For a lodging and natural hot mineral bath experience that reflects the coziness, free spirit and creative vibe of its host town, the Pelican Spa is hard to beat. It's a loose collection of vintage, low-rise motel-style buildings (plus one two-story structure) on the east end of central Truth or Consequences, all within an easy walk of great eateries, galleries and offbeat shops as well as a wonderful historic movie house, the El Cortez, which shows first-run films. My accommodations in the property's Pam building were spacious, comprising separate living room and bedroom areas separated by an efficiency kitchen with a stove and a surprisingly large refrigerator. While the plaster walls, epoxied concrete floors and a few of the fixtures showed some imperfections typical of an older structure, I found the fresh, bold colors and décor both inspired and fun, and totally in keeping with the eclectic and welcoming nature of the surrounding village. The chain hotels closer to the freeway cost just as much, if not more, for predictably bland rooms and zero walking convenience to much more than a Walmart and a Denny's, which kind of defeats the purpose of visiting a place with a personality as singular as that of Truth or Consequences. Shift your focus to adventure and relaxation by the time you arrive, go with the geothermal flow... and just enjoy.

Our small room was brightly colored (persimmon). Mediocre bed. Towels have seen better days (I think). Indoor bath. A hot tub is available, which we did not use. I wouldn't stay here again. But if you like funky ...

Because I grew up in New Mexico, I knew that Truth or Consequences used to be called Hot Springs. I was passing by on a drive towards home, but I never thought of staying at a spa until I noticed the price of this place and decided to try it for a night. Funky and friendly is how this place felt. My room in the pink building (they have a number of building within a block or so of each other) was almost what you'd call a suite: a sitting "room" with a table and four chairs, a kitchen area with a microwave, small fridge, cabinets and basic dishes, a tiny bathroom, a sort of uncomfortable bed, and a very loud window air conditioner. The furniture was mismatched, there were tacky pictures on the wall, and everything was a riot of bright color. The tiny bathroom didn't have a hair dryer, and he only place to plug mine in was in the main room, which didn't have a mirror. All this, plus use of the spa for 12 hours a day, was a great deal for $65 including tax and a $3 credit card surcharge. The spa is in the same building as a full kitchen, which guests are welcome to use. The spa rooms are basic: a plain gray concrete tub with a big plastic spigot for the spring water, which pours out quickly. These aren't "hot"... the water was close to body temperature. But the water doesn't smell as it does at many spas, and the minerals in it are supposedly good for all kinds of ailments etc. This is in the middle of the tourist area of T or C (as new Mexicans call it), with a number of restaurants, galleries, and tourist traps nearby. I got a huge breakfast for $9. I'm planning to come back for a few days when I have a chance. I'd also like to go to the Spaceport America visitor center close by, where Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic launches flights into space from this spacey town.

Very well maintained motel. Bed was very high off the ground and comfortable, which was nice. Lovely courtyard with shade. Coffee in the lobby. Donuts. Didn't get a chance to do a private soak but those tubs were deep and spacious and the water seemed free flowing.

In our room, the shower was outside, out doors! The toilet had been added to a kitchen. There was 4 or 5 inches of space between the toilet and the walls. If you closed the door, you bumped your knees. The tile around the toilet ended with a sharp edge about 3 inches from the front of the toilet, then there was concrete for about a foot, then another sharp edge where the kitchen tile started. Also, between the kitchen and the bedroom there was a step. The bed sagged in the middle. There was no ice. We have traveled all over the world and the U.S. and this was one of the worst.

Funky colorful retro bohemian inn with a feeling of being on vacation at the beach! The staff are friendly and work hard to solve any issues that come up. I want to thank Mark, Lora Lee and Liz for making us feel right at home and taking good care of us!

As the reviews have noted before mine, very very shabby and in bad need of updating and thorough cleaning. I am grateful no roaches and, trust me, I checked very well throughout. Electrical conduit is all over th walls for outlets and there uis internet and cable tv cords running all around walls. None of the floor coverings match...cement, tile, different tile, linoleum and sometimes in same room. I had an outdoor shower only. I saw that the room boasted one but I presumed in addition to an indoor one. I was wrong. Its January and Not outdoor shower weather. The linens are all old and not one sheet, towel, lamp or piece of furniture is a matching set. Its all just put together and labeled "quirky". Let me tell you it ain't quirky, its very shabby and needs a good cleaning. I brought bleach wipes with me and re-cleaned everything. My bleach wipes still came out dirty. Did I mention my room is off a busy street so traffic is ongoing till around midnight then starts up again around 6am. Curtains are homemade/thrift store finds and none are matching because why change the motto of the place right? Car headlights have no hardship getting thru these threadbare curtains. Next let's discuss the baths. Those are kept up nicer than the rooms. The towels are very clean and sanitized. However, the baths are cement tubs with their bottoms that do not slant to the drain. I did notice this when putting in rubber stopper but did not pay much attention UNTIL...I got into the tub after filling it and could see hair that does not belong to me floating in the water. I felt bad to have to let all the water drain only to be refilled but God knows I couldn't lay in water with other peoples hair (from where makes me gag) floating around. Each bath has a alternate shower faucet that is plumbed with regular city water. Remember I had no indoor shower in my room so this is my only option. From then on, I turned on the shower, sprayed everything down and then let the shower head rinse the whole tub. Then I filled it and would get in. Laying there soaking, I noticed the black mold starting to grown where the wall and cement tub meets. Why they didn't paint walls with special bathroom paints that is specifically deigned to be in moisture areas is beyond me. So basically I was also doing housekeeping work in my room and in the baths prior to soaking. Since the baths are free with the room, then I was kinda trying not to spend more money elsewhere. Being cheap/cost efficient has scarred me now and I paid for that decision.

Great stay. Dog friendly. Super friendly staff. Cute town. We stayed in the Persimmon Room. Huge bed, private patio, and a nice living room. It was right next to the courtyard and the spa. The spa bath are all private rooms. The restaurant next door is awesome. Great Italian food.

We were looking forward to a nice stay and a nice soak, but we were disappointed in every way imaginable. We were in a "unit" that they called Post Street. Our cost was $172. It was just 2 of us, but this is what was available. It was a double wide trailer that someone tried to fix up and cover with bright paint and eclectic decor.....but it was still a dirty trailer in a questionable part of town. There was a locked gate, but this lock did not function, and double locks on the doors. Outside the doublewide trailer were piles of discarded junk, basically you were looking at a junkyard. Inside it was stale and smelly. The dishes had dried food on them, the skillets were very old teflon coated that was all completely scraped up and the finish flaking off. The windows were so filthy it was dull to look out. The kitchen sink was dirty as was just about everything in the kitchen. Thank goodness we had out own gear to use and cook with. The table cloth had dried on food from previous guests. In the main bathroom there was no window covering, the sink vanity was an old dresser and when I leaned in the drawer front fell off just missing my foot.....a heavy chunk of wood with nails sticking out. Back at the "Spa" we were again in disgust. The old concrete tub was very unappealing. Not cleaned at all. Because it is old porous concrete, most likely harboring all sorts of nasty stuff. The area for changing was also filthy. Blobs of dust and hair balls in the corners and old used tissues....... Myself and other guests were left waiting for service at the tubs with no-one around. Checking in was the same standing and waiting for service. When I checked out, the women at the desk never asked "How was your stay?"But I explained our griefs calmly and with concern and gave her the list, expressing that whoever they had cleaning for them was not cleaning at all. I was not offered compensation or reimbursement of any sort for this horrible experience. Upsetting to have paid this overpriced amount.

This was our fifth stay at the Pelican, and we would love to love it. Alas, while the private tubs provided the same soothing hot springs experience, our accommodations, the Persimmon Suite, had slipped over the line from fun-funky to shabby. Granted, our bed was comfortable, made up with good linens, but there were holes in the plaster, the door to our private patio stuck, and the patio itself sported discarded furniture. Except for a few spots, such as the floor underneath the dining table, our room was clean when we arrived, but was never cleaned again -- not even emptying the trash -- curing our three-day stay. We would give three stars (just average) for the room, but five for the soaks. If you do decide to give the Pelican a try, book one of the four rooms inside the gate (Persimmon Suite, Turquoise Suite, Blue Room or Aqua Room -- with its own soaking bath but right next to the office), which enable you to soak whenever you want.
