There is a lot to like about Onteora: the lovely location, the serene feel, the view of the mountains, the yummy breakfast. But, a recent stay left me feeling like the place needed some care and attention to warrant the high prices. The decor of the rooms felt dated, even a bit haphazard, with beds are on the hard side of firm. It felt like no one had paid much attention to the details that can make a stay feel worth hundreds of dollars. Clearly, a curtain rod had fallen down in our room and while a new one was installed no one bothered to spackle over the holes. The counters and cabinets in the bathroom showed signs of water damage. While these things won't ruin a weekend, they underscore the feeling that the owners' main priority is the wedding business and that weekend guests are just sort of a high priced after thought.…
My husband and I enjoyed a lovely mid-winter retreat here last weekend. The mountain house is perched on the side of the mountain, with amazing views of the valley and the mountains beyond. The whole place had the mountain lodge vibe just right - from the huge fireplace in the main room, to the exposed wooden beams, and yes, a moose head (I think it was moose. Some sort of large deer-like animal). You really do feel isolated, in a good way. Our room had floor-to-ceiling windows where we sat in comfy chairs and whiled away a few hours just reading, sipping tea, and admiring the view. Our room also had an air-flow tub with a window overlooking the same view. There were a few other guests other than ourselves, so it felt like we had the place to ourselves! There's a cozy fire in the fireplace downstairs - if it weren't for COVID I probably would have sat down there instead! There's also a game room downstairs with mini fridges to store food and beverages for later, coffee and tea-making supplies, aa comfy couch, and a selection of games and puzzles. I also discovered a sauna tucked back there. Breakfast was delicious both mornings: the first day we got poached eggs with Canadian bacon, and the second day we got French toast with clouds of real whipped cream and maple syrup. A real treat! All of this served in the spacious dining room with that beautiful view. The staff were friendly and accommodating. One thing that would have made this visit perfect would have been comfy robes, but that's a small thing! I would recommend bringing your own so you can laze around your room in comfort (or visit the sauna downstairs).…
My wife and I stayed at Onteora for two days in midweek. The fall colors were at a height and trees were gorgeous. Onteora is in a location of surpassing beauty, surrounded by lovely woods. We stayed in the "Overlook" cottage, which has a breathtaking view from its patio and from the room itself, which has huge windows. The room's bathroom was huge and well-designed. The main hotel has a lovely sitting room, a big patio outside, and a deck to sit on in back. We found the service to be excellent. We were left alone when we wanted, but the manager provided what we needed when we asked. Currently, the hotel is not serving food because of the pandemic. There are a number of restaurants in the area, especially in Woodstock which is a short drive. I would highly recommend this property.…
Just attended my niece's wedding at Onteora Mountain - it was wonderful! Everything went smoothly, the staff is delightful, the food delicious and innovative (those artichoke/spinach crostinis and watermelon cubes - yum!), the venue is breathtaking! We got to use all three areas: the sun room, the pavilion and of course the patio. With the lush vegetation all around, it made it even more beautiful. Thank you for all your hard work that contributed to a magnificent wedding party!
Stayed two nights for our anniversary in the Black Dome room, which is a little set away from the main building and absolutely perfect. Modern amenities all around, wood burning fireplace and huge bathroom. The property is stunning and in the middle of beautiful mountain scenery both close and afar into the mountains. The owners are very welcoming and the location is just far enough away from the madness of everyday life but close enough to food, activities and landmarks. Will def be back! A+++++
The view from the outside wedding area is breath taking. The bride's entrance down the stairs is special if not a little precarious. The staff are very attentive and are constantly providing the variety of hors d'oeuvres arranged by the hosts. The extensive seating area for the indoor meal and dancing is very nice and there is a lovely terrace again with spectacular views of the mountains.
Just had my daughters wedding there, could not be more amazing. The Venue amazing, house beautiful including could accommodate both families. The food awesome but the best of all was Jeremy. He ran the whole wedding so professionally and with so much care, every detail was not missed.I would definitely give this a Five star!!
WHAT A VIEW OF THE CATSKILL MOUNTAINS!!! This location has first rate arrangements for a wedding. The outdoor space looking towards the mountains is spectacular, and the reception structure is roomy and perfect for dancing. The Onteora Mountain House was formerly the mountain retreat of the Hellman family, and the interior retains some of the lovely furnishings from that time. We didn't stay here because they only have 7 bedrooms, but what a great place to come for a relaxing weekend.
Onteora is nestled in the woods with incredible views and spacious, airy rooms - ours equipped with a large jacuzzi tub under a picture window. We were the only guests for the weekend and treated warmly by Bob, one of the owners, who made us a delicious breakfast each morning and struck the right balance of being informative but not an interloper. I know this place is renowned for weddings but as a NYC couple, this was the perfect getaway from the sleet & slush of city streets to enjoy the winter in a cozy, private lodge where we would have been happy to stay in the comfy king-sized bed all day, take in the views and entertain ourselves in the pool room - if not for the allure of the town of Woodstock. We can't wait for our next getaway to Onteora! Thank you, Onteora! ~Hope
We attended a wedding at Onteora this past weekend and were there for both the Rehearsal Dinner on Friday night as well as the wedding on Saturday. We didn't stay at the Inn (however the wedding party did and said it was lovely), but got to see a fair amount of the grounds and buildings. The views are spectacular, the staff is pleasant and helpful and the facilities are excellent. If I had to complain about one thing it would be that the heat lamps used in the pavillion for the wedding dinner were inadequate to heat the room on a very windy, chilly night.
