We always enjoy our pre and post season trips to Cape May. The Victorian Motel offers a clean, comfortable and perfect location next to the Washington St Mall with its many shops and eateries. That being said, the required 3 night stay at $257 per night is too pricey for post season. Another irritant is the rediculous focus on rules, procedures and consequences. One reviewer aptly described it as a prison orientation; my perception is the management must be lawyers or rule obsessed government bureaucrats. Torey presented as an informative desk clerk but clearly was programmed to drill and initial the rules almost like a real estate settlement. On the plus side, The Victorian Motel has been well maintained and updated and its Seniors clientele affords a quiet and age empathetic atmosphere. My two best recommendations for meals are Uncle Bills Pancake House for breakfast (walkable 2 blocks toward the beach) and Sea Salt restaurant fine dining about eight-tenths of a mile away (see separate review).
The pool is always sparkling clean with plenty of comfortable seating.
The beach is a few blocks walk; we opted to drive since we had chairs and we’re getting up there in years.
Our unit had the ac unit in the front seating area; while the air DID reach the bedroom in the back, on a hot night I’d rather have it in the bedroom. Keep that in mind.
Only suggestion for management would be for better curtains or window coverings as the light from outside is bright(they have to leave the lights on outside at night for safety reasons, which is understandable!).
I didn’t mention anything to the staff otherwise I think they would’ve tried to accommodate, but we weren’t bothered too much.
And now for the staff. They were all amazing!!!!!! From check in until the time we left, we were made to feel at home. They were familiar but not intrusive. It was good old genuine hospitality. It’s a great deal for location, service, pool and attention to detail You will not be disappointed.
The motel itself is great (with the exception of the wifi). Nothing fancy but always clean. Great pool and you can’t ask for a more convenient location.
Unfortunately, we have had multiple issues with management regarding our reservations. Without a lengthy recap of all of them, I will share the most recent one. We had 3 rooms booked for this June. We had some changes of plans and only need 2 rooms. We called 2 weeks in advance and asked for the $240 deposit for the 3rd room be moved toward the balance of one of our other rooms. We were told no – because the deadline for making changes was 15 days and it was now 14 days. We didn’t want a refund only to move the money to another room. Yes, that is the policy but certainly there could be some grace for the difference of one day and for a repeat guest of over 15 years. Instead, we lost our $240.
Upon arrival at the Victorian, management has implemented all sorts of new rules. You cannot park your car after 11 am on your check out day. In fact, you can no longer use the pool after 11 am on your check out day.
To use the pool at all, you need to have a pool pass. Each person has their own pool pass and there is a guy that sits at the gate all day. You must give him your pass when you enter and pick it up from him when you leave. So every time – if you leave to get something from your room, or to use the restroom, or to go get lunch – you have to swap the pass back and forth. I understand the end goal is to prevent non guests from using the pool, but there has to be an easier way. And don’t lose your pass, because that is a $20 fee.
Then there was housekeeping… or really there wasn’t housekeeping. We received a full instruction sheet about how we needed to bag our wet towels and our garage and put it outside our room and we would get a bag with fresh towels. If we wanted someone to clean the room, we could not be in the room and the same time, and they would only clean surface areas.
I will touch on one more element, which to be fair, has always been an issue there – the wifi. It is awful. If you are lucky enough to pick up their wifi signal at all, it goes in and out and the strength is week. It was actually mentioned in our instruction sheet to not try to stream anything because it affects the signal for all the guests. So obviously, they know it’s a problem.
We have enjoyed the Victorian for so many years, but it is time to explore other Cape May options unless the issues here are resolved.
