I love fire Island, Cherry Grove and Dune Point. I call myself a beach snob and I said this place is one of the best beach spots. Very quiet, peaceful, and kind. Will be there in July again:-) Can't wait to be there!!!

We've stayed at the Dune Point four or five times over the years, and it keeps getting better. Since our first visit, the rooms have undergone renovations, and while some of the cheesy beach decor remains (thankfully), I was happy to see new modern touches this past summer. Especially nice are the rooms with real kitchens, and of course, the ones facing the ocean.

Side note: I wish the website put up more pictures to help you pick your room. The difference between some of the rooms is pretty substantial, but I guess the price point usually makes that decision for us.

As you probably can tell from the photos, the Dune Point is right on the ocean - the location couldn't be more perfect. It's a 5 minute walk to "town", but far enough away that the waves drown out the Fire Island noise. The communal space is nice -- picnic tables, a gazebo, lots of beach chairs, and a shower to hose off the sand. Our only real complaint is the outdoor grill stinks! No one uses it. Having a shared gas grill would really improve the place.

Cherry Grove isn't for everyone, but it's hard not to like the Dune Point, especially if you can't rent a house for the full week. The staff is super friendly and helpful -- i.e. calling you to find out which ferry you'll be arriving on -- and the overall vibe is perfect for a beach vacation. If you've never been to Cherry Grove before, it's a magical little beach town, that's one part part gay retirement home, and one part hippie commune. The Dune Point fits right in, while adding a touch of class to the joint.

I stayed here with my boyfriend (we're a straight couple), and both he and I agree we would never want to stay anywhere else. Everyone was so friendly and what it came down to, just looking to have a good time, laugh, drink, and have fun. We stayed in room #9 which was perfect for us to have a private bedroom, even though it was just the two of us, but could easily accommodate more. The room has a great kitchen fully staffed with all the amenities you will need for drinking and eating. The bathroom was your run of the mill, difficult for a chick to shave, but still made it work. The dining area/living area was so spacious that we used it as a dance floor on a rainy day. We loved the balcony and literally only steps away from the beautiful sandy beach. Loved that they provided a 4 person paddle board set, as we were bummed that we forgot our football. You cannot go wrong with this room...updated, clean, and just like home!

My husband and I spent a night at Dune Point in August, 2015. It was a terrible experience for many reasons. First of all, we had problems finding it because Google Maps took us to the wrong place. It turns out that you need to take a ferry to the island, which I guess we would have know had we read the directions on "How to get here" more carefully!

Secondly, it is a walk-on ferry only, which bothered my husband because it meant that he had to leave his beloved Harley on the mainland, which he was worried about. The price of the ferry was $35 for both of us.

Thirdly, the room we spent $310 US dollars on was tiny, and there was no where to sit outside of it (see accompanying photo). There was a very nice communal place to sit at the front of the Dune Point property, overlooking the beach, but this offered no privacy.

Fourthly, there is no where but the beach to walk. The community is made up of a grid of boardwalks which crisscross high grasses which hide the small houses (see accompanying photo). There are a couple of bars and restaurants to go to but that's about it. No boating, kayaking, cycling: nada.

Fifthly, the restaurants were not very good and they were extremely expensive. My husband ordered a lobster roll at a restaurant because the waitress recommended it, and we just about fell off our chair when we got the bill and saw that it cost $27.

Finally, call us stupid hapless Canadians, but we had no idea that the entire Island is a homosexual destination. This we could live with, but the full nudity (and make-out sessions) on the beach made us very uncomfortable. Had there been a nude section of the beach, we could have avoided it, but it appears that anything goes, anywhere on the beach.

Looking at The Dune Point's website and other TripAdvisor reviews, there is no indication that Fire Island is a homosexual community. I believe that this should be made clear on Dune Point's website so that everyone knows what they are in for.

This place does not understand the word hospitality AT ALL. I planned a romantic week with my partner at this place. However, it turned out to be anything but romantic.
- Day 1: The day we arrived we were trying to have a nice dinner on the patio but had to listen to painters until 10pm.
- Day 2 We were awakened at 7am by workers banging on the side of the bedroom walls outside.
- Day 3:-5: More workers early in the morning until late at night. Banging and carrying on right next to the room/patio we had rented.

We complained to the desk worker who told us to talk to the manager. No apologies given and we were told the work would stop but it continued and the workers proceeded to get more rude and started to tease our dog.

We were not offered clean towels or linens the entire week. Trash was not removed or even new liners offered. There was no way to sweep the floors of the sand and dirt that accumulated over the week.

On the day we went to leave, we asked if we could store our luggage before catching the ferry (which they advertise as a 'service') and were told No, that we could pay for bag check at another hotel. When we attempted to protest that we had just paid over 1,000 for accomodations that were substandard, the desk person told us "what ever, Don't come back".

I will never go back to this place again and would never recommend it to anyone that wishes to visit Fire Island.

We stayed in one of the studios with a terrace, the studio was lovely and had everything we needed. Dune point have lots of beautiful options for accommodation it's in a great location and highly recommend. Cherry grove is fantastic, great vibe and people! We stayed in September and will be coming back next summer.

Communication was excellent and lots of help with queries. The check in was right by the boat dock. Easy walk to the pines 20-25 minutes, or get the boat. We also walked to ocean bay / ocean beach nice to pop there but it's pretty busy and completely different, so we were so pleased to be in cherry grove. And the boat back was easy.

My husband and I packed our bags and headed to Dune Point for a two-night, mid-week, no-baby getaway and it was PERFECTION. The room was small but tidy; I loved the fact that there was a small refrigerator and, had we stayed longer, I'm sure we would have taken advantage of the stovetop and microwave. The shared deck & gazebo with very comfortable beach chairs overlooking the ocean provided a beautiful retreat from reality and steps away & down a wood path is the gorgeous, clean, sandy beach. Check-in was very easy (love that the office is a few steps from the ferry terminal) and the staff at the hotel were very prompt to assist when we ran into some problems in our bathroom after dark. The room was simply decorated & we enjoyed the fact that you could open the large sliding doors to get a nice breeze. We WILL be back next summer!

I stayed at Dune Point twice this summer, once in June for two weeks and once in September for a week, and the quality of the rooms and service is excellent. The hotel is ideally situated close to the active and hard-partying center of town, but is removed enough to be quiet and calm, if that's the experience you want to have. The staff cares very much about making the hotel itself a restful place but is also very knowledgeable and encouraging of the daily nightlife. An ideal place to stay if you don't want to deal with shares and want to stay in a place that isnt a 24-hour party.

This place is really well located and clean. It would be wonderful if you could relax in the room and enjoy the fresh air and breeze at night but the windows don't open and if you leave the door open there is no slider/screen so all the bugs (and there are plenty) get in. A shame, really. I know that screens are hard to maintain but it was silly to have to run the noisy a/c on a beautiful evening when a breeze is available but for the missing screens. This was our second stay, different room, same problem.

Stayed here June 2011 and absolutely loved the location. Petra the manager has everything very well organised and is very pleasant and friendly. Cherry Grove is incredible - a world unto it's own.

Unfortunately the unit we stayed in which is yet to be renovated (across from the main house on the other side of the boardwalk from the beach) had paper thin walls from the bedroom to the adjoining room and we were kept awake by neighbours. Not sure if this is applicable to the other rooms which are renovated but probably would not stay here again as a consequence.
