I have fished with Chris Taylor and his guides on and off for over 10 years on the San Juan. He and his guides are the best guides you will find on the San Juan. I have stayed and fished other lodges but Fishheads is the best in my opinion. Chris's staff in the kitchen is great and the food they serve is first rate. I have for 6 different times taken client groups of 14 to 20 people their on business fishing trips and they have always done a great job. The best thing is you don't have to know how to fly fish to catch 9 to 20+ fish a day. I have been fishing for 20+ years and took my wife for her first time and with Chris as her guide she out fished me! Barb Wilmart the shop manager is a great lady her husband Gary was one of the first guides I used on the river. Chris, at that time was one of Gary's guides so he learned the river from one of the best. Since then Gary is retired and Chris has opened Fishheads. I can keep going on with stories but I suggest you give them a try I don't think you will be disappointed especially with the newly renovated rooms. Good Luck and Keep a Tight Line, Bob C.

Fishheads on the San Juan River is the best. The lodging meets all your needs, fly shop well stock, food in the restaurant fills your belly and the guides are the hardest working on the river. They will put you on fish in all conditions. No need to look anywhere else.

We booked this trip for our son’s 12th birthday, and lets just say he can’t stop talking about how it was the best birthday ever. We met our guides, Marcus and JB, after a wonderful breakfast at the cafe. We spent a full 8hrs on the water. The guides made sure to keep our party together. JB was extremely patient with our son, teaching him some techniques and making sure that he caught fish. It was truly an amazing family trip that we wouldn’t change a thing about. The rooms themselves are nothing fancy (it’s a fishing lodge), but they were clean and have an amazing view. Ladies, I recommend you bring your own hair dryer. They may have them to borrow, but I didn’t see one in the room. Overall, top notch trip with rock star guides! Thanks Marcus and JB for helping make our son’s birthday one to remember!

Where to begin… I feel obligated to share my groups’ experience at fisheads in hopes to at the very minimum warn fellow fishermen to go in with low expectations. Our party of four scheduled a two night stay with a full day float all inclusive package a month before our reservation. Fisheads was aware that we would be flying in to the runway located about 2 miles from their establishment, and we had arranged for transportation to the lodge. We arrived this Friday and long story short our transportation to the lodge had fallen through. No worries we thought, someone from fisheads would certainly be willing to pick up their guests. We called and were given many different numbers to call for a ride and nothing worked out. After standing on the runway for an hour we ended up having to spend $120 cash to get someone from fisheads to drive up to the runway to pick us up. We arrive at the lodge and see tons of vehicles parked outside. We would find out the next morning that there was a 70 man fishing tournament going on this weekend on the river and would lead to disaster for us. I’ll get that in a minute. We checked in to our rooms and headed to have our prescheduled prime rib dinner. We all ordered our beef medium rare, but we were served a well done prime rib with rock hard baked potatoes. I will provide a picture if I can. After sending back our potatoes for more cooking and eating a leathering piece of meat we headed for bed. The next morning, we met our guides in the parking lot and learned how big of a deal this fishing tournament was. Our guides told us that there would be boats all over the quality water and every fishing hole would be taken so they recommended our best bet was to change our float to the lower San Juan. Okay, we all agreed even though they said it would cost an extra $50 a person. Let me stop here and just say even the most basic of customer service would have prompted fisheads to warn us about this tournament that would totally change our trip. We floated for 9 hours down the lower river and between myself and the other gentleman on my boat we netted 11 fish nothing over 15 inches. The fishing was horrendous. Midway through the float we hadn’t changed our midge on our nymph rig once even though we weren’t catching fish. I recommended perhaps trying some new flies to our guide but he simply said we were using his most productive fly. I will not harp on the guide too much as he was a very nice guy out there paddling in the heat working for his family, but the quality of the guided trip was the worst I can even imagine. Not what we had flown in for. After we got back to the lodge it took everything in us not to demand our money back because of the impact this tournament had on our trip. With the combination of the horrible food, non existent customer service, and lack of accountability from management, we have decided fisheads won’t ever get another dime from these fishermen. For $2300 we expected more. It is shocking that this is an Orvis “endorsed” establishment, and we will be contacting Orvis hoping they will go audit the quality of this location that bares their name.

They have decided to close the restaurant for lunch and walk in dinners. You need to make reservations by 9:00 the morning of but preferably the night before. Open for breakfast from 6:00-9:00. For dinner they do not have an open menu but daily specials and the normal enchiladas, burgers, sandwiches and salads. The proportions are huge and food is very good. It is hard to believe you can get this type of meal in the middle of nowhere. The concept of all inclusive for fly fishing, room and meals works great. Had a great time and caught a boat load of trout on dries and some nymphs. Thanks to the entire staff of Fisheads from kitchen to the fantastic group of guides. We had seven fishermen in our group and all enjoyed the entire trip. Thanks again and see you as quick as I can get back.
