We stayed at the Schoone Oordt at the beginning of our holiday in South Africa on our way from Cape Town to Knysna and loved it so much we spent the final 2 nights of our trip back to Cape Town there before our flight home. Alison and Richard have restored and refurbished the property beautifully whilst retaining its original charm and character. The rooms are spacious and well equipped and surrounded by beautiful gardens and a swimming pool. The food is outstanding and the service from their staff is second to none. We were made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. We would highly recommended staying there.
There are not enough superlatives to describe this lovely family run hotel. It has been beautifully restored by the current owners and it is evident of the love and care that went into that restoration. The rooms are beautifully furnished with so many added touches, like candles in the bathroom, emergency kit and cleaning our car before we left.. Alison the owner is really lovely as are all her staff who are a credit to her. We stayed in quite a few hotels on our trip and the staff were all very nice but Alison and her staff were exceptional and nothing was any trouble to them. :Laundry done within hours of our arriving and an excellent dinner and breakfast with both being a little out of the ordinary but delicious. A much more personal place to stay, Alison said she wanted to make it feel you were staying with friends and she certainly has achieved that. A refreshing change form a big hotel. Would highly recommend a stop at this hotel in Swellendam.…
Alison, the owner and chef, is the loveliest host you could wish for. She goes way beyond to make every guest’s stay special and utterly perfect. She is a very talented chef and her breakfast is probably on if the best we have ever had anywhere around the world . A three course gourmet breakfast to remember. Schoone Oordt is a perfect stay if you’re travelling on your own, as a couple or with your family. We recommend hiking the trails in the area , they are well worth it with beautiful scenery. Thank you Alison for your welcome . 🙏
A beautiful place with amazing service from all the staff particularly the owners. You can’t fault the facilities and the great food. We had three nights there and the host and her team were brilliant
We stayed at Schoone Oordt for just one night on a trip around South Africa. We stayed in some amazing places but it was, without doubt, one of the best places we stayed in; the welcome, the fabulous room, comfiest bed, wonderful food, best atmosphere and most interesting garden! Hard to see how anything could have made our stay better unless we could have stayed longer! Swellendam was also a great small town with a lot of interest. Fabulous old church, no less than 3 small museums and some cute shops. We even managed to play a part in rescuing an injured eagle owl whilst there. We would recommend Schoone Oordt to anyone. You will not be disappointed!
The house is undoubtedly beautiful. Like so many hotels of this type you don't stay in the house itself though, which is a bit of a shame. Having said that the garden rooms are lovely, and the food excellent. The pet cat is large enough to be numbered amongst the Big 5.
There is plenty of choice when it comes to accommodation and restaurants in Swellendam and it can be tricky to choose when you are looking to spoil your loved ones. Don’t look any further. I was guided by previous reviews and can only confirm and add to the many glowing recommendations for the Schoone Oordt Country House. Alison’s cooking is a milky way beyond what you would expect to find in a country house and a special treat for all senses - and this comes from a fussy Cape town foodie.
Previous reviews say it all Beautifully restored building with a unique ambience A wonderful welcome and kind attention from all the staff made this a very special stopover. Could have stayed for much longer Alison’s attention detail is seen everywhere, not least in the quality, flavours and textures of the food. The meals were all outstanding
Really lovely hotel. Very quirky with many original features and packed with interesting pieces of furniture . The grounds are very secure and are well groomed. Unfortunately it rained during our stay so we couldn’t use the pool. The bar is very intimate and cosy. The staff could not have been more helpful. Log fires add to the atmosphere Thoroughly recommended
There are plenty of great hotels around and good restaurants too, but we found the combination at this place is what really sets it apart. Alison and Richard bought the property in a very dilapidated state and have fully restored it to it’s current condition. Richard did much of the restoration and fine carpentry himself. The result is a lovely charming country house, an oasis of calm and beauty in Swellendam where my wife and I spent our last two nights in S Africa. We had a beautiful quiet and comfortable room overlooking their garden and fountain. But the food was so good we could hardly wait to go up to the dining area for the delicious meals prepared by Alison and her staff. The 3 course breakfasts and multi course dinners were of the highest standard, both in terms of ingredients used and creative cookery. We found the prices to be quite reasonable as well. My wife is an outstanding cook herself and I usually don’t hear the level of praise from her that I heard about these meals. Do yourself a favor and spend a few days together with Alison, Richard and their staff. You won’t regret it!…
