Detailed Reviews
Loved it here and already planning a return trip. It is a bit rustic, so it’s important to know that you might have to kill a spider or two and that it’s not a spa. IHuge common area with board games, books, a fireplace that must be lovely in the winter. We had a lovely time drinking wine by the falls, eating delicious home cooked meals by the innkeeper Michael, and socializing with the other guests and employees. We had gloriously hot showers after our hike and swim at the local lake, and slept the best we have in months with the window open, cool mountain air, and the sound of the falls. Truly a restorative getaway!

we lodged two nights at The Inn, which is a twenty-minute car ride to Tanglewood. The facility served as a grist mill in years past, and innkeeper Michael couldn't be friendlier or more accessible. We stayed in Room 11 on the front side of the inn, it was very quiet and led to a wonderful night's sleep. The waterfall is not audible from the front side, so if you're looking for that constant rush, request a room on the river side. We arrived late both nights and enjoyed a glass of wine on the terrace. We chose to breakfast at a local bakery (Blueberry Hill Cafe) which was quite good. The Inn at Shaker Mill is cost-efficient and restful - a good combination!

The nature that surrounds Shaker Mill was music to my soul.
I gathered here for a weekend with 21 fellow yogi’s and we handed over our electronics for 72 hours - willingly ;) it was a digital detox yoga retreat.
This experience was beautifully supported by the great variety of ways to interact with Mother Earth available at Shaker Mill.
The sound of moving water that emanated from the creek inspired waterfall behind the home offered a great sense of peace. It was an epic meditation location.
The dining hall opened us up to a sense of closeness and connection; it was also the perfect space for doing workshops and playing games.
As we gathered in the common area for yoga and chanting sessions the residents always treated us with great care and attention - it was a full on family vibe.
I was deeply inspired by the pond which was filled with wildlife resembling a band of wind and string instruments.
We also found the fire pit and hammock to be wonderful relaxation locations.
And it’s close to some unique activities. We went hiking, found a rope swing on a beautiful lake. . . And one day I went rouge and ended up at a race, speeding in a go kart around the kiddie track - my inner child was quite pleased!
Shaker Mill will always hold a place in my heart ♥️

How on Earth does this place not have poorer reviews? Something seems deeply amiss...
My partner booked a room here, looking for an affordable base for us to explore the Berkshires. He was warned the place was "rustic." This place isn't rustic; it's neglected. I have stayed at plenty of rustic places -- from Burma to Mexico to Uganda and beyond. But this place is more dirty, dank and dark than even the cheapest hostels I've stayed at in my travels - at ten times the price. I truly don't mind a few bugs or scratchy sheets. The room had copious cobwebs, a dirty bathroom, and was so dark and dank the bedding felt almost wet. The air smelled faintly of mildew. The owners must be aware of this, since we were warned if we had asthma it would not be a safe place to stay. The hallways, commons spaces, and outdoor grounds have random crap strewn about, as though you were staying at a mild hoarder's home. Most disturbingly, none of the three people we saw working in the property wore masks in the common areas, despite signs advising guests to do so. We left and stayed at a proper inn up the street.
It's really a shame. The old mill is a stunning historic building situated in a beautiful spot. Without serious changes, no one should pay more than $15 a night here.

Response from Della Lazarus, Guest Services / Front Office at The Cascades

We were surprised to find Texas Nomad's review on Trip Advisor, considering that we had extended ourselves just 90 minutes before she arrived to offer her a room at the last minute. On that particular night, we were expecting many other guests who would fill up all of our available rooms, but we hurried to make this one last room available for her and her partner. It is true that, in our brief phone call, we described the Inn as rustic in order to be sure that she understood that our two hundred year old building does not offer a sterile, “cookie cutter” experience as might be offered by a chain hotel. We thought that our communication had been successful and that Texas Nomad understood that she would be staying at a charming, but quirky lodging. Clearly she did not understand the type of experience that we try to provide. It is possible that, for the 20 minutes when she was present at the Inn, she saw several unmasked staff members. We require staff to have frequent COVID tests and know that all of our staff are and have been COVID free, but at the moment that Texas Nomad saw those staff members, they were probably taking a brief break from wearing their masks, while practicing social distancing. Almost all of our reviews speak to the uniqueness and charms of our establishment. Guests get a comfortable, clean room at a reasonable price, especially when compared to other lodgings in the Berkshire area. In fact, most of our guests tell us, upon leaving, that they hope to return soon to the Inn. Interestingly, on the very night of Texas Nomad’s aborted stay, another couple took the same room and were delighted with their accommodations. Thus, we are puzzled by the tone of this person’s review, especially since her money was promptly refunded to her in full. It remains important to us to be sure that people such as Texas Nomad do not book a room with us as we want to always be able to provide a welcoming and satisfactory experience for our guests when they stay at the Inn at Shaker Mill Falls.

My family of about 20 rented out the entire Inn for Thanksgiving and it was one of the best Thanksgivings we've ever had. Michael gave us full access to the kitchen which made all our cooking go incredibly smoothly. The space was great, especially the beautiful living room area that looked out to the falls. We found a great hike only 8 miles away. I was able to easily run into Pittsfield to pick up some groceries, and my father-in-law was able to fly into Albany which is only 45 minutes away. We were able to totally avoid all the crazy Thanksgiving traffic. Perfect location.

Michael is a lovely man and a generous soul who made our experience renting the Inn out so wonderful. We had such a great retreat there with everyone feeling so cared for and safe in his beautiful place. His spirit watched over us as he left us alone to do deep meditation work and was unobtrusive but there if we needed anything. The land was perfect for a quiet, deep time for our participants and the whole staff was so helpful and kind. Sitting by the stream, eating outdoors, gathering in the yard, it was all perfect and serene. His spirit is infused in everything there and he is so supportive and open to any kind of healing work. He lives a life of service and is truly happy to help people grow and flourish on his land. THank you Michael!

+1
We had a group getting together that has not been able to do so since the pandemic, and wanted an outdoorsy space to get together, maintain distance, and enjoy the nature. This is just on the cusp of reopening - everyone had to wear a mask in all common areas and social distance. For this reason, we did not have meals prepared by the Inn or meal times together. Michael was understanding of our needs, and gave us all the liberties we needed to have a good time. Property is really something else, and in proximity to many things to do all year around - we visited Lake Queechy which was refreshing and very fun. Granted this was in the midst of a pandemic and reopening, but there are certainly places that the interior could be cleaned/improved... all takes money and more staff. If you are coming with a large group and have specific/unique needs, or the easy-going travel type this would be a nice place for you.

We booked in Aug 2024 for Dec 31 2023 and Jan 1 2024 and received an email confirmation. When we arrived on Dec 31 after a 4 hour drive, we found that despite the email confirmation, we were not expected and the Inn was completely rented out to a family. The staff eventually found us a room (after I stood outside in the cold with the dogs for 30 mins) but it was like intruding on a private family event so we would be confined to it and the room was too small for the dogs to even lie down. The wardrobe was full of trash so we could not put our bags in there and there were no towels and a small curtained off toilet. The owner texted and tried his best to offer other options - stay at Best Western for Dec 31 (not our idea of the idyllic evening we had hoped for, and never easy with the dogs) then stay an extra night (not possible with our work schedules). In the end we just drove the 4 hours straight back home in the dark and had our worst ever New Year’s Eve! I hope everyone enjoys their stay there with their pups but I STRONGLY STRONGLY recommend you call and confirm your booking verbally to avoid our nightmare.

Dirty and noisy. We’ve known this inn for 50 years and it caters to NY city folks. Plywood walls and poor sound proofing makes sleeping here interesting!
Food is served family style and tends towards local produce and cheap wine.
The central fire pit is fun and can be a nice gathering spot.

We had a lovely family vacation at the Inn. It is an old mill with rustic rooms. There are sitting areas and lots of books. The living room has a beautiful view of the stream. The Inn is in a perfect location to enjoy the Berkshires while being in a quiet rural setting.
