Historic hotel. Just right l for those who like an old fashioned setting but don't require luxury. Food adequate. $36 set price dinner (does not include desert) served by friendly young staff. Nice that this 1876 hotel is still operating.

We were charmed by the great porch and the gentle breezes. We went for the fixed price menu, which is a no brainer. Three out of four of us started with the shrimp and grits. Shrimp was fine, grits were reminiscent of sawdust. The fourth got the oysters, which were good. Looking forward to the famous fried chicken, three out... More

We did not stay at the hotel. We were on a tour and our tour bus mentioned the fried chicken at this place so we had to try it. We were pleased with our meal. Even offered a small kids menu. Thought a glass of wine was priced great as well - none of this $12 for 3 ounces kind... More

Bought tickets for the Civil War talk and dinner at the ticket kiosk at the Washington Street Mall. It was highly recommended by the folks at the kiosk. The historical accounts shared by "Bob", who identified himself as one of the owners of the Chalfonte, was very interesting and engaging. However the meal was very disappointing. Waiters and waitresses were... More

We looked at several place in Cape May as we arrived without a reservation. We are eccentric in that plastic-y motel room style really doesn't do it, and decided to stay at the Chalfonte. We had a reasonable rate, negotiated on the spot, otherwise it might seem a little pricey for an old hotel. The bed and bathroom, shower, were... More

The Hotel is not for everyone-you got to be a minialist and like lots of wood-floors, walls celing fans, breeze coming in through the windows, rockers on the veranda, etc. I really love the breezes slowly blowing the floor lengh curtins across the hallway. Just nice and calming. Rooms are not much more than a clean bed, clean towels and... More

We were at the Chalfonte for a family wedding. The ceremony was held under the weeping willow tree in the garden of the hotel. At first, we were a little disconcerted by "no TV, no alarm clock in the room, etc", but gradually we came to appreciate the lovely ocean breezes through our open bedroom window, the grand public rooms... This Hotel is a must see! Very, very quaint and in its original form. It has that incredible smell that you smelled as a child when you stayed , as we say, "down the shore" back in the 60's. The Fried Chicken is really good and made from a recipe of two Black women from down South. They even sell... More

no TV/telephone, no AC, some bathrooms shared down the hallway, creaky floors. OK, its not the ritzcarlton, but the throwback to the 1920's high life on the beach is like being caught up inside of a Norman Rockwell Americana painting. We loved it. Sitting on the front porch in a rocking chair whittling away the afternoon and early evening is... More
