The eco friendly Sable Sands has 16 traditionally thatched 'rondavels' with en suite bathroom, making your lodge the perfect blend of ancient culture, nature and modern convenience. The lodge is owner managed and has built up a great reputation for the enthusiastic team and hospitality. Sable Sands is situated on a forestry concession and the lodge harvests dead wood for cooking and heating up the hot water through wood boilers. A generator is ran in the early morning hours and evening for guests to charge their cameras and batteries, and lighting is provided through solar lights after the generator has made place for the sounds of nature at night. Laundry service is provided and limited wifi is available in the evening before and after dinner. This African forest home also has a tree house and a refreshing solar powered swimming pool. The main building composes of a dining area, lounge, library and bar and just in front there is a large outdoor fire pit where guests can have dinner under the stars instead of inside. From here you overlook the Dete Vlei, which frequently hosts wildlife visitors at the solar pumped water hole. Here you have a chance of seeing sable antelope, zebra and thirsty herds of elephant, buffalo, and if you are lucky you might spot lion, cheetah, painted dog, jackal and more. The Vlei is also renowned for its incredible bird population: no less than 350 different species in all. Safaris are conducted on the private and neighboring concessions or through pre booking inside the Hwange National Park (18 kms - 40 mins game drive to the entrance of the park). During the safari, coffee/tea/water or water and soft drink/beers are provided and included. Sable Sands does not offer any credit card facilities yet, and guests are asked to settle their extra's (eg. laundry, bar bill, extra safari) in cash upon departure.

We had a fantastic 2 nights at Sable Sands. Food and room (direct view to the water hole) were excellent. However, the best part was the friendly and knowledgeable staff who made us feel very welcomed. We can fully recommend the place. We've done many safaris and this was among the best experiences. Warm thank you everyone at Sable Sands!

This was a truley great place to visit. The staff was friendly, the food was good, the pool was clean and nice. You get to experience true african wildlife. There is no tv nor wifi but instead you can enjoy the sounds of the african night. If you can't live without these things, don't go here. But if you, like me, like to experience the african bush, this place wont dissapoint you. Also, the safari guide was really good and highly experienced.

We had the most amazing stay at Sable Sands ! The place is beautiful with outstanding views on a waterhole where herds of animal cruise along the day. Great sightings in the concession and in Hwange National Park. The staff is warm and brilliant, the overdid themselves to offer our family a full customized experience. So glad we got to meet those incredible people who run the place and make it happen.

It was a wonderful experience! Every aspect of the two night stay was an enjoyable treat, from the gourmet food, All the staff who seem to love their jobs, my room and amenities, and safari transportation and gear. They have equipment for any situation like an umbrella for rain showers at camp or a hooded, lined poncho for rain during a safari drive. The entire staff went the extra mile by presenting me with a birthday cake after a day in the bush and an amazing dinner. Highly recommended!

A smallish camp with no fence to keep the wildlife out. When we were there elephant continually entered the camp which we thought was great. The closeness to wildlife was the key feature. We felt safe whilst getting an authentic bush experience. We had an amazing guide in Kennedy, saw a lot of game including cheetah, lion and painted dog, and learned a lot about the whole Hwange environment. The food was excellent. The host, MC, was charming and efficient. Brian, the co-owner is both an excellent cook and manager.

. A great camp location and accommodation. Meals were excellent and the ambient was incredible. On the arrival afternoon game drive we saw tsessebe, silverback jackals, warthogs, elephants the sunset visit by a herd of elephants and a fantastic dinner made the day. Our hosts were thoughtful enough to provide guests with polar fleece ponchos to cut down the chill factor when on game drives. Not much luck in Hwange the next day due to the cold but this was rectified by another herd at dusk and again a superb dinner. Great hosts. I hope to revisit in 2020 I would use Batoka services again and have recommended them to friends who are contemplating visiting.

My family and I really enjoyed our stay here. Where do I start - meals were great (much better than expected). We had one vegetarian and they made great special meals for her as well. Never forgot. We had out own table every time. The game drives were awesome. We had JC as our guide (we did interact with Kennedy and he also seemed great). Although with other groups, it still felt personal as it was 9 - 10 passengers. The lodging is like 30 minutes from the park, but most of the wildlife viewing we had was outside the park closer to the lodging. One night we even heard the lions roaring. The rooms were good. Mosquito nets did their job. Had power (not 24 hrs as is eco lodge but was as promised) in rooms for battery charging. Hot water as promised (not in morning due to safety of workers) through the day/evening. Saw some people use the pool, so must have been good. And good enough that the baboons also went for a drink. We all really liked this place and would go back again.

At first glance Sable Sands looks very basic - and it is - simple and gorgeous in its simplicity. This lodge has really concentrated on the important things - great beds, a good shower, creative delicious food and brilliant, kind and accomodating staff. The view over Dete Vlei is wonderful and the absolute silence hard to beat. There is no forced herding into game drive vehicles, no sitting around a table talking to people you don't want to talk to - in all aspects you are encouraged to have your own holiday at your own pace and your privacy is respected.
