#1 of 2 B&Bs / Inns in Cimarron
Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Cimarron, New Mexico, is the historic inn, Casa del Gavilan. A place of spirit--where hawk and eagle soar--this grand adobe villa was built about 1912 for Jack and Gertrude Nairn, formerly of Hartford, Connecticut. When completed, artists and writers from far and wide came to enjoy the Nairns' elegant hospitality and to capture the majestic beauty that is New Mexico. With twelve-foot high ceilings, vigas, and eighteen-inch thick walls, Casa del Gavilan (House of the Hawk) is a showplace of Pueblo-revival architecture exhibiting artwork and sculptures by Frederick Remington, Charles Russell, Robert Redbird, and others.Completely surrounded by Philmont Scout Ranch, and a mile from Philmont's base camp, the Casa del Gavilan (also known as the Nairn Place) offers exceptional views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, hiking trails, and the peace and tranquility so rare these days. The guest rooms all have private baths and a full breakfast is served daily.

We had a lovely 4 night stay at Casa del Gavilan. Spectacular views all around the casa - particularly from the Adirondack chairs looking out towards the Tooth of Time. I started every morning with a cup of coffee admiring the views. Antelope and Deer were seen all around the property. The casa itself is gorgeous and if you're into historic building, like I am, you will really enjoy it. Our room had a working wood fireplace which you don't see often. Annie and Bernard are excellent hosts and cooks. They made us feel so welcome and we dined with them 3 out of our four nights. They are professionals. Roasted game hen was a particular highlight. We really look forward to our next stay - hopefully in the summer or early fall when the courtyard is in bloom.

After the impressive scenery from Eagle Nest along the Cimarron River, we found our way to Casa de Gavilan. My younger brother spoke often of his great experiences at Philmont Boy Scout Camp and I looked forward to seeing this place. Philmont exists where high plains meet the mountains. Casa de Gavilan shares this magnificent ground with Philmont. Awesome views of the mountains surround the Casa. The “Tooth of Time” imprinted an iconic image in my mind. Antelope and deer entertained guests as they feed and play within a few yards. We met Allison upon arrival. Allison made our visit so easy and enjoyable. After touring the home, she guided to our room “the Cairn” (which I highly recommend). A huge room with comfortable king size bed. With windows open, we enjoyed the breeze through the room and mountain views. Allison provided coffee, juices and delightful breakfast choices both mornings. Nearby Cimarron offers shopping and meal options for lunch and dinner. It felt like I entered a different time and place where our beautiful and peaceful surroundings encouraged complete separation and decompression from our normally busy lives. We look forward to our next visit to Casa de Gavilan.

Looking for a perfect place to wind down? This is it. After a gorgeous drive from Albuquerque, we were warmly greeted by Allison, who is spot on with answering questions via email beforehand or during your stay. After a thorough tour of the home, we retired to our room to relax. Breakfast both mornings were scrumptious. There are snacks galore in the kitchen, which you have full access to along with a frig where you can store any food items you bring. Fresh coffee was made for us at 6:00 A.M. There are many spots for sitting, relaxing and reading; the living room, the library, the sun porch along with the back courtyard and your room. Games, puzzles and books await your arrival! Nice hiking trails around the property. Cimarron is just 7 miles away if you want to go in for a meal.

We appreciate your review of the Casa del Gavilan. You certainly enjoyed a lot of what the Casa has to offer-hiking the trail, relaxing with a book, and I know that you enjoyed working a puzzle in the library! I hope you enjoyed sitting by the fire as well. We hope you will keep us in mind for your next getaway.

We stay at The Casa every opportunity was can. It is beautiful and peaceful. They always provide a wonderful breakfast and great conversation. There is nothing like sitting on a bench out back and watching the Tooth of Time at sunset! The hummingbirds think the patio is their home! AWESOME!

I was traveling in northern New Mexico with my husband and father. We were checking out Philmont Scout Ranch -- where my father had been several times and had many fond memories of -- and he had been to the Casa del Gavilan before. We saw the National Boy Scout Museum and had dinner at the St. James Hotel. But the highlight was being at the Casa del Gavilan. Allison was a great hostess, welcoming us with a great tour of the casa and all the space we needed to get settled. After dinner, she had built a fire in the living room fireplace, and we joined Allison and some of the other guests for conversation around the fire. The next morning, we got up early for a pre-sunrise hike on some of the walking trails, which was amazing! And when we got back to the casa, she had prepared a delicious breakfast of french toast, fruit & yogurt, and coffee & juice. The room was so nice, with a big bathroom and a very comfy bed. We even had a fireplace in our room! We loved being there and felt totally pampered. I would recommend the Casa del Gavilan to anyone traveling in the area.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Casa del Gavilan, and thank you for your kind words. The evening sitting by the fire and visiting with all the guests was so lovely-I am happy that you three could join the group. The hiking trail must have been wonderful at sunrise! We look forward to your next visit.
