If your looking to visit, be safe, and not expensive, then you need to stay outside of New York City. Most hotels in the city are overpriced. Your best bet is to stay in New Jersey near a train station. It is least expensive for hotels and it is less frustrating to travel by train to the city and use the cities subways to get where you would like to go. The subway is $2.00 per ride or you can purchase a certain amount on a card to just swipe each time you use it. My daughter lives in the city and swears by Uber to get her where she wants to go at a cheap price and the cars are no older than 10 years old.
Look at reviews for the hotels before you book them, that's what I do.
Hope I was helpful.
