forward to yearly (and its always delicious!). Highly recommend!
The Sheldon Mansion offers visitors to the upstate region a classic bed and breakfast experience. Stephen and Marianne have clearly put their heart and soul into creating this property. During this summer of 2020, they hosted us with every care possible--our room was unoccupied for more than 24 hours before we arrived, and as best practice has indicated, they did not enter the room until after we checked out. Clean towels and other items were offered as needed. Breakfast was excellent for our three mornings--something different each day! And our hosts were pleasant and offered suggestions of things to do in the area. For a country-inn-style stay, they met all expectations! Our mattress (Saratoga Room) could be updated, but that's my only constructive comment. I highly recommend The Sheldon Mansion, and I'd stay there again.…
