We went on safari 8 years ago and thought our trip to Africa was perfect then- until now, for this trip, when we came this time to Mala Mala. It is the perfect place!. Mala Mala is the place that I believe began the safari classic game drive experience and Mala Mala continues to provide an extraordinary personal and professional... More

Everything was perfect from the friendly welcome on arrival to the send off from their own airstrip. The staff were wonderful, the accommodation spotless and the food delicious. As to the real reason you go there, to see the wild animals of Africa.........stunning!! And made all the more special by having the same knowledgeable ranger throughout our stay.

This is bond doubt one of he best experience of the wild . We had Ollie as our ranger and Mala Mala has your personal ranger taking you on rides . Very friendly and a very good man . We saw the big 5 repeatedly and got close to the big 5 on various occasions . Excellent food and high... More

Definitely the place if your primary goal is wildlife viewing. We chose to lave early and have a continental breakfast in the bush. Had our best viewings that way. Great leopard viewings including a litter of two 2-month olds. They limit the number of vehicles based on species and age, never more than 3. Great for viewing the big five.... More

We had a wonderful stay at Mala Mala Main Camp. The camp is a bit of a luxury hotel in the bush. The rooms, main dining lodge, bar and outdoor veranda are all terrific. We had 3 bathrooms in our lodging and a view of the waterhole with regular game coming to it. We were in Room 25. Tim was... More

This was our 4th visit to Mala Mala & was like coming home to familiar people & surroundings! Things are slowly changing & it is evident that more local people are being employed in positions of trust- a good thing. Our room was as usual clean, tidy & very comfortable with lovely views over the river where we could see... More

Whow! From the greeting at the airstrip through to farewell, this game reserve leaves nothing to chance. We stayed at main camp in a huge suite with 2 bathrooms overlooking the reserve where impala, giraffe, baboons, Nyala, kudu, elephant, saddle billed stork roamed passed. Our ranger/tracker Benson was awesome - he found all big five on day 1! We watched... More

The room was HUGE and very clean and functional. The only thing I might have liked to have would be blinds or shades on the windows in the bathrooms. There was a little pathway outside of the hut and I kept imagining people walking by or animals watching me shower, HA! The food and service was exceptional. I think the... More

We stayed at Mala Mala Main Camp for four nights with our two children ages 7 and 9. It was absolutely fantastic. We stayed at several other high-end lodges in the area during this trip and all of us decided that Mala Mala was our favorite. Bottom line is that while the accommodations and dining at Mala Mala are not... More

We had a fantastic stay at MalaMala. The rangers and staff are outstanding. They are friendly, efficient, courteous and will do everything to make your stay enjoyable. The facilities are fine with an African decor and feel. It is lovely to see hippopotamus grazing in the grass outside your patio. The game viewing experience is like none other. Our guide,... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters. MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony. Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound. ... more   less
