My friend and I came for a girlfriend weekend. We loved this place. Sam and Maria thought of everything. Our room had snacks and candy inside awaiting us. There were refrigerators in the hall filled with pop, a Keurig in the hall for coffee and tea, and fresh baked goods. There was also a filtered water dispenser in the hall, which I loved since I am a water snob. The breakfast was the best of all. I am gluten-free and they were able to accommodate my dietary restrictions. It was a three course breakfast, so delicious. I ate every bite except for the poached egg because I don’t like eggs. I was even offered an alternate style egg when the server saw that I didn’t eat my poached egg. I was going to list a favorite item from the three course breakfast, but I liked it all. I suppose I liked the four heart shaped mini waffles and the apple crisp dish. Parking was easy, right next to the building. I think the only thing I should mention is that the staircase to get upstairs to the rooms is a spiral staircase, which could be difficult for some people. My friend carried my suitcase, up and down, since I am unsteady on stairs. I wish it had been warmer outside. I would have loved to walk along the path that surrounds the property. I will definitely return, maybe with my husband, or maybe with a girlfriend, but I will be back.

My husband and I were past due for a couples get away. We decided to have our very first Bed & Breakfast experience and the Sutherland House did not disappoint. We had excellent communications from staff members in regards to our stay. I appreciated that even before we arrived they reached out to us to see if we had any dietary restrictions or special requests. I eat a gluten-free diet and they were very kind to be able to accommodate my dietary needs. Breakfast was truly an amazing experience. I thought that with being gluten-free that I would be getting something simple like bacon and eggs but quite the opposite. They provided me with a delicious 4 course meal. The home was cozy and felt like stepping back in time. We appreciated the small touches such as complimentary cookies, snacks, coffee, and supply kits that were provided in the rooms. Between the thoughtful touches and the convenient location this was truly a wonderful experience.

My husband and I enjoyed our two nights at Sutherland House very much. The Victorian era house is very lovely with especially gorgeous woodwork, fireplaces, and similar built-in bookcases and cabinets, decorated with much period appropriate furnishings. Innkeepers Faye and Bob are welcoming and helpful without being intrusive. Our room, Lillian’s Loft, was very comfortable and quiet, and everywhere was spotless. Both breakfasts we enjoyed there were delicious and beautifully presented (baked pears with pomegranate drizzle and seeds were scrumptious and unique!) and the cookies were excellent too. Altogether a very restful getaway. Highly recommended!

Even through owner knew the window air conditioner was not working properly, it made a constant very loud noise, we were not told about it at time of booking. When we were taken to our home by the owner he just said it was broken and will be fixed soon. The noise was so loud we could not sleep so we turn it off then the room became too hot to sleep comfortably. The following day we complained and the owner offered us an another room but it was so small, one chair and nowhere to put our suitcases. Not once were we offered any money back for the inconvenience. Owner was very nice but it did not make up for the unpleasant stay. The housekeeper said we were the 3rd couple to complain about the air conditioner. That room should not have been rented out after the first complaint.
Breakfast was ok but we stay at B&B’s routinely and the breakfast was minimal and coffee was so weak it looked like watered down tea (the color of honey). No toast/biscuits laying out on the table with butter and jam. 3 small courses, a fruit something, and egg something, and a desert something.
We stayed 2 nights but will look for a different place next time.

Hello, We are deeply sorry that we disappointed you for your trip. We strive to provide you with a true 5 star experience and unfortunately we did not. I would however like to address some of your comments; For the air conditioner, we have already replaced it (right after your stay). We were waiting for a new one to come in as the recent guests had just mentioned it and we got it on order right away. Normal air conditioners don't fit right int he old style windows. We tried our best to accommodate you with an entire new room for free, regarding the size, all other rooms were already full for that stay so that is all we had in our home. Because of this, we did not feel as though we should offer you money back for using two rooms and having breakfast both days. We would of loved to have a conversation with you to offer you other nights and have a place for your concerns to be heard if you still felt that was unfair. We source our coffee from a locally grown coffee company and have multiple options for black or stronger coffee which we make fresh per request. We would love to have given you some if asked! Again, I apologize for the experience you had but we would still love to have you back to show you a true 5 star experience. Respectfully, the owners of the Sutherland House!

My wife and I stayed in the Parker Suite while our kids stayed with family at Darien Lake for a concert.
The room and common areas are immaculate with a nice “historical ambiance”. The grounds are well maintained with comfortable seating and a walking trail. The recently added exterior lighting is a nice touch.
The bed was very comfortable and the in-room jacuzzi just what we needed after a long day of driving.
There are ample amenities both in the rooms and the common areas, The classical music playing in the piano room was very relaxing.
We thoroughly enjoyed the 3 course breakfast and interesting conversations with couples from Florida, California, Buffalo and Rochester.
We highly recommend Sutherland House.

We stayed in Ivy Solace, which was adorable. The rooms are well coordinated with a lot of attention to the little details that make for a very charming experience. The room was fresh and clean, and very cozy. Anything you may need - toiletries, thread/tape, coffee, water - is available to you during your stay. Breakfast was delicious, and very filling. Location wise, you're very close to the Canandaigua wine trail, as well as the town center. You really can't beat it, we will absolutely be coming back to stay again. Thank you for a great stay, Sutherland team!

Loved the Victorian house. We were welcomed by Sam and he showed us the security measures that are taken for our door entry. He showed us around the house and checked us into our cozy elegant room, Ivy Solace. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was spacious, I especially loved the huge tub. You will want for nothing as cold drinks and snacks are complementary as well as toiletries. The breakfast was scrumptious and served very elegantly. It consisted of warmed cinnamon pineapple with chutney, a baked egg with toast, & stuffed French toast, along with juice , coffee, & ice water. We got on our way, but alas, I forgot my make-up, toiletries case. I notified Sam through the B&B and he quickly got on it and mailed it to me, no charge. What a wonderful place to stay! Thank you Sam & Maria!

The Sutherland House stands as a treasure in a rural stretch of Canandaigua and delivered perfectly on our hopes for a B&B that is also rich in history and inspiration. I personally needed a tranquil place to rest, read, and complete a writing deadline, and the Sutherland House solidified itself as the perfect retreat.
Every morning at 9am, a Sutherland House chef served a three-course breakfast unique to the day before. Our first breakfast began with a yogurt parfait, topped with granola and fresh berries, served in a gorgeous crystal dish. That course was followed by a scrumptious, baked omelet with sausage, then concluded with the lightest, most delicious French toast I’ve ever had. I’m sure every breakfast added a happy pound to my waistline, but the morning feast was by far the highlight of our stay.
After each breakfast, I usually sat by the living room fireplace with a book, enjoying the classical music that played quietly in the background. My husband took to reading the vintage newspapers displayed on the coffee table with 19th-century events, such as the sinking of the Titanic. Mornings also afforded an opportunity to converse with the friendly staff and learn more about the lovely home, its history, and the surrounding Finger Lakes and wineries.
Again, the Sutherland House was a perfect retreat, poetic in its ambience. In terms of a Bed and Breakfast experience, there can be no finer choice. — Monique Franz

We had an exceptional stay at the Sutherland House. The check-in process was seamless, allowing us to arrive at our own convenience. The property is beautiful and meticulously maintained, yet very comfortable and inviting. They have a coffee & tea bar with treats, a beverage fridge with ice and soda, and a hot and cold water dispenser in the hall for their guests. The rooms are beautifully decorated and outfitted with robes, glasses, an ice bucket and snacks for your in-room enjoyment. The bed was very comfortable! The carefully prepared 3 course breakfast was served at 9am sharp. The table was beautifully set, yet the atmosphere was relaxed and warm. It was absolutely delicious both days and the staff was so kind and hospitable. Both Faye and Fran love what they do, and it shows. We both agreed, it was the best breakfast we've had at a B&B! There is lots to see and do in the Finger Lakes region, and we will be back to stay at the Sutherland House to continue our exploration. Thank you!

Our stay at Sutherland House was outstanding! The house was beautifully furnished with much attention given to the smallest of details. We loved our room (Lillian's Loft). The little extras such as cookies, beverages, restaurant menus and brochures were much appreciated. The grounds were lovely as well and the total atmosphere was tranquil and relaxing. Maria's breakfast presentation was wonderful, and we so enjoyed the fruit, quiche and pancakes. It was fun to chat with the other guests as well. It was a wonderful way to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary, and we will recommend Sutherland House to everyone. Thank you so much! Ken and Sue Gunsalus
