IMHO this place is NOT a bargain. They charge what they charge because they can't get more for it, nor should they. I'm not a big fan of B&Bs in general, especially this place. They didn't provide a warm welcome, nor was there any breakfast furnished. On the 2 mornings I came down at 8:30, there was no food, no coffee or anything. The building was hot and sticky as the blazes. It's the dog days of summer. The rooms have tiny window air conditioners, and the bathroom windows are kept open all the time and the AC doesn't do anything for it. Heavy linens and a wool blanket on the beds in this heat? It took the window AC all night long to finally get the room down to something reasonable. Parking was another issue. NO PARKING for our room on the premise. We were faced with 2 choices; 1) park on the street for $1.00 an hour ($10 a day) with a 3-hour maximum, or down the street with a 10-hour maximum, or 2) use their parking pass to park for free in a municipal lot 1/2 mile away with a 10-minute walk in each direction. The property is not well maintained and has that 100-year-old granny smell. The railing and balustrades into the main door from the street level have been damaged and aren't sturdy. The furnishings are rusted, these aren't the antiques! You have to hold 2 remote controls for the TV: 1 to turn it on/off and adjust the volume; the other to change channels. This place is NOT RECOMMENDED!

As the owner of Kings cottage I take pride in receiving and welcoming my guests but the reviewer is correct that I was not able to give them a warm welcome because they did not call or let me know they were arriving late and after waiting several hours I called them and they were still in their car on the way to Cape May I had dinner plans that evening and told them I would leave instructions for their check-in ~ they also on that phone call did not tell me they had made plans for the next morning for an early tour so when they came looking for breakfast I had just arrived to start to put the breakfast out for our 9 AM serving also at that 8 AM time they did not inform me they made the same early plans for the next morning and again came looking for breakfast before 8 AM - I had just baked some muffins which I gave to them to take for their early tour - All guests at Kings Cottage who have been coming for years - some 17 or 18 years will confirm that there is always coffee and tea plus drinking water and ice and juice available - this couple decided to choose one of our less expensive rooms which they were told did not have on site parking since we have a small parking lot and can only fit 5 of our rooms with parking - the other four rooms receive a permit to a lot a few blocks from the Inn ~ All rooms have A/C and ceiling fans and the room they had is a smaller room and gets cool very fast and none of our rooms have blankets on the beds in the hot summer time - we do keep blankets in closets or dresser drawers if there should be a cool evening and our guests would need a blanket ~ the TV has two remotes because it is a newer TV that requires one remote to control the channel box ~ many newer TV's work that way ~ sadly these guests must have arrived right after one of our guests hit the bottom step of our entrance with a very large SUV - we have a narrow drive way and guests are sent confirmation letters that large SUV'S or Trucks cannot fit into the parking area I am very sorry that this couple did not enjoy their stay at Kings Cottage - we are a historic Inn built 1878 with beautiful furnishings from the Victorian age with a wonderful location near the beach and town and I wish they were able to have also enjoyed that part of staying with us at Kings Cottage but I did note that the reviewer did mention he was not a fan of B &B'S so for the future they may wish to stay in one of several of our beautiful and more modern hotels in Cape May and I wish you much happiness if and when you return for another stay in Cape May Barbara Preminger ~ Owner-Innkeeper - Kings Cottage

My wife and I love Cape May, N.J. One of our favorite places to stay. King's Cottage was a very nice place to stay and right within walking distance of many stores and the beach. The owner is always on staff, and a very nice lady at that. The breakfast was modest, but very enjoyable. The rooms were of adequate size, and the bed was very comfortable. Nice place to stay in.

Thank you David for your review and your kind words I do love what I do so it is always a joy to welcome you and your wife to Kings Cottage Yes we do have such a great location next to the ocean and beach with a beautiful promenade to walk and see the sunset in the evening and then just a block away to have an after dinner ice cream cone on the Washington Street Mall Cape May is quiet now but it is our hope that the fun will begin within the next month or so and it is my hope to see you both once again this season 2020 Barbara Preminger ~ Owner-Innkeeper - Kings Cottage

My husband surprised me with a getaway weekend for my birthday. The B&B is one block away from the ocean which is super convenient and I was happy to find that the room was very clean. They offer beach chairs and towels however we chose to use our own. They advertise a continental breakfast each morning, which they provided but we elected to go across the street to Uncle Bill's. The room could use some updating, especially the electrical system. Half our room lost power, luckily we were about to juggle around extension cords to get the AC unit back on. The entire house could use AC, tough to eat breakfast in the heat downstairs. Although the room was a bit outdated, with a 13" CRT TV, it was clean, the bed comfortable and served its purpose.

Thank you for your review ~ We are always working on things here at Kings Cottage and since your visit we have asked our electrician to look into the electric circuit breakers and have had them repaired ~ I always keep in mind that this is a 1878 Building and sometimes things are not as easy as they should be I had hoped to have some new TV'S this season and then we had to close due to the virus but we are looking forward to opening at the end of this month or next and maybe new TV'S will be in the near future I am very proud of our housekeeping staff as we know this is a very important part of staying at a B&B and they love what they do and are always happy to hear that our guests gave a good report Again thank you for your stay and we hope you will think of us for a future time Barbara Preminger ~ Owner-Innkeeper - Kings Cottage

The King’s Cottage is a great location just steps from the beach and rooms with a balcony like room #2 have a fantastic view. The amenities leave much to be desired and the inn is a bit in need of sprucing up to be able to compete with some of the other B&B’s in Cape May. The breakfast is a nice continental breakfast with homemade fresh muffins. The towels and linens are on the lower scale and not as nice as I would have expected for the price. There were no toiletries in the bathroom so make sure you bring your own mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. This is something that they should provide when spending over $250/night. The TV in the room is a very old 17” box tv, likely won’t matter unless you plan to watch TV at night or in the morning while getting ready - this is the beach after all and TV is likely not a priority. The parking is provided onsite for free which is convenient and I would suggest making sure you back into the space since the lot is tight and small. Bottom line is you have to decide what matters more for your stay: a view or nice linens, decor, and amenities. For this trip we picked view and location, but next time we will try to find something with both.

My wife and I stayed here in June and I had read a few bad reviews but a few more good ones so we took our chances. Barbara was fantastic , she helped us plan before and during our trip and was very accommodating . Kings cottage is not a 5 star B n B but it is very clean and quaint. We loved mrs. Barbara . Bfast is light but there are plenty options close by. Would definitely stay here again.
