Big Cave Camp reposes atop an enormous granite whaleback commanding inspirational views across the famous Matobo National Park. Big Cave Camp has a four star lodge with restaurant, as well as a well equipped camp site with adjacent Ndebele village. Sophisticated African architecture incorporates colossal boulders into a luxuriously appointed thatched lodge positioned amidst ancient Khoisan rock art.Retire at a day's end to the natural rock-pool and sundeck, the Leopard`s Lair lounge and bar, a cave-style boma for pre-dinner drinks or the popular lodge library. The seven thatched A-frame lodges, each with en-suite bathroom and private balcony, resonate African creative flair.Find solitude within an intimate retreat as secluded as the original Kalanga grain bins that nestle amongst the rocks.

Thank you to Lynne, Shepherd, Tuanda and the rest of the Team at Big Cave Camp for a wonderful weekend which was highlighted by trekking Rhinos in the Matopos National Park, and bird watching & hiking around the BCC property.

BCC is run with one thing in mind - the guest’s experience. The lodging is awesome with great views from the cabins, comfy beds, fluffy towels etc etc. They even have a camp ground with great amenities for those looking for a more rustic experience. The food is amazing. You will not go hungry. That is a guarantee!! (I’m not sure how I will survive tomorrow without a cooked breakfast now I am home). The guides are tremendously knowledgeable and very friendly. They make any of the adventures fun and informative. We had a blast trekking for and walking with the Rhinos, a bucket list experience. And finally the location, watching a sunset from the rocks at the back of the lodge, or lightning rock, was spectacular.

Hats off to the whole crew. I hope our paths cross again soon.

Big Cave Camp is unlike any accommodation I've ever visited. Surrounded by giant boulders that appear to have been dropped from the sky, this unique lodge incorporates its buildings into the surreal landscape seamlessly. Individual cabins, each with its own balcony, offer privacy and peace and ensure a quiet night's rest in the comfy beds. An early morning hike with a wonderful guide taught me much about the indigenous plants, "walking with the rhinos" in Matobo Park was fun, and the scenic drives on the property well worth the time. Even though we were rained out on our sundowner, a G&T in front of the warming fire at the main lodge was a special treat. The food was fresh and delicious, the service first class, the activities entertaining & educational, and both guides were friendly, knowledgeable and informative. My time spent in the heart of such an incredible landscape was truly a memorable and humbling experience. I would happily recommend a stay at Big Cave to anyone looking for a beautiful, relaxing and unique getaway.

We spent two marvellous days in Big Cave! The location of the Camp is beautifully nested inbetween rocks, the room was verly clean, nicely furnished and had a spectacular view, with a nice balcony. Also, there is a lovely and clean pool area, which was nice to use to cool down.
The staff was very polite and attentive, the food was very, very tasty. We would loove to come back here!

Advantages.
Big Cave setting is great & the views are amazing. The rooms are small but very comfortable & all have great views.
Dining area is set against a huge rock & certainly adds to the charm & feel of your surroundings.
The property is great & various rock climbs will give you special views & sunsets.
Staff are friendly but hard to find.

Disadvantages
On our 3 night trip we encountered a few issues. 3 rooms booked.
We had breakfast & supper daily. Hallal meals had been requested & confirmed.
Breakfast daily was scrambled eggs & toast !
On one day eggs, toast & coffee ran out, before all guests had served.
Supper daily was chicken, but we were assured that there would be no problem supplying Hallal meats.
We drove to Bulawayo daily to top up our meal requirements.
We had blocked showers in 2 rooms, we also had waste/sewage leaking from the main waste pipe between the rooms. These were addressed.
We had torn sheets & pillow cases.
Towels were not changed in our 3 night stay.

If these scenarios don’t bother you then you have value for your money.

Good day Sumeya. Thank you for your review. As per our email correspondence from earlier in the week I make the following points. Our breakfast certainly does not comprise of scrambled eggs and toast!! :) Breakfast every day in camp is a selection of fresh fruit, yoghurts and cereals. For cooked breakfast we have a selection of sausage, bacon, beef mince, baked beans, tomato etc. The scrambled egg ran out after everyone had already had a first helping, and ten minutes later there was more eggs available. So we most certainly do not offer only scrambled eggs on toast!! You stayed on a dinner bed and breakfast so lunch was never included in the first place. In addition what you fail to state re dinner was that on two of the nights beef was offered and declined by yourselves which is very strange? Sirloin steak on the one night and beef short rib on the other evening.. The beef as stated is also Halaal . I did apologize for the occasion when your drain was blocked, and subsequently rectified by staff. This can happen in any establishment. You had a minor hole in one sheet which we also apologized for. You rejected our offer of a discount for your unhappiness , as you had complained about the overall price of the accommodation as well the price of the activities etc.. So money did seem an issue. Re the towels, we only change towels if requested as we have a serious shortage of water in the Matobo area. Anyway thanks for your valued input. Best Regards Dave Waddy (owner)

This lodge has been built with good taste and made excellent use of the natural beauty of the area, with its North-facing aspect looking onto the fascinating granite hill slopes over the valley. There are many intriguing granite formations and one of them looks like a giant version of the Maya stone heads of South America.
There is lots of scope for both gentle and more strenuous walks and climbs, to suit almost any visitor.
The main dining area /lounge is built over and among the huge granite boulders, and the staff join in a way that truly host their guests.

What a lovely stay! Super friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are private, very clean and comfortable. Dinner was lovely and the breakfast was an absolute feast! Would definitely recommend.

One issue is wifi access was not the best and there isn’t wifi in the rooms. You can get a wifi voucher from reception but there is a cost after. It may be best to get access in the rooms as there are no telephones in the room to contact reception.

Thanks so much for the lovely review. We are very glad that you enjoyed the stay and our staff! Wifi is unfortunateky via Satellite so that is why is is expensive. We have no cell phone reception at the lodge. Due to the propensity for lightning strikes in and around camp getting Wi-fi to the rooms on a permanent basis is tricky, as the boosters are constantly getting knocked out! Best Regards Dave Waddy

We loved Big Cave! Amazing property and location. The lodge is set amongst the granite boulders and blends beautifully into the environment. Special thanks to Shepherd for taking us rhino tracking which was an incredible experience. Staff were very attentive. The food was excellent with plenty of variation at breakfast. Dinners had a good selection of meat for main course, and the starters were delicious! Well done Chef Primrose. We will most certainly be back!

We stayed at the Big Cave for two night in February during the low / rainy season. Despite the season, we saw a lot of wildlife on the game drives, and had a great time on the historical tour as well. Walking tour with the white rhinos is definitely a highlight of the area, though I have to say I felt a bit uncomfortable as the rhinos seemed nervous to have us so close (10-15 m) to them - not for our safety but for disrupting the rhinos.

I can recommend the activities the Big Cave offers; game drive and historical tour to the Mapotos park, and the walking and driving tours on the property. Lynn is a wonderful and very welcoming manager and our guides were very knowledgeable, helpful and kind. The lodge is beautifully built on side of one of the rocky hills, and the cottages are stylish and very functional. Each has a nice private terrace overlooking the valley. Lunches and dinners are served communally around a big table, which allows you to get to know other guests too - and the food was lovely... :)

Hi Jukka. Thanks so much for the lovely review of the lodge. I am really glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. The rhinos do spend a lot of time with the Parks officers that guard them in fairly close vicinity, however I will chat to the guides to make sure they keep a respectful distance! We hope to see you back with us soon. Best Regards Dave

We stayed one night here and were pleasantly surprised. The location is stunning and the service was very good. The staff was very attentive but just enough to give you the privacy needed. A particular mention to Shepherd, who took us to Worlds View. He was very knowledgable and attentive which made the excursion extra special.
The rooms were pleasant, the lodge itself is in the most magnificent location with incredible views and the food was nice too. Overall a great stay but I would say it would benefit a little updating.

My first visit to Big Cave Camp in 2018 was too brief, so this was a 9 day return visit filled with the incredible peace & tranquility of the Matobo, the wonderful hospitality of the staff, great food prepared by a creative chef, birding, botanising & hiking. Shepherd Mpofu, one of the Big Cave guides hiked with us to eNanke cave to see the globally significant rock paintings there. Can't wait to be back again!!
