Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Cimarron, New Mexico, is the historic inn, Casa del Gavilan. A place of spirit--where hawk and eagle soar--this grand adobe villa was built about 1912 for Jack and Gertrude Nairn, formerly of Hartford, Connecticut. When completed, artists and writers from far and wide came to enjoy the Nairns' elegant hospitality and to capture the majestic beauty that is New Mexico. With twelve-foot high ceilings, vigas, and eighteen-inch thick walls, Casa del Gavilan (House of the Hawk) is a showplace of Pueblo-revival architecture exhibiting artwork and sculptures by Frederick Remington, Charles Russell, Robert Redbird, and others.Completely surrounded by Philmont Scout Ranch, and a mile from Philmont's base camp, the Casa del Gavilan (also known as the Nairn Place) offers exceptional views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, hiking trails, and the peace and tranquility so rare these days. The guest rooms all have private baths and a full breakfast is served daily.

My husband and I recently returned from the Casa and continue to rave about our little getaway! The location can't be beat............quiet, serene and beyond lovely. Jan, the innkeeper, was an excellent hostess and always available for suggestions and great conversation about the history of Casa del Gavalan and its environs. We enjoyed her home style breakfasts and had two tasty dinners at the nearby hotel St. James. Our room was Nairn, the largest and so comfortable in every way. The house itself is a trip down history lane and the cozy fireplace was perfect for our cool evenings. Great hiking nearby with 2 smaller trails on the property.....this is a gorgeous time to visit with all the fall colors at peak viewing. All Covid guidelines are observed and we were very comfortable being guests at this property.

We stayed at the Casa for two nights. Our host Jan, was kind, knowledgeable about the local area, and an incredible cook. The breakfast each morning was delicious. Jan accommodated our dietary needs, which was made easier since we wrote to her ahead of time. The grounds are stunning; we hiked the 2 mile trail around the property - saw cattle, prairie dogs, and pronghorn antelope. The hummingbirds in the courtyard were so pretty! We enjoyed wandering around the common rooms looking at the art and pictures of the original owner and his family. This is a very special place to unwind, read, make some new friends, and forget about the hustle and bustle of life.

My family of three stayed at the inn for 2 nights. This place is an oasis right by the mountains and the Tooth of Time; really the best view of this significant Santa Fe Trail landmark. Super vistas from all places on the property - mountains, great view of the Philmont Ranch, and Eastern plains. The patio was a tranquil place to hang out with multiple fountains. Each morning and evening watched the hummingbirds and ate on the patio for take out dinner from the St. James hotel in town.

Breakfast was superb - unique menu each morning and gourmet. Ate once in the dining room and once on patio. Excellent!

The innkeeper, Jan, was a pleasure to chat with and helpful in many ways.

We stayed in the Maxwell/Miranda guest house. Worked well with two bedrooms and Jack n' Jill bathroom.

Accessibility is dependent on your particular situation. If 100% electric wheelchair bound, this inn would be difficult to maneuver, but if general mobility issues - then this should work just fine for you. Please contact inn directly to discuss. They were able to accommodate a family member with mobility difficulties and went out of their way to help.

This hotel was on top of COVID guidelines and use of masks, gloves, separation, etc.

My wife and I rolled in on a Friday and stayed three nights. In a good way, it felt like a much longer vacation. We did not want to leave, but felt refreshed, rested and amazed at the experience we just had as we drove out of the property on our final day. From our arrival and greeting by Jan, the Innkeeper, until we left, we were allowed to feel as if we owned this wonderful Inn and 200 acres. Our room, connected to the hallway which connected to the library, living room, dining room and kitchen, gave it a feel of our own personal large home during the stay. We took advantage of the available full size fridge to stash our snacks and drinks and frequented the kitchen for coffee, ice, and use of the glasses in the pantry. And….OMG….the wonderful courtyard with the sound of a fountain and constant buzzing of hummingbirds was our favorite spot during our stay. Rocking chairs pointed towards the Sangre De Cristo mountains and the distinct Tooth of Time outcropping, high bar type chairs and table or low slung chairs…they’re all there under the pergola in the courtyard. And all appear to be new. Breakfasts were amazing and a highlight of our days. Jan and Annette are amazing cooks! We had two breakfasts outdoors and one indoors. Our routine was to get up, stroll down to the kitchen for a coffee enjoyed in the courtyard, then hit the scenic two mile loop walk in time to be back for the 8:30am breakfast. Outside of late lunches and dinners in Cimarron, we stayed at the Casa del Gavilan for four days and three nights and enjoyed every moment of it. There are also sitting areas outside of the courtyard and at an amazing area at the Tankhouse Overlook which is a short walk from the Inn on the property. The wildlife experiences were amazing and memorable. All staff were wonderful and I encourage you to visit and have your own unique experience. You’ll want to stay for at least a few days and take full advantage of your time here. We cannot wait to return.

My husband and I stayed at the Casa for our 15th anniversary and we can't say enough good things about it! We arrived at night and were greeted by Jan who had started a roaring fire for us in the main house. We stayed in the Philips room with the fireplace. We were supplied with lots of pinon pine wood that smelled amazing when burning. The inn was clean and full of interesting things to read and look at. Breakfast made by Jan was absolutely delicious! Jan herself is a wonderful innkeeper- thoughtful, kind, hardworking, full of knowledge of the area.
There is a small kitchen that guests can use as well as a small fridge for storing items. We hiked the property, walked to main road and back and saw antelope and gorgeous views. If you are looking for a quiet, historic, thoughtful place to relax- this is it. There are no tvs or phone provided in the rooms, which we found refreshing. We had dinner one night at the St. James Hotel and really enjoyed it. There is a new coffee shop in the very small town- be sure to check it out!
We will definitely be back to this hidden gem!

Staying at the Casa was absolutely amazing! Our inkeeper was so friendly, helpful and obliging...so eager to help us enjoy the house, grounds, and town. The house itself is magnificent and impeccably kept, while the rooms are clean, beautifully furnished and spacious, yet cozy. The breakfasts are amazing and I've discovered nothing more relaxing than sipping their delicious coffee outside in the courtyard while watching hummingbirds feed. I can't say enough about the Casa and can't wait to return..truly a piece of heaven!

This is a beautiful rustic hacienda on the east side of the Sangre’s. There are pronghorn antelope, birds, rabbits, and reportedly more right around the place. Nice short hikes. Great views. Really friendly staff and owners who were there when we visited - felt comfortable and welcoming. We had to leave early, they provided a more than ample delish breakfast to go. Over the top! Our only regret is cdnt stay longer.

Handsome though isolated retreat. Good breakfast. Room was hot and very stuffy as no outside window and thus no ventilation. Check in person neglected to inform of a portable air conditioner available, which would have helped. Also room was not serviced during stay (no fresh towels and bed remained unmade), but since visit was only two days this was not a major problem.

Hello Phil and thank you for taking the time to write a review. We take every review seriously and almost all are five bubbles so we were disappointed to find out that you were not 100% happy. Please see the description of the Beaubien below. Should you have have a suggestion for an edit that would be more clear regarding the room please let me know. Here it is copied directly from our website... "Every inn has a smallest room, and this is ours. This room measures 11x15 feet. There is a single chair in this guest room, while all other rooms have two chairs. While perfectly comfortable for most of our guests, those that desire a bit more space for themselves, or additional equipment, may not be comfortable in this guest room. If in doubt, please discuss your needs with our innkeeper so we can provide you with accommodations best suited to your personal requirements. As the Beaubien guest room only has one window to the sunporch, and no windows directly outside, the room comes equipped with an air conditioner." The check in person was one of the two professional Innkeepers and we try to point out everything the Inn has to offer in each short orientation tour that ends at the guest room. The A/C is large, white, and not hidden. The power is always attached and one just need to push the power button. I'm sorry if this was not clear. As a small 6 room B&B we are not able to provide daily maid service but are always happy to make sure your comfort is met through requests. I hope that we will have another opportunity to impress you as we have continually impressed our guests throughout the season and the years. Blessings for a wonderful summer season!

We had wanted to explore the northeast corner of New Mexico and could not have found a better place to stay than Casa del Gavilan. From the moment we arrived, Innkeeper Jan made us feel welcome and part of the “family.” Indeed, with the other guests there, it was like a family reunion: meeting interesting folks and enjoying the beauties the inn has to offer, which are many. We stayed in the Phillips Room, spacious and comfortable, with a wood burning fireplace I wished we could have used (though it was not cold enough for that while we were there) and a huge bathroom.
There are several gathering places throughout the inn, all suitably and comfortably furnished, and the courtyard was a lovely place to sit back and take in the plantings and the numerous birds flitting about over a glass of wine. Just outside the back gate is a seating area facing the stunning Tooth of Time mountain ridge, perfect for relaxing and watching the sunset. From the front porch there is a clear view to the east over the
Both Jan and Annette were so friendly and helpful, with all manner of information about the area to share, as well as the history of the inn which fills every corner of this wonderful place. We couldn’t have been happier staying here and wished that our stay could have been longer than the two nights we spent. We’ll certainly look forward to returning as soon as we can!

Where do I begin....We were welcomed by innkeeper Jan Drover who gave us a brief, informative history of the inn before showing us to our room, replete with fireplace, high ceilings with viga's and a cozy bed. We spent the first evening by the fire in the living room talking with other guests. Breakfast our first morning was a delicious Moroccan egg dish, perfectly seasoned and accompanied by fresh yogurt, fruit and for me, gluten free toast. And the coffee was good and strong! After breakfast we hiked the 2 mile trail behind the inn taking in the magnificent mountain scenery. We ate dinner at the St. James Hotel, in downtown Cimarron where they serve fabulous margaritas! Our second and last morning we enjoyed a New Mexican breakfast that was very yummy. Jan, the innkeeper and cook, is truly an inspired chef. We loved the Casa and look forward to returning soon.
