Detailed Reviews
What an incredible stay we had during Valentine’s Weekend! Bonnie and Lance are excellent hosts and this beautiful B&B is within walking distance of everything you need in Cape May. Less then a block to the beach and the convention center and only 5 min to Washington Street shops and many fine restaurants in the area. We have stayed here all times of the year and always have a great stay and find plenty of things to do around town. Bonnie’s hot breakfasts are incredible, no matter what she is cooking up. ( Belgian waffles, pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, etc) Rooms are well furnished and extremely cozy. All rooms are great, but we love the #5 Mt Vernon. A large and cozy, romantic room with lots of privacy on the top floor. Nice warm comforter and an electric fire place for warmth and coziness during winter visits. When we first started visiting Cape May many years ago we tried a few other places to stay, but once we found the John Wesley Inn it has been the only place we will stay. Bonnie’s hospitality, the beautiful home, the incredible breakfasts and the location make the John Wesley your best choice!

Debbie and I stayed at the apartment "B" over the labor day weekend at it was fantastic... I would recommend you use their parking because almost everything is within walking distance of the Inn , we basically parked our car and didn't need it until we left. Our hosts made us very comfortable even with the COVID Pandemic going on. We stayed at the Apartment "B", which was just fantastic... not only was the bed very comfortable but we were both pleasantly surprised how quiet things were. The apartment was very clean and with the AC it made it quite comfortable in the evenings. I can't say enough about our host ether, they are both fantastic and gracious people. They both made us feel very relaxed and even though we were late getting back from breakfast the day of checking out they understood.... When we come back to Cape May we are planning to stay at the B & B just so we can try their breakfast. I would highly recommend staying at the John Wesley Inn

We recently stayed within the B&B's apartment property adjacent to their main house, and it was the perfect retreat. Extremely clean and well equipped, was a great find (on Airbnb!). You truly can't beat this location, and the hospitality you will receive from both Bonnie and Lance even though we were not true B&B guests staying in the home. Walking distance from the best restaurants, we will certainly be back!

We stayed in Apt B for 2 nights. It was very spacious and very comfortable. The apartment was spotless and is clearly well maintained. There are two sleeping areas with very comfortable bedding and both the downstairs and upstairs feature ceiling fans in addition to a guest controlled A/C thermostat.
The only part of the lodging that was a little disappointing was the shower stall. I know that some renovations have been done in this unit and perhaps replacement of that shower stall is next on the list.
The location of this apartment is wonderful. It is a short walk to the beach and the street is very quiet . Made for great sleeping at night!! There is an adjacent unit but we never heard a sound from next door.
All in all very pleased with our stay and would recommend to friends.

Our family chose The John Wesley Inn as the perfect venue to spend our Thanksgiving holiday. Our carriage house was ornately decorated in warm Victorian style ambience, fully stocked kitchen utensils, and close proximity to market area restaurants and shopping. The beach was one block from the inn, and the colors in the morning sunrises were amazing. One thing that impressed me was the pristine rooms, upgraded renovations, and our friendly innkeepers Bonnie and Lance. Our nights were spectacular, with all the homes decorated for Christmas, horse-drawn carriages clopping down the street, and shared with other families in this historic town of magic and charm. We were greatly inspired, and highly recommend The John Wesley Inn on your next stay in Cape May.

My husband and 2 young children just stayed in Apartment A this past weekend and we had an absolutely amazing experience! From the moment we booked our reservation, Bonnie was communicative, accessible and gave us all the information we needed in advance to plan our trip. Upon arrival, Bonnie and Lance were warm, welcoming and available in case we needed anything. The apartment is the perfect combination of historical charm with updated amenities. The apartment was clean, bright and spacious. You simply cannot beat the location! Just one block from the beach and a very short walk into downtown. We will definitely be staying again! Thank you Bonnie and Lance!

My husband and I have stayed at B&B's around the world- from the most basic to the most exquisite- We have enjoyed each experience -- When I read the reviews on Trip Advisor for this Inn- I thought it would be perfect..., NOT SO-- price is not in line with experience. On the positive side, it's immaculate & the furnishings are very pretty, it it 1/2 block to the beach and there is off street parking. All of which was represented accurately on their website. When I called to book the reservation I spoke with Bonnie who seemed rushed and harried- I figured it was due to my mid afternoon call (changeover.., ) and didn't think much of it. When we arrived - we were greeted by a harried Bonnie who immediately instruced us of the "rules" - including the instructions for the combo lock on the front door "our only line of defense"- where I was chastised for not immediately doing the combo/lock turn on the first go-round..., our welcome was neither warm nor pleasant. We were divested of our payment, told to move our car to the appointed "between the lines" location and curtly shown our room (and if we insisted a walk to the third floor where ice is available (don't fill your cooler-- pardon me, but we didn't bring one, nor would we imagine we were at a Super 8 -to be told this was insulting) In tow addtional "rules" were laid out. In spite of this not so "charming" welcome-- this was a much needed break for us- we had to ask for the beach chairs, and were given towels after seeking them out (empty bin) for our trip to the beach-- and this only after a quick knock on the previously pointed out "PRIVATE AREA, WE DO LIVE HERE AND THAT IS PRIVATE" area of the home-- We were asked if we were early risers (we're not) and told that we would be expected for breakfast at 8:59 (breakfast is at 9AM sharp)-- I appeared in the dining room with my husband at 8:55 (didn't want to be late) to find coffee -- no fruit, no granola, nothing but a set table (which had been set the previous day) no other guests in sight and no innkeeper-- my husband, myself and another couple who wandered in about that time made cups of coffee and retired to the front porch for a few moments. Our innkeeper Bonnie at around 9:15 (the place isn't that big and we were not exactly MIA--) popped her head out with NOT a "good morning" but a rather obnoxious "BREAKFAST WAS AT NINE.., I SUPPOSE NO ONE OUT HERE IS HUNGRY THIS MORNING..., " This is not a quaint, cute or charming introduction to the day. Breakfast consisted of a "single homemade waffle w/ berry compote and homemade whip cream" + a small single glass of OJ w/ ice. While I can say my room was clean and the inn spotless-- I did not feel warm or welcomed during my stay. I was told one too many times that our stay was "so short" (the Inn prefers a 2 night minimum). On a short side note, this is not an inexpensive B&B- I intentionally choose a lovely room w/ a private balcony--- price was not an object for this stay. The kleenex is from Acme, the toilet paper you can see through-- and what must have been formerlly filled but still being filled with a fancy "French Label" handsoap (large size) on the side of the sink was filled with unmistakable (but unconfirmed) ORANGE anti-bacterial DIAL soap. An inn that charges $300 + per night and touts a "special experience " should provide one. Despite the previous reviews, I would urge you to re-consider a booking at this Inn. I've relied on many Trip Advisor reviews- generally they are accurate or you can "read between the lines" to see if you can live with the individual odd bits of any individual place.., The previous reveiws of this Inn do not reflect the experience of this B & B.

Response from JWICapeMay, Owner at John Wesley Inn
Responded Sep 10, 2007
We at the John Wesley Inn welcome constructive criticism and will review these comments, as we have those from our thousands of other guests in our quest for continuous improvement. For the record we have called this guest to discuss their experience, leaving a message on their voice mail. We welcome a call back. When dealing with groups of people, as we do every day, rules must be established to insure the well being and enjoyment of all. That is why we have an “orientation” at check-in to explain things like parking, beach items, breakfast and the dozens of other amenities we provide our guests. For this person to state that all previous reviews do not reflect the experience of this B&B is an insult to the integrity of our other guests and your members who have taken the time to share their experiences with other readers. Rather than refute each concern, which could easily be done, I would encourage your readers to not “read between the lines,” as suggested, but, rather read each review and decide for themselves if the dozens of postings reflect the true experiences of others at the John Wesley Inn or if they are all mistaken and this one right. Want to find out what the truth is… come see us and decide for yourself!

My husband and I visited Cape May, NJ for the first time in early October. We had a wonderful time and would like to thank Bonnie and Lance Pontin of the John Wesley Inn for helping to make our stay so special. We have had the opportunity to stay at many B&B's along the east coast, and this one ranked as one of our favorites. It's location is fantastic - just a short walk to the beach. The house is beautifully decorated, not to mention . . . spotless! We had a delicious breakfast and were pleasantly surprised when Bonnie and Lance joined us after completing their duties in the kitchen. It was lovely to hear about how they became "innkeepers," as well as share our own experiences with them. We highly recommend this B&B.

My husband posted a review of this inn back in September of 2006, detailing our mini-honeymoon stay there right after our wedding in August 2006. His review is absolutely glowing, and there is not a single negative remark. However, there is a rather sinister reason for this, and I suspect it is the same reason why all of the other reviews have been so incredibly positive up until now (thanks to a recent reviewer for breaking the cycle!). You see, the initial review that mya husband posted was extremely positive, but there were a few truthful remarks regarding the female innkeeper's behavior/attitude that were somewhat negative. Literally the same day that the original TripAdvisor review was published, we began receiving phone calls from the female innkeeper (I do not want to mention her husband here, as he was nothing but extraordinarily nice and hospitable during our stay).
My husband initially tried to respond to the female innkeeper's phone messages via e-mail, but she refused to communicate in that less confrontational modality, and, instead, continued to call nd leave messages (both on our home phone and on my husband's cell phone). We did not want to get involved in a confrontation over the phone, but my husband finally answered one of her incessant phone calls so as to hopefully put the issue at rest. As we suspected, the phone calls were a result of a few remarks that my husband had made in his TripAdvisor review (most of which had actually been my input, as I was the one who had experienced more of the female innkeeper's unpleasantness), despite the fact that the comments were quite minor and did not affect the overall rating of the inn (which was 5 out of 5). The female innkeeper requested that we remove these comments entirely from our review. We felt that this was a very backhanded and unethical way for the business owner to respond to such an overwhelmingly positive review, especially when TripAdvisor provides the "management response" feature, thereby allowing business owners/managers to respond to user reviews. However, we did not want to have to continue to deal with the female innkeeper in such a way and sour our memories of what was, by and large, a lovely post-wedding trip, so my husband removed the comments regarding the female innkeeper's behavior from the review and re-posted it on TripAdvisor.
Now, a year later, we were very interested (and also glad) to see a review exposing the behavior of the female innkeeper. We also wanted to let that reviewer know that she and her husband most certainly were not the only ones who received such treatment. This is something that TripAdvisor users should know about and consider prior to selecting the John Wesley Inn. Cape May is a wonderful place with tons of lovely bed and breakfasts. The John Wesley Inn is extremely expensive and does not truly deliver what should be expected from an inn charging such an exorbitant rate. I suggest that TripAdvisor users check out some of the other fantastic inns that Cape May has to offer---there are certainly many others that are very highly rated. No one wants to have to deal with the kind of attitude and snobbishness exhibited by the female proprietor of the John Wesley Inn when they are on vacation!

Worst experience I ever had....
We stayed in the Stockton room with the porch which is the best room at the B&B. The air conditioner located right next to the bed, and it is old and loud. I could not fall asleep. the porch was not clean, maybe ever, and during our stay the cleaning lady didn’t go out there. The floor on the porch was all sandy and dusty, I had to turn patio pillow over, cause the up side was sticky and sandy…small bathroom, no shower gel, the wall in front of the sink could be more clean also, the tooth paste bubbles looked disgusting on it…for the breakfast we had weird combination of some kind of the tasteless waffle with whipped cream and bacon …with no offer any other choice. We end up eating breakfast in the bagel place half a block up, where the bagels were nice and tasty.…
Long process checking in.
The place is expensive and totally not worth it.
We end up leaving a night earlier. The owner makes you pay for your stay upfront, so we
were out the money.
Call me snobbish or impolite, but I did not get the “charm” nor did I find the place appealing.
It is old and grim, rundown and dirty, the only positive thing is that the location is amazing. You are a half a block from the ocean and close to everything.
Maybe B&B is not my cup of tea!
But who enjoys sleeping in the very old and squeaky bed, with old sheets and loud air condition!

On a business note, our mission at the John Wesley Inn has always been one of continuous improvement. To that end we review and consider all input and feedback. We use this information as a learning experience and correct those things that are physically within our power. We at the JWI put our reputation on the line every day, with every guest. We feel that if a guest is truly unhappy with something about the Inn, that they should bring it to our attention immediately and allow us an opportunity to correct it before using the internet as a loudspeaker. We believe that TripAdvisor users are very savvy travelers and will be able to decide for themselves if the above review is “one off” of the “real deal.” On a personal note, my wife is saddened to learn that after having had several one–on-one conversations with this man and his new wife, revealing topics in common that he would then write such terrible things. She has tried several times to call them to discuss this.
