We stayed three nights in the Mountain Shadows Hotel during the first snow fall of the season. The first night was a last minute booking as we couldn't reach Rhodes with the recent snowfall. We were warmly welcomed despite arriving much later than we'd anticipated on the first night with the driving difficulties! Sonja went above and beyond to ensure...

Thanks to Sonia and her team for making us feel so welcome after a tough day. We drove 2 hours up the Bastervoet pass and arrived in the early evening to a good clean, value for money overnight stay. On top of Barkly pass it is perfectly situated for exploring the Eastern Cape.

Mountain Shadows Hotel is a true country hotel that welcomes you with genuine country hospitality. The rooms are huge and spotlessly clean and above all there is total peace and quiet. The staff are friendly and very accommodating. I definite place to send a couple of days if you enjoy quiet surrounding and fresh mountain air.

We made use of Mountain Shadows as an overnight stopover en route to Cape St Francis traveling from Durban. The location is excellent (only 18k's off the main R56 route that encompasses an epic, scenic drive up the magnificent Barkley pass) The rooms are more than comfortable with all amenities required. The staff were friendly and very accommodating, allowing us...

The approach to the hotel from Eliot is breathtaking, straight up to Barkley's Pass. At the top is the hotel. The rooms are basic but functional, with lots of hot water. The power went out most of the evening (I suspect a common occurrence here, judging by their preparedness for power outages). The kitchen was able to cook a fantastic...

We had a good nights sleep after a long day on the road. Basic needs met. Had supper, which was adequate with some delicious tuna salad. Second time we made use if this facility which is just off the main route between Elliot and Lady Grey. The ocean was calling so we gave breakfast a miss. Beautiful scenery around the...

Recently stayed there for one evening - arrived very late and they asked if they could put my food in the room - clearly I said yes. Food was kept warm on a hot tray but with a cooling rack between. Had good old fashioned home cooking! Rooms clean, bed comfortable, electric blanket and the heater was turned on as...

This establishment exudes old world charm and homeliness from the moment you walk in the doors. A dining room with snow capped mountain views and a swan swimming in a pond for good measure. A relaxation lounge with a large fire place and cosy snuggle in couches. A large bar with another huge wood burning fire place all add the...

If you are travelling through this are or exploring it for a day or two then this small hotel is a great place to stop over. Rooms are large and simply appointed, food tasty and served in a simple buffet style - they get right what many a 5 star hotel cant ... Hot plates ....

Blown away at the landscape while driving the Barkly Pass for the first time...then stumbling upon this hotel for a much needed coffee break. The staff were off for new years afternoon but the hostess happily obliged to provide coffee. Very quiet, peaceful and loved the retro decor and unique layout of the hotel.
