East Hampton Village's charming Baker House 1650 is regarded by critics and guests alike as the most exclusive and luxurious bed and breakfast in the Hamptons. From the ivy covered walls to the 200 year old wisteria and formal English gardens, the feel is distinctly European. Less expected are state of the art amenities such as flat screen high definition TV's with full cable and DVD players, Bose wave music systems with iPod docks and free wireless internet. The large, beautifully furnished rooms with wood burning fireplaces, William Morris wallpapers, and Frette linens delight visitors, and the lavish bathrooms are enhanced by whirlpools and L'Occitane products. The outdoor infinity-edge pool, with teak chaises for sunbathing, is ideal for unwinding, and the Baker Spa, featuring an endless pool, massage area, steam shower, Jacuzzi and sauna, provides unparalleled relaxation. In the summer, guests receive coveted East Hampton Village beach parking passes, as well as plush beach towels, umbrellas and chairs. The Baker Carriage House, located directly behind the main house, offers even more luxurious accommodations and suites, making it a purely indulgent retreat. The Baker House 1650 is ideally located on the historic village green, within walking distance to the ocean, as well as world-class shopping and restaurants.

An excellent B&B! And I love to sleep in history (the Franklin stove in breakfast room was one of the upgrades after it was built) Not a hotel, does not claim to be one One issue: the bedroom safe in room 13 (the hedges) is VERY awkward to use. I could not figure out how to use it, but that may be my fault.

I spoke with Heather on Thursday night. I expressed interest in a 2 night stay over the weekend. She told me there was availability and followed up that the ´pools are open’. I arrived on Friday and was told that the pools were not heated. It is unusual to swim outdoors in November and as the weather was forecasted to be on the 60s I had looked forward to swimming outdoors. Saturday morning the woman at the desk related that she was telling people the pools are open ´but not heated’ That extra bit of information was left out when I spoke with Heather. She said something about the pool pipes getting irrigated. I sensed a run around starting but she said she would call the owner and ask about heating the pools. I followed up after breakfast and was assured in 3-4 hours the water would be warm. At 4pm the water was still frigid—maybe the temp had risen from 56 to 68 but definitely not swimmable. Sunday morning the water was in the 80s and pleasant to swim in. I did enjoy the pool Sunday morning before checking out. Heather finally admitted it was she who had the conversation with me. She defended her « pools are open » claim to mean a 56 degree pool is one in which guests would enjoy the looks of. While this may have been an innocent optimistic thought, in my view, it was a bait and switch. I asked for a night compensation for a future stay, but she admitted (as stated in another review) that the owner would never approve of this with some implication that they are cheap. Furthermore they advertise ´fresh squeezed’ juice as part of the breakfast which is far from freshly squeezed as it comes in a bottle which the breakfast attendent showed me. Endless jet in the pool downstairs didn’t work a year ago when I was here and didn’t work yesterday either. Bedding is extremely uncomfortable, soft mattresses, soft pillows, (hideous worn looking sleigh bed in the Georgica room) waffle cotton cover felt through the sheets. Grounds and architecture are pleasant. It’s overpriced and they should replace the beds, mattresses etc.

Response from Heather McCormack, General Manager at The Baker House 1650
Responded Nov 9, 2022
Dear Tennis153045, I am sorry that you feel you were deceived. As I mentioned to you in person when you checked out, no one was trying to be deceptive. I believe it was a misunderstanding. I actually was not here on Thursday night (I was emailing with you back and forth on Thursday day with room options) but if a guest asks me if the pools are open, I take that to mean are the pools uncovered, not are they heated. If a guest asks if they are heated, we let them know whether or not the heat is on. We have many guests that like to just sit next to the pool without ever going in. My point to you was that if a heated pool was an integral part of my stay, I would just have been more clear and maybe ask if the heat is on and to what temperature instead of just asking if it was open. Because again, the heat could technically be on but could be heated to 70 degrees versus 90 degrees. You assumed something and just because it turned out to be something different, it doesn't mean that it was a bait and switch. In any case, the heat was turned on first thing on Saturday morning after you asked but it takes about 12 hours to raise the temperature 20 degrees. While the outdoor pool was heating up on Saturday, you were offered to use the spa with the heated indoor pool, free of charge. I feel like this was a fair option, but I guess you feel differently. When you requested a free night due to not being able to swim in the outdoor pool on Saturday, I told you that there was no way the owner would go for that. I certainly was not implying that she was cheap (again, another problem with assuming) but that there was already a solution with the complimentary indoor pool use that I thought was appropriate and knowing the owner for 18 years, I know that she would deem it appropriate as well. I told you that I would certainly ask her though, which I did later that day, and said she would not comp a future stay for that very reason. You did not mention anything else at check-out regarding the orange juice (which is fresh squeezed by a supplier that we use and says so right on the container) or anything about the bedding, mattress, pillows or bed. If some of these things were mentioned earlier in your stay, we have plenty of other pillows that we could have certainly switched out and we have different mattress pads that we can put on our mattresses to make them harder or softer. Obviously people have different preferences for firm versus soft and we have many options that we can provide. It is just hard to address an issue like that on a review a few days later. We always appreciate constructive criticism and will certainly look into replacing some mattresses this year but I do also know that our bedding is not "extremely uncomfortable" nor that the sleigh bed is "hideous". You obviously have a very sour taste in your mouth, and I am sorry that you feel that way but that was never our intention. We wish you well and hope you will be happy at the next hotel you decide to stay in. Sincerely, Heather

Love The Baker House! It is wonderful! It is in the perfect location in East Hampton and the best place to stay. I have stayed there 4 times and loved every visit. Everything on the property is beautiful - the grounds, rooms and common areas. The two pools are lovely. Breakfast is delicious and the servers are friendly and accommodating. Housekeeping is terrific as well. The staff at the front desk is warm and welcoming. Looking forward to another visit!

My first impression of the Baker House 1650 reminded me of a majestic property in Europe. The layout allowed for privacy and exclusivity while remaining unpretentious. An easy home away from home experience. Thank you Baker House!

We are a large Italian family and required a lot of rooms and space so the Carriage House at The Baker House exceeded our needs. From the beautiful grounds, salt water private pool to staff that were 2nd to none-it was an amazing experience. Is ideally located within walking distance to the East Hampton village. Best part though was Anne, the Innkeeper. She was so charming, accommodating, had a great personality and makes the best breakfast! She’s the reason we will surely return.

My husband and I stayed here for his 50th birthday on November 11th. It is a charming B&B with good service and an excellent breakfast. I had "toads in a hole", which was eggs in fresh sourdough bread with cheddar cheese melted on top and a side of avocado. My husband got the croissant french toast stuffed with ligonberry and poppy cream cheese. We also got bacon and fresh fruit on the side. The spa is very nice. The steam room is sooo hot and the pool is hot enough and relaxing. I was disappointed by the dry sauna. I really wanted it to be hotter. No matter how hard we tried, we couldn't make it very hot. You can rent the spa for $75/hour and it's just you and your honey. Also, there's the most gentle dog named Bogie (blond labrador?) who very gently greets guests. I enjoyed myself at this spa and would come back just for the breakfast!

We came to stay with two other couples and it was the perfect getaway! Baker House is beautiful right now in the fall and the staff were so kind. The chef made my needy friends a full non-dairy and vegan menu just for them which was killer!! Defff coming back, maybe for a quiet couples weekend, looking forward to using the spa!
