The Marquis De Lafayette Hotel emerges as a favored destination for its inviting atmosphere and modern decor, as highlighted by guests. Its prime location near the beach and local attractions is a major draw, although the buzz of activity can sometimes be a downside. The rooms receive compliments for their cleanliness and ocean views, notwithstanding a few mentions of size and occasional pet odors.
Visitors often applaud the friendly and efficient service, as well as the variety of amenities. While some guests believe the pricing aligns with the value, others view it as steep.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed at the Marquis for a week , beginning August 20. The outstanding features of the hotel are: the always helpful, courteous staff, location across from the beach, the proximity to many fine restaurants and the shops at the Washington Street Mall. The view of the ocean from the 6th floor balcony is beautiful. Our spacious two room suite included a two burner stove, refrigerator and microwave. The Barefoot Bar by the pool is an added bonus. We were again happy to see Joe Morano, Manage,r and Marlene at the front desk. Both add to the warmth and genuine(ness) of the hotel. Kudos also to Bartending staff, including creative mixologists Pat and Mark, Joe G in maintenance, Crystal in housekeeping (our room was spotless). Cape May is our 'happy place' and the Marquis is the center of it all. We enjoyed the 'early bird specials' at the the Merion Inn, the Iccara and the Backstreet Cafe for dinner. All very reasonable and delicious. The Marquis also offered beach tags for guests. The Marquis is a great place for all, including couples, groups and families.

My family spent 4 days in Cape May for the Labor Day Holiday weekend. We were in a 3rd floor room of the hotel. This was our first true stay/experience at the Marquis. The room was bright, comfortable, and stylish, with wonderful views of the beach and ocean. The hotel blends the charming grandeur of the Victorian era with the modernity of a 21st century hotel. Accommodating/professional staff with exceptionally clean facilities, a decent sized pool and a hot tub. The Barefoot Bar was open too with a happy hour and live entertainment. Constructive criticism would be...the rear walkways and staircase in "north building" where the dog-friendly suites are on the 1st floor. These areas are frequently used by guests as well as staff. The walkway could be cleaner, and repainted. The staircase on the 1st floor should be scrubbed and cleaned of garbage/debris, and the staircase should be repainted (light grey or white)....would really improve the character of the hotel with these simple, cheap upgrades. We are looking forward to returning to Cape May and the Marquis next Summer!

(I'm Back!)
After successful covid vaccinations, my wife and I planned a getaway to Cape May, NJ this month for her birthday. She had been to the area in her teen years, but this was a first time destination for myself. After some research of the smaller boutique options, we decided on Congress Hall which was where some friends from NYC were staying while we were there. A few days later, I changed our reservation to the Marquis de Lafayette hotel which has an amazing penthouse room with a walk out balcony available on the top floor. It was a large room on the southwest facing side of the hotel, overlooking the parking lot but also providing an expansive ocean view. We booked the room for five days/four nights.
We arrived after a 4+ hour drive and had some trouble determining which lot was owned by the hotel. After a phone call, we drove into a lot with no open spots, but ran into James, a hotel employee, who happily guided us to the overflow lot and provided some helpful orientation to the property. Check-in was efficient and frinedly and we were in our 6ht floor room within minutes.
The room is exactly as described on the website; no surprises. I assume it is a room used for families or small family events as the hallway of the 6th floor was set-up as a reception area with chairs and loveseats. It would be easy to see a nice cocktail reception happening in the hallway space. The room was spacious and comfortable, but did have a few little nuances with the patio door lock and the shower control, but nothing entirely negative. The refrigerator is a good size, but there are not many glasses, no plates, and we had to ask for coffee mugs for the kitchen setup.
The only reason I am not rating this property higher is that the hotel was completely unresponsive to our requests for maid service. We arrived on a Saturday and had the "privacy" sticker on the door on Sunday after our first night. On Monday, we went to Atlantic City for most of the day and the room was not cleaned ( we saw the miands on the floor when we left late morning) when we returned. We called that afternoon and was told they would come the next day. The next day, we were out most of the morning and my wife spent the afternoon on the balcony making calls while I was at the beach until mid-afternoon. We saw the maids on our floor and again they never came to our room. When I returned from the beach ( about 3pm), I left a voicemail to complain and requested a call from the manager. As of this writing, that call has not come.
During our stay, there was HVAC maintenance across the hall and heavy painting on the exterior of the floors below. The noise and fumes from this work is more easily forgiven than the complete neglect to cleaning the room and the indifference to providing a response to our inquiries about it. We are not a messy couple, of course, but simply expected some fresh towels and emptying of the trash as a minimum expectation for a room billed as "the penthouse".

Weiting this review while I am unfortunately still staying here. The bad started when I booked a room here for 5 nights through Expedia. Within 6 hours of booking I tried to cancel it. Expedia says I cannot cancel due to hotel policy. I call the hotel and am told it's not them it's Expedia. Expedia calls them 2x and they say they won't refund. Due to this We arrive and cannot check in for 90 min past check in time. Room is not ready but there is a cleaning person cleaning the lobby doors for an hour straight instead of rooms! Finally get up to the room and it has sand all over the floor and chewed gum on the table outside. They come sweep and still sandy. They come vacuum and it's somewhat better but still feel sand all over my feet. The bathroom mirrors don't get wiped, nor does the sink. Covid rules are 2 hours in pool per person once they hit max. capacity, except they don't tell you that at anytime. They ARE sure to tell you there's a $25 fee for missing towels and make you initial a paper agreeing that though. There is ZERO mention about the pool until they start asking people to leave it after 2 hours! The management leaves the staff out to dry and to handle customers. Staff are nice. Power went out in town (not their fault) but pool pump is obviously working. They won't open the pool due to manager won't put the chairs back out! 2 stars at best! Terrible experience all around! I would leave if they'd refund me but they won't or I'd leave and dispute the charges but I don't want to risk losing $2200. Worst lodging experience.

We are very sorry that your stay at our hotel did not meet your expectations. I have addressed the housekeeping issues with our staff to make sure all of our guests experience a clean and sanitized guest room. I'm not sure where the communication broke down with Expedia, but during these uncertain times, we have been very flexible with the cancelation policy. Thank you for noticing our constant attention to our lobby attendant, who's specifically tasked to maintain a sanitized lobby. Maintaining current guidelines at the pool has been challenging at best. We will continue to do our best to accommodate our guests' needs and provide a safe environment and I apologize that we did not communicate this information to you properly. Monday evening we began preparing the hotel for the anticipated arrival of Tropical Storm Isaias and I am aware that this caused inconveniences to our guests. Tuesday morning we did experience the impact of the storm that left the hotel with only partial power for the next 48 hours. This left us with no alternative but to close the hotel. We have made adjustments to your folio and would love the opportunity to speak with you more about this review.

The website indicated that most of the rooms have been updated, so upon check-in, I asked if the Deluxe King Suite I reserved was one of the updated rooms. I was told that those rooms did not need to be updated because they were newer and not in need on renovation. However, my suite was outdated, worn, and dirty. I'm not sure what was "deluxe" about it. The website also indicated that there were strict sanitizing processes in place, but I never once saw anyone cleaning the common areas and the one housekeeper I did see was not wearing a mask.
The one thing I can recommend about this hotel is the location. It's a couple of blocks from the Washington Street Mall and there are plenty of restaurants nearby. The property is ocean front with easy access to the beach.

I am so sorry that you did not have a good experience with us and were misinformed about our refurbished suites. For future reference, the renovated suites are from floors 2 through 5 and we would love to invite you back to experience one of our newly refurbished suites to make up for your disappointing stay. We are also always here 24/7 should you have an issue during your stay. In addition, we have added more staff for the cleaning of the public spaces and have spoken to our room attendant on the 6th floor. We do use all Cintas CDC approved for the cleaning the entire hotel. If you would like to talk with me to further discuss your stay and a future stay with us, please do not hesitate to give me a call. With kind regards, Joe Morano, Rooms Manager

we just returned after 3 days. The views are beautiful but the pool and hot tub were packed with no social distancing and no one regulating anything.
Our room wasn't cleaned by house keeping and we had to request it to be cleaned and even after a request it was a really poor job.
The views and locations are great but may look elsewhere for a little bit cleaner place especially during these times.

The room was in a great location, nothing like walking out and seeing the beach from your balcony first thing in the morning. Staff was also very friendly and bed was comfortable. On the other hand the room itself was so so. Appearance when walking in was nice. But then we noticed the toilet seat always slid side to side when ever you had to sit on it or get up, arm on one chair was completely loose, ready to break, the lock on the sliding door to the balcony didn't work properly. I could not lock it myself, husband had to jimmy it with difficulty to get it to lock. With Covid we chose to wipe down all around our room for our own safty. The tv remotes wiped off completely black on our disinfectant wipes. Gross! Telephone receiver was also dirty but not as bad. We did let the staff member at the desk know these things and he wrote them down to pass along. I guess for the price your paying for is mostly the scenery.

The location and the ocean view from the balcony was great, but there is no housekeeping service unless you requested the rooms need updates and the bathroom was so small also they don’t have that many outlets in the room so we had to charge the phones and other things by the table.
They charge a resort fee when they are an average hotel with very little amenities. The restaurant, pool and bar were not in service during the week, they have no information about the hotel amenities in the room and no safe.
For the price you can get a better service somewhere else even if you have to walk or drive to de restaurants and shopping.

First time staying in Cape May. This is an excellent hotel to stay in. We were in 6th floor suite and the ocean views are incredible. Couldn't ask for a better location for visiting local Washington Street shops and local restaurants. All within easy walking distance. You can literally park your car on arrival and never have to use it till you leave. Room was beautiful and very well laid out. Stove, refrigerator, cabinets, utensils, ceiling fans in bedroom and living area. Absolutely recommend staying and we will be returning to this hotel in any stays in Cape May!!!

The Marquis De Lafayette is located on the beach at Cape May.. It provided easy access to restaurants and nearby shops. There were rockers on our private balcony and we had awesome views of the ocean. The staff was very friendly and parking and beach access was free. Our room was large and had a refrigerator and microwave, but the bed was terrible. The management needs to invest in some better mattresses and spend money on updating the rooms . The overhead, ceiling fan had only one speed-high-so we were unable to use it. We never did figure out how to turn on the wall air conditioner, inconveniently located under a bar table and hard to access unless you were able to lie on the floor. We finally opted to leave the balcony door slightly open one night to get some air in to cool off the room so we could sleep. They also need to do something about the outdoor ramp leading to the rooms. The concrete is uneven and guests risk the chance of falling. I realize this is a beach hotel catering to summer guests, but as well as fixing up the outside (painting and repairs were being made while we were there), they need to pay more attention to making their rooms more comfortable so their guests will want to return.

The hotel does not provide chairs for the beach. You can rent them and an umbrella on the beach by the day or week I believe. We bring our own.

Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey5 contributions9 helpful votesThere are grassed areas off of our parking lots where you can take your pet.
They did not as of this past May, but they were talking about adding that service. We usually just keep our beach chairs in our car trunk in the attached parking lot, right across from the beach. You can call the hotel to see if they have added beach chair service.
No, the closest would be Willow Creek, the only one I know of on Cape May Island. I don't think there are any hotels within walking distance of any of the wineries. But at the Marquis you can take your car anywhere and know you will have a place to park when you come back. If you don't want to drive after drinking, take one of the trolley winery tours. See Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts in Cape May, the tour is called the Wine Trail.
