On our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Jan and given a quick tour and shown to our room. The Casa is beautiful and comfortable. We felt at ease joining other guests in the public areas and also free to spend time in our own. We visited Taos and Santa Fe and enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the way but next time we will plan to stay much closer to the property because there is so much to explore in the area. We hiked and enjoyed the incredible views. The breakfast was delicious every morning and kept us going for a long time. Thanks to the the owners and staff!
Where do I begin....We were welcomed by innkeeper Jan Drover who gave us a brief, informative history of the inn before showing us to our room, replete with fireplace, high ceilings with viga's and a cozy bed. We spent the first evening by the fire in the living room talking with other guests. Breakfast our first morning was a delicious Moroccan egg dish, perfectly seasoned and accompanied by fresh yogurt, fruit and for me, gluten free toast. And the coffee was good and strong! After breakfast we hiked the 2 mile trail behind the inn taking in the magnificent mountain scenery. We ate dinner at the St. James Hotel, in downtown Cimarron where they serve fabulous margaritas! Our second and last morning we enjoyed a New Mexican breakfast that was very yummy. Jan, the innkeeper and cook, is truly an inspired chef. We loved the Casa and look forward to returning soon.…
We had wanted to explore the northeast corner of New Mexico and could not have found a better place to stay than Casa del Gavilan. From the moment we arrived, Innkeeper Jan made us feel welcome and part of the “family.” Indeed, with the other guests there, it was like a family reunion: meeting interesting folks and enjoying the beauties the inn has to offer, which are many. We stayed in the Phillips Room, spacious and comfortable, with a wood burning fireplace I wished we could have used (though it was not cold enough for that while we were there) and a huge bathroom. There are several gathering places throughout the inn, all suitably and comfortably furnished, and the courtyard was a lovely place to sit back and take in the plantings and the numerous birds flitting about over a glass of wine. Just outside the back gate is a seating area facing the stunning Tooth of Time mountain ridge, perfect for relaxing and watching the sunset. From the front porch there is a clear view to the east over the Both Jan and Annette were so friendly and helpful, with all manner of information about the area to share, as well as the history of the inn which fills every corner of this wonderful place. We couldn’t have been happier staying here and wished that our stay could have been longer than the two nights we spent. We’ll certainly look forward to returning as soon as we can!…
We only spent one night, arrived late, left after breakfast, but we'll be back! Casa de Gavilan is in an idyllic spot. The inn is beautiful with several common spaces for relaxing. We were warmly welcomed even though we arrived late at night. Our room (Phillips) was comfortable and well-equipped. Huge bathroom. It (along with most of the other rooms) is off a central courtyard. Breakfast was delicious -- frittata with sausage and veggies (served with plant-based sausage for the vegetarians), apple muffins, and yogurt parfaits plus juice and coffee. Portions were just right. Wish we'd had more time to explore the property, both inside and out.
Staying at the Casa was absolutely amazing! Our inkeeper was so friendly, helpful and obliging...so eager to help us enjoy the house, grounds, and town. The house itself is magnificent and impeccably kept, while the rooms are clean, beautifully furnished and spacious, yet cozy. The breakfasts are amazing and I've discovered nothing more relaxing than sipping their delicious coffee outside in the courtyard while watching hummingbirds feed. I can't say enough about the Casa and can't wait to return..truly a piece of heaven!
We stayed at the Casa for two nights. Our host Jan, was kind, knowledgeable about the local area, and an incredible cook. The breakfast each morning was delicious. Jan accommodated our dietary needs, which was made easier since we wrote to her ahead of time. The grounds are stunning; we hiked the 2 mile trail around the property - saw cattle, prairie dogs, and pronghorn antelope. The hummingbirds in the courtyard were so pretty! We enjoyed wandering around the common rooms looking at the art and pictures of the original owner and his family. This is a very special place to unwind, read, make some new friends, and forget about the hustle and bustle of life.
My husband and I stayed at the Casa for our 15th anniversary and we can't say enough good things about it! We arrived at night and were greeted by Jan who had started a roaring fire for us in the main house. We stayed in the Philips room with the fireplace. We were supplied with lots of pinon pine wood that smelled amazing when burning. The inn was clean and full of interesting things to read and look at. Breakfast made by Jan was absolutely delicious! Jan herself is a wonderful innkeeper- thoughtful, kind, hardworking, full of knowledge of the area. There is a small kitchen that guests can use as well as a small fridge for storing items. We hiked the property, walked to main road and back and saw antelope and gorgeous views. If you are looking for a quiet, historic, thoughtful place to relax- this is it. There are no tvs or phone provided in the rooms, which we found refreshing. We had dinner one night at the St. James Hotel and really enjoyed it. There is a new coffee shop in the very small town- be sure to check it out! We will definitely be back to this hidden gem!…
My husband and I recently returned from the Casa and continue to rave about our little getaway! The location can't be beat............quiet, serene and beyond lovely. Jan, the innkeeper, was an excellent hostess and always available for suggestions and great conversation about the history of Casa del Gavalan and its environs. We enjoyed her home style breakfasts and had two tasty dinners at the nearby hotel St. James. Our room was Nairn, the largest and so comfortable in every way. The house itself is a trip down history lane and the cozy fireplace was perfect for our cool evenings. Great hiking nearby with 2 smaller trails on the property.....this is a gorgeous time to visit with all the fall colors at peak viewing. All Covid guidelines are observed and we were very comfortable being guests at this property.…
My family of three stayed at the inn for 2 nights. This place is an oasis right by the mountains and the Tooth of Time; really the best view of this significant Santa Fe Trail landmark. Super vistas from all places on the property - mountains, great view of the Philmont Ranch, and Eastern plains. The patio was a tranquil place to hang out with multiple fountains. Each morning and evening watched the hummingbirds and ate on the patio for take out dinner from the St. James hotel in town. Breakfast was superb - unique menu each morning and gourmet. Ate once in the dining room and once on patio. Excellent! The innkeeper, Jan, was a pleasure to chat with and helpful in many ways. We stayed in the Maxwell/Miranda guest house. Worked well with two bedrooms and Jack n' Jill bathroom. Accessibility is dependent on your particular situation. If 100% electric wheelchair bound, this inn would be difficult to maneuver, but if general mobility issues - then this should work just fine for you. Please contact inn directly to discuss. They were able to accommodate a family member with mobility difficulties and went out of their way to help. This hotel was on top of COVID guidelines and use of masks, gloves, separation, etc.…
Our family had a wonderful stay at this magical place! Jan the innkeeper was so amazing and accommodating we could not have had a better time. The breakfast was delicious and we had a great time exploring the hiking trails. It was peaceful and so beautiful. We will be back!
