    Safari Honeymoon
My partner and I visited the Lion Sands Resort and stayed at the Ivory Lodge (this is the flagship property for the resort) for our honeymoon, which was a wonderful experience. The rooms are private, and beautifully designed and maintained. At this property they also have a small communal bar/lounge, a sun deck for dining and a small restaurant. It’s very intimate and the majority of time you will spend our on the bush tours; or in your room. If you are looking for a more lively, social experience I would suggest the River Lodge which has a large Fire pit , gift shop, and larger bar area (about 20 rooms vs. the 9 at Ivory). The Ivory Lodge however- is without a doubt, more luxurious. The staff is very welcoming and accommodating, offering fresh hand towels after every bush ride, a glass of bubbly, and is happy to escort you to your room before and after experiences to ensure you are safe and fulfill your every need. You have the same tour guide, butler and cleaning staff for the duration of your stay which makes the experience very personal and customized. The food is well presented and flavorful, but you have to be open to trying some eclectic and exotic foods (kudu, ostrich, deer, curries etc.) They are accommodating and will make exceptions (they even have kosher option) but you need to be open to something new. Not for a picky eater. Food and beverage is all inclusive. The details are top notch and the overall experience is very much 5 Star. Would highly recommend this resort, for the perfect 3-4 day vacation (anything longer then that is mundane and repetitive).

    Safari Bliss
Top notch lodge: beautiful architecture, stunning location, spacious and comfortable rooms, tasty food, excellent guides and trackers, great spa, very attentive staff. We arrived at the river lodge straight from J‘burg /our international flight into SA. Within minutes of arrival at the lodge and first game drive we found ourselves decompressing from everyday and corporate stress. Game drives take place for 3 hours twice a day (5.30am and 4.30pm). The safari vehicles are the most comfortable we have ever experienced and with max. 6 people on each vehicle. Cruising through the beautiful landscape open air so comfortably is already a mediative and highly enjoyable experience, the incredible animal sightings (which in our case happened every day during the 4 days we stayed there) is a plus. Our guide Gus and tracker Tony were simply fantastic. Experts in their field leading to sightings of Big 6 + more and incredibly friendly too. It was a pleasure spending our time in the company of such impressive people. During morning drives there is a coffee & snack stop and in the afternoon there are sundowners with snacks. Gus and Tony always took us to incredibly scenic locations to enjoy these treats. We cannot stop rewatching the videos we made and hopefully experience this live again soon. The lodge itself is very stylish and in a stunning location next to Sabie river. Just lounging by the beautiful pool in between game drives is bliss with antilopes grazing nearby and making the whole experience serene beyond words. There is a little gym, a creative gallery and a boutique on-site. The food is mostly very good. Very good snacks are available prior to each game drive in the lounge, breakfast is delicious, for lunch & dinner there are 3 options to choose from followed by a sweet dessert or fruit. The wine and bubbly in the all-inclusive package was ok, but I think there would be better options in the same price class in a country like South Africa. The spa therapists were great. We went for a deep tissue massage, which was heavenly. Also the great Africology products are available in rooms and are sold in the spa. Finally, our butler Elliott was beyond attentive. Once he knew our preferences, he would pro-actively spoil us for example by already heading our way with our favorite drinks for lunch and dinner. Also once he saw how I prepare my morning muesli (with all bran and almond milk) he went on to prepare it for me exactly as I like it. I never felt so breakfast pampered before! A clear COVID protocol was in place incl. daily measures of temperatures, wearing mask in public areas, mini breakfast buffet brought to each table etc.

Sublime Experience post Lockdown - River Lodge Lion Sands
My husband and I booked during the early stages of lockdown. This enabled ordinary South Africans like us, to experience the luxury and kind generosity of Lion Sands. Often one finds that on specials the service providers skimp and offer a lesser service. At NO time did I feel as if we were getting the discounted package. For that I commend the whole team. Lorain the chef produced the most delightful gourmet food. The combinations, the balance and not to forget the wonderful plating provided a wonderful food experience. Solly our butler was kind, attentive and anticipated our every need. Anthony and Andries our guide and tracker were lovely. Trying hard to give us the best possible game viewing, sharing knowledge. The room was immaculate and so well designed - decor delightful. My kind of style. We would be honoured and privileged to have another chance to visit you and hopefully SOON. Thank you

Lions Sands River Lodge was the second place we stayed. The first was amazing so it had a lot to live up to.... and it did. Cleanliness - off the chart. We never had to ask for anything because it was all there for us. We had the two room suite with the plunge pool and, let me just tell you, by the end of our stay they almost had to come physically remove me. The came to clean twice a day while you were on game drive so the rooms were always immaculate. The spa was awesome. We only had pedicures and facials but they pampered up much more than that. It was quiet and serene and very reasonably priced. The food was always amazing. And I felt like I was ALWAYS eating. Snacks on morning game drive, then breakfast, then lunch then snacks on afternoon game drive and then dinner. This is not a complaint. I love to eat and even the snacks were top notch. You get your own personal Butler (ours was David and there will never be anyone better than David <3 ) and they bring you room service if you want and they are your waiter for all meals. He made sure we never went hungry. There is plenty to drink too and they will go above and beyond to make sure you have what you want. Hot tip: I had them bring a bottle of Amarula to the morning drives to spike my coffee with. :) The game drives..... holy cow. Fun, beautiful, interesting, amazing, informative... you pick. But most of all they were FUN!! Gus and Noel were our Guide and Tracker and those two became instant friends. Forget the fact that they know almost everything about every plant, insect, animal in the South African bush but Noel can spot a lion track or the head of an ostrich sticking up out of tall grass from 1 million miles away. He found almost all of the animals for us (I say almost because I really wanted to see a porcupine but I think those are pretty rare) and I got some great shots to print out for my walls at home. We went at the end of August - beginning of September and I honestly think that was the best time to go. It was chilly on the morning drive (I layered up with a jacket and scarf. Plus they bring blankets you can use during the drive.) but by the time you get back to the lodge for breakfast you were down to tank and pants. By the time you were done with breakfast it was HOT and you were ready to lay by the pool until lunch/afternoon drive. Afternoon drive started off hot but chilled up enough by the end to need to put your jacket back on. I say all of this because we didn't know what to pack and ended up packing a bunch of clothes we didn't wear. We went right from the drives to meals so we never wore the dressier clothes we brought thinking we'd clean up for dinner. In case that helps anyone... Anyway 1 bragillion stars. I want to go back and live there forever. <3

If I could sum it up with one word ... I would say, "GO". This was the most incredible place. The staff: Excellent The room: A ++ The guides: Knowledgeable The food: Delicious The drinks: Awesome The animals: Incredible Not only did we have the best time, but we learned so much about the animals, their behaviors and nature. I wish we could have stayed longer. I would highly recommend this property (L.S. Narina) as a South African destination, even if you aren't the "adventurous" type. Go. You will truly be inspired and come home with memories that will last a lifetime. Just, go.

My husband and I have just returned from four very special days at River Lodge - we are return guests and will return again. Every detail is taken care of from dietary requests to personalized water flasks. Rooms are expansive and overlook the river and bushbuck wander past your glass doors while elephants and buffalo visit the river to drink and bathe. Beds are comfortable and the room is refreshed at least twice a day while you are on game drive or at a meal. Guides and trackers are top class adding to the game experience. All staff go over and above. Lion Sands is truly one of the best lodges in the Sabie Sands Reserve.

We stayed at Lion Sands River Lodge in February. Overview: 6 or less pax per vehicle. Vehicles have ports so you can charge your phones. Guide and tracker were great and did an excellent job of finding lions for us and getting us as good of sightings as could be expected with the heavy rains in the area. Platforms are used to enter and exit the vehicle. There is a hide with a proper restroom facility while out on drive. Great morning stops: drink and snack choices in abundance. 2 pools, 1 stunning regular lap pool and 1 at the spa. Staff was extremely welcoming and friendly, from check in, to housekeeping, service at meals and especially at the pool, we can’t say anything bad about the staff. Great group of people. Excellent gym that we actually used. Rooms were modern and comfortable but that’s about all. To be fair, we stayed in the smallest room they offer so I can’t say how the views or rooms are if you choose a more expensive one. The smallest rooms sit very closely side by side and have a tiny deck platform. That’s fine since you are not bound to your room all day and there are plenty of nice places to go (like the stunning pool) but it's worth noting. Overall, it was a good lodge and we enjoyed our stay.

What an amazing experience! As a milestone birthday trip I loved every minute of my stay at River lodge from the beautiful and spotlessly clean rooms, to the wonderful (and almost constant supply of) food and the attentive butler service. The game drives fulfilled the Big 5 and more due to the combined skills of Ozy and Heavy and their excellent company made each drinks stop fun. The spa treatments and a night in Kingston treehouse topped off an unforgettable holiday.

We LOVED our guide, Simon, and our tracker, Culture! They gave us the most magical experience! The animals were incredible, and our team was so respectful of them as well as knowledgeable about them! We stayed in the treehouse one night and it was PERFECT! We loved our butler, Johannes! He was the sweetest man with the best smile! We met the operations manager, Morgan, who was incredibly friendly and a pleasure to chat with! Vickie, the guest artist was the sweetest! Amanda from the gift shop was a doll! My daughter and I recently did our safari at the River Lodge (30 and 60th birthday celebrations) and could not have been happier or more impressed. From our pickup at the airport by our guide Pierre, to our enthusiastic greeting by Amanda (hope I got that right), to all the wonderful experiences, it could not have been better. The facility and accommodations are top notch. Our room was super comfortable and spacious and had everything you could need or want. We had a private deck overlooking the river and at times you could possibly view elephants, water buffalo, monkeys and baboons. Speaking of monkeys, watch your bread, as they are not afraid to jump up on your table. One morning we had baboons on our deck and roof. Our butler Nrobi was so nice and very attentive to our every need. She quickly learned our preferences and we seldom had to ask for anything as she had a very good idea of what we would want. She was a tireless worker, we would see her early in the morning for breakfast and she was ever present at lunch and dinner. Our guide Pierre was super friendly and was unbelievably knowledgeable when it came to animals, birds and plants. He gave us plenty of information and education as to how the animal and plant kingdom work together. He was very attentive to our individual interests be it elephants, birds or types of trees we were seeing. And see we did, we were able to have multiple sightings of all of the Big 5, not to mention more wildlife (big and small) than I can remember. Our tracker Joe was incredible also, he would spot the smallest of creatures that were hard for us to even see right on top of them. He was very adept at spotting tracks and finding all of the animals we wanted to see. The entire staff was always so upbeat and helpful, from our greetings on returning from our drive, to the food staff, the gift shop and customer service . If there was anything you wanted all you had to do was ask. I would highly recommend anyone to stay here if you want an unbelievable safari experience .

This was an extraordinary family visit! The venue is wonderful, as are the meals and the people. Not to take anything away from rest of the staff, because they are wonderful, but the guide group of Lucia and Norman were a spectacular safari team! Not only are they wonderful people, but their team skills and approach to tracking and viewing these beautiful animals is extraordinary. Their knowledge and passion for their jobs, and providing outstanding customer service is obvious, and just amazing! They were so fun, and they were so good! All six of us were in awe!
