Star Hill Inn is such a unique place. I used to travel back and forth from Colorado to NM on business, when I discovered the Star Hill Inn, run by Phil Mahon and Rae Ann Kumelos. It was a lovely place, and I learned a lot from them about our night skies from them. Because I had to travel to NM every month, I began to plan my trips around stays at the Star Hill Inn, and I eventually met my husband-to-be there. The cabins were homey, spacious, comfortable and Phil and Rae Ann were such genuine hosts. It was a relaxed atmosphere - you could really let your hair down - and it was wonderful in any season. It was a great place to walk, and Phil and Rae Ann often served pies and cakes on the observatory deck at night. It was just one of those places that was magical. A rarity. After 2004, I had to move far away and never got a chance to go back. I have heard that it may no longer be in business. It doesn't look like their website is active any longer. It would be a real shame if it was gone... Anyway, that's my review. Top stars!!!

I took my family up to the United World College for a chess tournament. We stayed at the Star Hill Inn the night after the tournament ended. It was about 20 minutes from Las Vegas, NM. It's a nice place. We rented a 2-bedroom cabin. A bit dated, but very clean, and fully equipped kitchen to cook. It is in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristos, nestled among Ponderosa Pines. There were turkeys, deer, and other small game we saw while we were there. That night, we did the one hour star tour with Phillip, the owner. He had a Meade telescope (I believe 14" diameter) and saw Saturn, Mars, open and globular clusters, whirlpool galaxies, double stars. It was alot of fun. My boys (9 and 11), wife, and I all really enjoyed it. There's normally a two night minimum stay, and he has been there for 20 years. He is looking to eventually move on. If you enjoy astronomy at all, and are going to be in the neighborhood, I recommend it.
